    Pitch Edits 2015 Discussion Thread

Hey all, now that most (if not all) of us have the game and have messed around with it a bit, I thought now would be a good time to get a discussion going about this year's pitch edits, the new dynamic break mechanic, and various other things.

Let me start off with a couple of things:

    - The regular 4 seam fastball has some arm side movement now, although it doesn't seem like much. I have yet to test if the movement slider has an effect on axis movement or "explosiveness" (rise, action, etc. whatever you want to call it).

    - The running fastball breaks more like a 2-Seam now, there is a good amount of z movement.

    - It seems like the running fastball's max velocity was nerfed, all imported players with it have significantly lower velocites (~3 mph).

    - The displayed velocities for created players are glitched, I filed a bug report yesterday.

Feel free to discuss anything related to pitch edits. Once I am done with the M's OSFM I'll be working on updating my spreadsheet to end of 2014 numbers. Expect 99% of running fastballs to be replaced by the regular 4 seam.

Yeah I noticed this yesterday (the bug). Very annoying. Looks like I'll need to be tweaking my formula this year, 4 seamers to move a a bit this year. Still not much though.

Not so much a pitch edit but a pitch speed edit. It is 3yrs running now that Aroldis Chapman can only hit 102mph. And that is only if you edit his pitch speed to max. 99 overall. When there are nights when he doesn't throw his 4seam slower than 102. I know someone is gonna tell me avg season speed. I don't think he should throw 105mph every pitch but should be able to hit it once in a while or at least close to it. Not a huge deal but it's the little things that make this game realistic and they continue to miss on a lot of little things.

Chapman hasn't hit 105 since his rookie year according to PitchFX but agreed they do need to bump up the max a little.

The 4 seam movement is so slight, its almost not noticeable. I'm going to check out different arm angles to see if it makes a difference. So far I've checked David Price and some of the M's prospects with low arm angles, might just stick with running fastballs for those guys.

          Edit:

It is a little more noticeable for side arm deliveries and extremely high movement. Velocity might be a factor as well.

Agreed. But if 105 has been done it should be possible.

He's starting, right? What's his velocity like this spring? if its low to mid instead of mid to high, I'll switch from a 2 seam.

                    Edit:

Forgot he started some games last year. Looks like sinkers can be a few ticks above 95 this year, I'll switch over to a sinker then.

What do you guys think about the change-up velocities this year? I have noticed a lot of guys in the game have like a 15mph difference between their fastball and change-ups? But when I look up their pitch velocities on fangraphs the real world split is normally between 5-6 mph. Check out Tyler Matzek on the Rockies for example.

Might just be a mistake for Matzek, I don't think its a coincidence that his changeup velocity according to gameday was 87 mph

I will say that Felix's changeup velocity is off though, but it always is.

Brooks has Appel throwing a sinker at 94.94 mph. Do I go with the actual sinker or is the movement more 2-seam?

Sean, how do you feel about the changeups? I've noticed straight changes have alot more fade this year, especially from guys with low arm angles, similar to the 4-seamers. I've always felt like the circle changes don't dive enough for guys with knock out changeups (think Chris Sale, who in real life throws a straight change but because of arm angle he gets a ton of armside movement but it also dives big time). Will you be changing alot of circle changes to straight changes this year? I'm not quite sure how to tell which is which using just pitchfx data though as the movement of the two can be very much the same in real life.

2-seam, plenty of run and not much sink actually.
