    TULANE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM

From: D. Geezy, Head Football Coach
    To: Rick Dickson, Athletic Director
    Re: Commitments/Upcoming Visits
    Date: Monday, November 15, 2010

    Rick -

We did not sign any players this week however I just wanted to update you on our progress.

The bad news is that two of our top targets, QB Curtis Byrd and ATH/QB Derrick Mitchell soft committed this week to Colorado and Houston, respectively. The good news is that I think we still have a good shot at both of them, especially in the case of Mitchell.

At this stage, he is our #1 priority because I think he could be a good, mobile quarterback for our system. I really want this player and it would also be great to steal a player from our conference rival Houston. We will stress to him that with the Cougars, his career as a quarterback would be over but here, we're going to allow him to play the position he is currently playing at his high school.

Something interesting about Mitchell and Byrd is that neither of them has a single scholarship offer on the table from anyone but us, despite their "soft committments."

A couple of others besides Mitchell and Byrd have given soft commits as well unfortunately - ATH Kyle Ramirez and ATH Lawrence Washington both have us second though they have soft committed to Kansas St. and Colorado, respectively. These two may be more difficult to sway than Byrd and Mitchell.

The good news - No player has hard committed to any school since our last update.

More good news - The other big fish we have targeted, ATH Jonathan Lacey, seems to be poised to announce he will sign with us but I suspect he is waiting for Signing Day to make things official. His size and speed combination looks phenomenal.

Yeah that is my hope. His THP and THA ratings look decent (C range) and his speed is a B+. I'm thinking he'll come in rated pretty similarly to Griffin and give him a run for the starting job. Though Griffin has been pretty good as of late, it is difficult using him because he is a statue back there with no ability to escape pressure.

Sadly at this point, I am used to it.

Thanks...I expect to sign some in bunches in the next couple of weeks.

Yeah it has just been one of those years. It is good to know that we're not too far away from being a good team though. I expect to dominate this conference within the next two years.

        32 -- 4-8 (3-5)
        31 -- 7-5 (5-3)

TOP: Tulane redshirt freshman PK Ryan Rome hits a 33-yard game-winning field goal as time expires, giving the Green Wave a 32-31 victory over Marshall. BOTTOM: Wave senior CB Phillip Davis' interception, the first of his career, came with just 1:06 remaining and helped set up Rome's winning field goal. FS Shakiel Smith (#4), came through clean on a designed run blitz that ended up hurrying Marshall QB Willy Korn's throw.

KICKER RYAN ROME'S GAME-WINNING FIELD GOAL AS TIME EXPIRES GIVES TULANE A 32-31 VICTORY OVER MARSHALL IN SEASON FINALE

Senior CB Davis comes up with first career interception to set up game-winner in his final game as a member of the Green Wave | After team fails two-point conversion to tie the game, Geezy puts faith in his defense and it pays off | Tulane finishes 2010 season with 4-8 record, surpassing last season's win total

Huntington, WV -- The Tulane Green Wave pulled off a mild upset in their 2010 season finale, defeating the Marshall Thundering Herd 32-31 Saturday on the road. Green Wave PK Ryan Rome's 33-yard field goal as time expired gave the Wave its first ever win over Marshall in school history. The kick was set up a few plays before when CB Phillip Davis, playing in his final game at Tulane, came up with the first interception of his career with just 1:06 remaining in the game. The big play set Tulane up with a first down at the Marshall 30-yard line, allowing the team to run four plays to milk the clock and set up for their winning field goal.

Prior to the interception, the Green Wave had cut their deficit to two following freshman back-up RB Orleans Darkwa's 12-yard touchdown run that made the score 31-29 with 1:31 remaining. However starting RB Albert Williams , who finished with a game-high 158 rushing yards, was stuffed on a power off-tackle play on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, leaving Tulane with a deficit and leaving head coach D. Geezy with a decision...Kick the onsides kick or kick it deep and put the game in the hands of a defense that has let the team down all year long.

He decided to kick it and play defense, setting up Davis' interception on 2nd and 8.

"I made the decision to play the odds," said Geezy.

"The chances of recovering a non-surprise onsides kick at this level are about 13%. I felt that if we really buckled down and focused on defense, we could make a play and Davis did just that.

"I was very surprised that they attempted to throw there. We came out in a run-stuffing defensive look and they decided to check out of it and throw the fade on Davis' side like they did earlier in the game. This time it cost them."

Tulane finishes its first season under Geezy with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-5 Conference USA record. Both totals surpass the team's 2009 marks, when they finished 3-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Notes: Tulane played the majority of the game without starting sophomore QB Ryan Griffin, who left the game in the first quarter with a dislocated elbow injury. Redshirt junior QB Joe Kemp finished the game for Griffin and went 13 of 26 for 188 yards while throwing one touchdown and one interception. The team was already without both of its starting wide receivers, senior Casey Robottom and sophomore D.J. Banks, who sustained injuries earlier in the season.

Yeah this is about what I wanted from the outset of this dynasty. I didn't want to completely stink up the first year but I also did not want to have a good year. This has been an ideal start & pace.

Williams currently leads the nation in rushing. In hindsight, I wish I had highlighted this more during the year. Sadly, Mark Ingram is right on his tail and if he has a big bowl game (180+ yards), he will surpass Williams.

Hopefully next season Griffin will stay healthy, and Albert Williams just keeps beasting. Lets get the off season over with so we can get to next year :hungry:
Griffin getting hurt definitely got old fast. Back-up QB is a priority and if I can get a QB that is a little more mobile, he will challenge Griffin for a starting spot.

I am going to wait for this week's tuner set to come out before proceeding so this thing will be on hold for a brief period. I will still have updates though, as you will see shortly...just not in-game related stuff.

Crazy stuff with Davis snatching his first career INT to set-up the game-winning field goal in his final game. Anxious to see how the off-season unfolds for you!
Yeah I am afraid about Williams leaving. While his rating is not great, his spectacular year may cause him to leave.

As for Davis...What a way to go out huh? Last play of your career and you make the play of the game. He also had a career-high 10 tackles in the game.

Yeah, like everyone else, I am not expecting much from this year 1 recruiting class. Hopefully I can find a player or two that is at least decently rated.

                .....Stanard

                Tulane | D.C. Stanard fired
                Sun, 28 Nov 2010 7:11:49 -0700
ESPN's Erin Andrews reports that the Tulane Green Wave have fired defensive coordinator Steve Stanard. Stanard, who runs a base 4-3 defense, recently completed his second season at Tulane. His defense ranked 117th in the nation this past fall and his unit was victimized on several occassions late in games. ""I have great respect for Steve and he certainly brings a ton of experience with 20 years of coaching college football under his belt,"" said Green Wave head coach D. Geezy. ""It is always a tough call but this is a results oriented business. I have a couple of guys in mind and a type of defense in mind in terms of scheme. Expect a hire here over the next few days after a quick interview process.""

Definitely changing the defense I use. The standard 4-3 wasn't working for me. I may go 4-2-5, multiple, or 3-4.

I am leaning away from playing cover-2. The CPU just picked me apart this year with that. I plan to turn up the pressure next year.

That's an option. I do want to get to the QB more though with some creative schemes.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Just a quick note to everyone, I am going to try to get my conference championship/Heisman/bowl game results posted in the next day or so. I am actually going to wait until this week's tuner set patch before proceeding to the off-season menu so I apologize for the delay.

GEEZY NAMES GEORGIA TECH ASSISTANT CHARLES KELLY NEW DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR & ASSISTANT HEAD COACH
Former Yellow Jackets' secondary coach will bring "Multiple 4-3/3-4" defensive scheme to Green Wave | Geezy and Kelly previously worked together at FCS level

                        By Erin Andrews, ESPN.com

On Sunday, Tulane head coach D. Geezy announced that the team's defensive coordinator, Steve Stanard, had been fired. On Tuesday, he already has his replacement hired as the offensive-minded head coach announced Georgia Tech secondary coach Charles Kelly as his new defensive coordinator & assistant head coach. Kelly, who has spent the past five seasons at Georgia Tech, inherits a defensive unit that ranked 117th this past fall.

The former Auburn defensive back will employ a ""multiple package"" defensively, which entails the use of both the 4-3 and 3-4 defensive formations. One of the primary players in Kelly's scheme is the "SLASH" linebacker, a hybrid player capable of playing both as a 3-4 outside linebacker or 4-3 defensive end.

Geezy is familiar with Kelly's defensive schemes, having spent time with him at Divisional 1-AA Nicholls State, ironically under Kelly's tutelage.

"I am very familiar with Coach Kelly and I know he likes to coach an aggressive, blitz-heavy game out of both personnel units. He especially likes to send blitzes out of the secondary," said Geezy, who is the play-caller for Tulane's 26th ranked scoring offense.

"I literally made this man's play-call sheets at one point in my career & have spent countless hours and late nights breaking down film and game-planning with him. As time has gone by obviously I have gravitated more to being an offensively minded guy but certainly the principles taught to me by Coach Kelly early on were of great benefit. There is no question in my mind that he will turn this thing around with not only his intelligence, but also as a motivator. I really feel like his style will complement our offensive style very well."

Over the last three seasons, Georgia Tech has recorded 34 interceptions. In 2008, the Yellow Jackets recorded 18 INTs, including three by true freshman CB Rashaad Reid, who was a second team Freshmen All-American.

In 2009, Kelly helped develop a number of cornerbacks including Mario Butler, a 14-game starter, and Jerrard Tarrant, who picked off two passes last season including one for a touchdown in the FedEx Orange Bowl. Tarrant was responsible for all four of Tech's non-offensive touchdowns in 2009. In 2008, Tech ranked in the top 30 nationally in total defense and scoring defense.

"What I see here is a unit that lacks identity," said Kelly.

"I will tell you this...this conference will know our identity very quickly. We are going to attack from all angles and force turnovers. If there are two things we're going to hang our hats on, it's hitting the quarterback and creating turnovers."

Kelly, a former defensive coordinator at three different schools, served as the Yellow Jackets' special teams coordinator in 2006 and 2007, He was instrumental in making Georgia Tech into one of the nation's best special teams units in 2007. That group went from 119th in the nation in kick return defense in 2006 to second in 2007. Under Kelly's guidance, P Durant Brooks and PK Travis Bell each earned first team All-ACC accolades. Brooks earned the prestigious Ray Guy Award in 2007 and recorded the highest career punting average in ACC history.

Kelly spent the previous four seasons at Nicholls State, an NCAA Division I-AA program that captured the Southland Conference title in 2005. Under Kelly, who served as defensive coordinator during his final two years at Nicholls, the Colonels finished as the top-ranked defense in the Southland Conference in 2005 and 17th in NCAA Division I-AA. Nicholls led the Southland in total defense and rushing defense while ranking second in scoring defense. Kelly was instrumental in developing two-time All-American CB Chris Thompson, who was drafted in 2004 by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A 1990 graduate of Auburn with a degree in Secondary Math Education, Kelly played defensive back under former Auburn Tiger head coach Pat Dye. His senior class put together a four-year record of 39-7-2 while participating in four bowl games. In 2002, Kelly earned a master's degree in Education from Troy State.

"I could not be more excited about today's hiring," said Geezy.

"We're going to work hard this off-season to improve on that side of the ball. One of our first objectives will be to figure out who our SLASH linebacker will be, either through recruiting or via a player already on our current roster.

"We're scoring points and if we can figure out how to get some stops and some turnovers, this team could do a lot of damage in the near-future."

Kelly will start his new position immediately and will not coach the 11th ranked Yellow Jackets in this year's Sun Bowl versus USC.

ESPN's Pat Forde reports that in somewhat of a mild upset, Tulane S Shakiel Smith has been named the school's very first Jim Thorpe Award winner. Smith, a sophomore, recorded a team-high 106 tackles, including 86 solos and 16 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and 1 interception in 2010. ""This guy is one of the better defenders I have had the pleasure of coaching and he's only going to get better since he is only a sophomore,"" said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

Alabama RB Mark Ingram is his closest challenger, with 1,503 yards however through 13 games as compared to Williams' 12 games played. Ingram needs just 110 yards in the BCS National Championship game versus Boise State in order to surpass Williams.

Thanks man...Coach Kelly is a good friend, former colleague, and an up & coming coach. I think he'll be a head coach IRL one day.

As for the ""SLASH"" position, I may possibly move one of my starting DEs, Austen Jacks (6-3 234, 71 ovr) or Shane Delery (6-3 263, 72 ovr) to the spot depending on the ratings hit they'd take. For reference: 2010 Tulane Green Wave Roster

If worst comes to worst, we'll have to play the position by committee with the DEs and a returning OLB. Getting a 4-star hybrid OLB to play the spot in the next year or two is the goal though. I'm going to hit recruiting hard looking for the perfect guy for the scheme.

Sure did. The background stuff written in that story is all factual.

There are a lot of subtle references to my personal background throughout this dynasty, it helps make this thing more fun for myself and I imagine it makes the writings feel a little more natural to the reader.

Just one season...I quickly got an offer for bigger and better things in the off-season and me being a family guy, coaching at the 1-AA level wasn't paying the bills.

Just one season...One fateful off-season I was in the right place at the right time and got an offer to move on to much bigger and better things (which I would prefer to keep private).

I guess you can say there is something psychological about my dynasty reporting...It allows me to live vicariously through my alter-ego, D. Geezy, and write a story about what could have been had I stayed down the coaching path of football. Or in the case of this story line, if I were to get back into coaching.

If you can get some good blitz packages out of it, it should help ease some of the pressure on your secondary. You can clearly score, so if that defense can improve even just a little, you should be able to improve that record immensely. Nice to see Shakiel Smith win the Thorpe award, he should continue to be a force on your defense. Looking good as always man, looking forward to seeing what you do the rest of the offseason.
Yeah I am looking forward to it too....If EA would just hurry up and release this friggin' tuner set I can move on with things!

I want my progression this off-season to reflect whatever changes they're making and I also want any recruit that gets generated from this point forward to be generated post-tuner. So right now, it is just a waiting game

Yeah hopefully...A lot of my defensive improvement will come from playing better offensively I think. I.E. Taking care of the ball better turnover-wise, playing a bit more of a conservative/ball control style, etc.
