This developer stated that while it was quite easy for a PlayStation 4 game to run at 1080p in 30fps, the same game would need to run at 1600×900 (or 900p) on the Xbox One and at only about 20fps. That article sent fanboys on both sides of the console war into a frenzy, and it sparked concern that maybe Microsoft would use its money and power to pressure developers to downgrade their PlayStation 4 versions to match the weaker Xbox One.
Recently it was revealed that the high-profile Xbox One launch title Ryse is only running in 900p, which is sub-HD as far as these next-gen consoles go, and that gave the Edge article even more credibility. Today word from a European magazine reveals something scary may be happening with the new generation of gaming, and if you’re planning on buying a PlayStation 4 it should piss you off.
A poster at NeoGAF has discovered an article on French gaming site Gamingblog that puts forth something many people have feared.
The article says that a French developer (obviously Ubi-Soft) has downgraded the PS4 version of their big next-gen launch title (Watch_Dogs) due to a “political issue” as to not offend Microsoft, the manufacturer of the Xbox One. It also says a big US publisher is doing the same thing, and it’s speculated that the publisher that isn’t named is either EA or Activison.
This means that since the Xbox One can’t match the performance of the PlayStation 4, developers are purposely making the PS4 version of the game look worse just so Microsoft won’t complain to them that the Xbox One version is at a disadvantage technically. Microsoft cut corners on the Xbox One hardware in favor of stupid TV crap no one cares about, and as a result they have to pressure developers to bring their multi-platform games down to a lower graphical level just so people won’t see how much worse the $500 Xbox One is compared to their competitor that’s $100 less.
This is why I will not be buying an Xbox One.
