NBA 2k16 MyLeague: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

What’s up guys. Most of you know me from the draft classes and the fictional league me and the other SimWorld crew put together but I also try to make one of these threads for 2k every year the game is released. We know that MyLeague is a mode that the casual fan has little interest in, but those of us that do play it are pretty obsessive about it. So once again, I decided to spend more first night with the game analyzing the mode and sharing my findings with all of you.

Statistics
Here’s an area that many people have been frustrated with for years. In my opinion, the two biggest areas over the past few years have been rebounds and blocks. More recently, rebounding stats have seen an improvement but blocks have continued to be a statistic that has not mimicked what we generally see in real life. Let’s take a look at the major statistical categories after year 1 and after year 5.

Hmmmm, so this isn’t bad at all. For those of us that wondered if they would fix the blocks stats, the simple answer is yes. It also looks as if they decreased the steals as well since last year I’ve seen players average as much as 3.3 steals a year. One of the issues I had last year still appears to be present however. The generated rookies are often given above average scoring ratings but below average tendencies which leads to the generated players not scoring a high amount of points. The highest that I saw out of four computer generated drafts was 18.1 points. I suppose that’s not too terrible but you would think that in four years at least one of those players would score 20 or more right? Well, that’s why people like me make draft classes. Overall, I am pretty impressed with the changes that they made to the statistics.

I’ve never had a huge problem with the way that awards played out but I know a lot of people are always interested to see what the game predicts. Once again, let’s look at the awards and some of the standings following year 1 and year 5.

Most of you that read the MyLeague blog know that they improved the lottery. Overall, it is definitely a visual improvement and I like the reporter coming in with extra news about the teams but nothing worth spending a ton of time talking about.



Mock Draft
Ya know, I probably should have talked about this earlier since the mock draft was available during the season but better late than never. I read somewhere that the game makes it possible for draft busts and gems. My assumption was that the game would move away from previous years where you could pretty much get away with drafting solely based off where players where ranked on the Big Board. In an effort to test this, I quickly edited a draft class to make these players:

Interesting to see how the draft went. I have a lot of thoughts about this but it’s so late so I will let you guys discuss until I get off of work in the morning. Anything stand out to you?



How does Peak Start and Peak End Work
So as most of you know 2K has implemented the option to determine when a player peaks and when he starts to decline. I decided to take four of the players above and follow them throughout a portion of their careers to see how they progress with all of the sliders set at 50.

So maybe this is what they meant with they said you can draft a bust or a gem. Things started getting weird when I noticed that Player I was progressing way past that 80 potential. When I went to check his potential rating three years later I noticed that it was 87. Interesting right? So then I go to Player L who was supposed to be the best of all of these guys and his potential rating dropped to an 82. Has anything changed in the first three years? Yes…. apparently Player L had an injury that caused him to miss 72 games. The next year, Player L got a back injury and his potential rating dropped to a 77. Player B had no injuries but his potential rating was one point less (76) than what I initially set it at. Player G’s potential was two points less (72). So what does this mean? Well, apparently injuries do affect potential which is pretty damn cool. It also appears that the CPU slightly alters potential ratings this time around. I’ll have to do more test in the near future to see what’s up.

Oh, I almost forgot to address what I intended to study during this section. Peak start and peak end appear to be working as intended. Without taking training into consideration, it looks as if your player will reach his potential at the peak start age and start to decline at the peak end age as we saw with player G. I’ll test more over the weekend.



Free Agency/CPU Roster Logic
One of the biggest issues with most franchise modes in sports games has got to be how teams go about signing players in free agency. So many things can go wrong from stars being left in free agency when the season begins to the Wizards signing Steph Curry. Instead of going year by year I decided to wait until after year 5 and see if anything stands out. Notes can be found below.

- In 2020, the Sixers still have Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens and Embiid. Their ratings are 88, 82 and 81 respectively.
- PG Player J (who is an 83 overall now) has not been getting many minutes at all due to the fact that Isaiah Thomas is starting for the Celtics (also an 83 overall) and eating up all the minutes at the position. Player J is only getting a little over 20 minutes.
- Chris Paul still an 89 overall at 35 years old.
- The Jazz drafted a small forward named Marshall Holmes with the 2^nd pick in 2018 even though they still have Gordon Hayward. The two share the same position and are both an 84 overall and the best players on the team.
- Dennis Schroder (81 overall) signed with the Kings the previous year even with Darren Collison who is an 80 starting at the position. Collison’s minutes went from 32.3 to 25.9 a game. Schroder played 26.6 minutes a game.
- The Brooklyn Nets have three point guards on their team that are the second, third and fourth best players on the team. Ricky Rubio (81 overall), Pandazis Dourekas (81 overall) and Zach Lavine (80 overall)

Other than that nothing much stood out other than the fact that their hasn’t been much player movement with the big name players with the sliders at 50. John Wall still with the Wizards, Steph and Klay is still with the Warriors, Chris Paul, Blake and Deandre still with the Clippers, Russ and KD with the Thunder, Lebron with the Cavs, Gasol with the Grizzlies, Cousins with the Kings, Davis with the Pelicans. The only big name players I saw on different teams was Kevin Love with the Magic and Carmelo Anthony with the Brooklyn Nets. If you like more big name player movement you are going to have to play with some sliders.

NBA 2k16 MyLeague: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Thanks for this, I'll provide so,e feedback myself later in regards to tendencies of drafted players and player progression.

Knew not to trust their "team building 'logic'", however I'd be lying to you if I told you that I had any intent on allowing the CPU to control free agency or the draft, in any aspect, this year.

Awesome job on the simming, great info. I'm still in the process of doing mine (I fell asleep 20 minutes after the release and snoozed till 6am ... that's what I get for staying up the night before and building my new gaming PC). But, after waking up this morning, I jumped into 2K16's MyLeague with reckless abandon.

Two hours later and I have some answers.

Relocation:

Is instant in MyLeague -- unlike the real NBA where you basically have to give 8-10 months notice, in MyLeague as soon as you choose to relocate it's approved. No waiting a year, no fan riots, no empty arenas, just a straight relocation.

Team logos must be a 1 to 1 ratio (meaning the height and width much match) and the game doesn't recognize white space as nothing, so if you have a logo saved on a white background it will import that background with the logo, making it a logo on a white block.

The arena designing is pretty cool -- different arena types have different crowd capacities, some on the small side (16k) and some larger (21k). Arena can be decked out in team colors or other colors or no colors. Floor types are rather limited -- about five I think, but the honeycomb floor is there (for you Hornets fans).

Arena sounds are preloaded with the basics -- the coin sound, the cash register, some team specific sounds (like the bear growl or hawk screech). There is no option to play a sound for a Home Fast Break, which I found odd (the Pacers do that, don't they?) but you can do the long siren for threes (one of my favorite effects). It's not an exciting collection, but its workable in limited quantities.

Rebranding:

1. No custom alternate uniforms, you can only do home and away.

2. The team's previous alternates ARE still there, however -- you can change your team to the Sonics and still have them wear their previous alternates (not their previous home and aways, though).

3. You can rebrand as many times as you'd like (I haven't hit a limit if there is one) but the home and away jerseys from the previous iterations don't become alternates; they get wiped for the new home and aways. So, they'll be retired and never seen again unless you decide to make them your home and away again.

4. You can have a max of 10 images from you uploads on your jersey.

All that said, the jersey design is pretty deep and the combinations are numerous. This might become one of the most time-consuming and enjoyable features of this MyLeague for the community with the various combinations.

2K has done very, very well this year.

I asked this in the 2k16 impressions but I don't think it was addressed because everyone is so engaged with their games. But is there a create-a-team feature outside of myleague/mygm?

The uniform designer is absolutely nuts, the only negatives I've found so far are you can only have 50 images uploaded (and am yet to work out how to delete uploaded files) and we don't appear to be able to save the uniforms at all. Am not a fan of the draft but everything else so far seems pure gold.

I also did a lil dry run with myleague and did 30 team control. 2k really out done themselves this time. You can pretty much have auto for everything in regard to your myleague. Basically you can have the CPU control everything but you manage the minutes. This will eliminate players not getting minutes that should be. Also the cool thing is that I put Auto for player trades and player block and the CPU will do trades with each other, even though I control them. I did not see a trading block though.

Did a one team myleague and you cannot sign out of one team and use another. Which is okay since you have the option for the CPU to automize everything. Now I did not get to the off season but even if the CPU does something bogus you can fix it.

This is the first year I think, we can do 30 team control but feel like we're going up against the CPU.

I asked this in the 2k16 impressions but I don't think it was addressed because everyone is so engaged with their games. But is there a create-a-team feature outside of myleague/mygm?

my package is out for delivery so maybe ill get it 12pm EST but i would like to know, if that's okay.

I didn't find one; the CAP I did find (no tattoo in there from what I could find). It might be under one of the roster editor options, but I didn't see it.

thanks for the heads up. I think you maybe on the right track anyway, doesn't appear to have a create-a-team feature. I'm thinking if it was included it should pretty easy to find and maybe next to create-a-player. that's too bad. Still going to have a hell of a lot of fun with this game when it comes through the mail today and the rest of the year though.

The content is deep this year. It seems every mode got a lot of attention. I don't honestly see a reason for me to get 2K17 based on how much is in this one; I'm going to attempt to go the full 80 years in MyLeague.

Well, you make your own decision on this one but I think there need to be some edits to “peak end” for a lot of these guys. I feel like a lot of them are just too old to be at the top of the league like that. Of course, there is plenty of time for that. I’d be interested to hear your guys thoughts on this.

This is what jumped out to me, and it was in last year's game, too. "Real life" players held their value at very high ratings long into any MyLeague game save, and draft class players as a group did not ever reach the same levels of rating, on a year by year basis, the way the legacy real players did. It distorted the league to make it as if current generation players were the all time greats, and later, the golden age of NBA basketball.

I was hoping they would have balanced this out this year, but maybe not. I'll have to look further, but if this is miscalibrated, that's too bad. Sliders would help I guess for draft class generation.

I'll be curious to see if generated classes will be usable, maybe with sliders, this year or if I need to make custom ones for every year again.

Sapp, how are the tendencies for auto generated rookies, and how to they match with attributes? If gameplay has been normalized around current gen players, I hope generated rookies fit within that framework for ongoing franchise mode gameplay.

Great post. One thing really annoying about generated rookies is that they all have the same base jumper coming in to the league.

Pretty Dope. Actually enjoy the way the potential system seems to be working aside from the peak end needing to be earlier. But like how season injury lowered potential.

Do you think there's anything that can be done about the high assist numbers with guys like wade and durant averaging over 8 a game? How are the assist numbers for bigs?

Is it still impossible to sign players to 10 days contracts? I remember last year you could only sign guys rated really low.
