Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)

    Hello, Los Angeles Chargers!

From this point on in this dynasty:

    - The Chargers will be referred to as the Los Angeles Chargers. All mentions of the San Diego Chargers in the prior posts of this thread, dating back to the start of the 2017 season, have been edited appropriately.

    - Of course, in the game, they will remain the San Diego Chargers. When the Jets play the Chargers on November 26, they will play in San Diego, but for all intents and purposes, I will refer to them as playing in Los Angeles, at the StubHub Center, even though the screenshots that I will post will clearly show Qualcomm Stadium. They will wear their powder blue uniforms in that game, because as of now, that seems to be the primary team color for the Los Angeles team.

    - The abbreviation for the Chargers, used in the League Leaders tables in the Around the League posts, will now be "LAC." Similarly, the abbreviation for the Rams in those posts will change from "LA" to "LAR."

    - When I post the game schedule for each week, in the Scores and Schedules post, I will alter the schedule accordingly, if need be, to ensure that the Rams and Chargers do not play at the same time on the same network, as NFL television rules prohibit that for teams in the same market (i.e. Giants/Jets).

    - In my NFL Standings table, I will use the Chargers logo shown above, until additional logos become available by the organization in real life. When the helmet logo is released, I will incorporate that into the table.

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)

Looks like the Jets are finally starting to get on a roll, and Marcus Mariota is proving to be that QB the Jets needed. With the Patriots being terrible, I'd say the division is yours to lose.

It sucks that you can't move the Chargers to LA in a cloud franchise, that's another reason why I always use an offline save file. I do like your alternate way to go about it tho.

Also, will you be editing the 2017 generated rookies into real life prospects or will you be starting that in 2018? I can help you out either way if you need it!

That's the highest compliment anybody can give me, being so riveted that they can't help but read through everything that I have to offer. Thanks for doing that, man!

                Jets Gameday Preview: Week 7

The Jets hit the road for the second time in 2017 to play their second game in the state of Florida. Get ready to see the debut of the brand new rookie class!

Just when Dareon Warfield was set to come back from his dislocated elbow, he magically disappeared, replaced instead, by one Mike Williams, the former standout wide receiver for the Clemson Tigers, who won the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship right here at Raymond James Stadium. That's funny, but what's even weirder is that all of the rookies, from all 32 teams, vanished, replaced by real life counterparts. That's right folks, I spent about 7 hours over the course of 3 days editing every single rookie, replacing them with what supposedly will be the 2017 NFL Draft class. I'm done with that, and ready to play again, so let's go!

These two teams are basically mirror images of each other, teeming with young talent. Not only do you have the first two overall picks in the 2015 draft, Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, you also have the first two wide receivers taken off the board in the 2017 draft, Mike Williams, and Western Michigan's Corey Davis. Don't forget about two of the league's most explosive young runners, Todd Gurley, and Doug Martin, and two consistently All-Pro pass catchers, Rob Gronkowski and Mike Evans. Oh yeah, and who did the Jets trade to Tampa in order to draft Mike Williams? That's right. Darrelle Revis. Revis Island is making his second tour in Florida well worth it. Furthermore, on paper, these teams almost mirror each other, wit similar offensive and defensive team statistics through five games this season. Did I mention they also have identical records?

I think we've covered the Tampa Bay offense, but I just want to remark on their receiving core. Evans and Davis join newcomer Willie Snead, tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and a pair of Michigan rookies, wide receiver Amara Darboh and tight end Jake Butt. When all of these young studs fully develop, this offense has the potential to be one of the best in the league. Wow.

The defense is also relatively young, excluding Revis, but has been playing very well this season. The Jets' defense still finds themselves atop every major category, but the Buccaneers aren't that far behind. For Dirk Koetter's defense, it's Robert Ayers, Jr., William Gholston, and Gerald McCoy as the standouts up front, but this entire team has so much depth, and we will see a great deal of guys like ex-Patriot Trey Flowers (boy did he get out of there in time), Noah Spence, and Clinton McDonald. You'll find another ex-Patriot on the other side, sometimes playing defensive end, most times playing outside linebacker: Rob Ninkovich. Who would have thought that he could ever elude Bill Belichick's grasp? Anyway, at the inside linebacker spots, we'll mainly see Kwan Alexander and Nate Irving, but Sio Moore, whom RoundingThird absolutely adores because he went to UConn, figures to work in some reps as well. Finally, Lavonte David will be opposite Ninkovich at the other outside linebacker position.

As we get into this secondary, you can quickly understand why it's the strength of this time. Not only is there the aforementioned Darrelle Revis, who will be shadowing Vincent Jackson (we hope), but the Bucs also have Brent Grimes, and the young, but talented, Vernon Hargreaves III, and that's just at the cornerback position. You almost feel bad for the other two corners, Patrick Robinson and Jude Adjei-Barimah, who was coached by Sam Freday at Bowling Green, two decent players in their own regard that have seen plenty of bench time with this trio holding things down on the field. Another ex-Jet, Jaiquawn Jarrett controls one safety position, while the other is a heated competition between veteran Chris Conte and rookie Eddie Jackson, all healed from the broken leg that ended his senior season at Alabama in 2016. All in all, Tampa Bay features some of the most notable rookies to come out of the draft, as well as some of the league's most notable established players, Winston, Evans, McCoy, Revis, etc. This could be fun, given the way these teams stack up.

Gameday Recap: Jets 38, Buccaneers 27
Jets win with defense, overcoming two red zone picks and two 4th quarter picks by Mariota

Muhammad Wilkerson is having a really good year. It's so great that the Sam Freday decided to franchise tag him after the two sides couldn't make a deal in the offseason. Here he is sacking and stripping Jameis Winston, setting up Erin Henderson's fumble six in the 1st quarter.

The Jets should have won this game 52-17, and there’s no two ways about it. But, the way the first quarter went, I might have thought the Jets were going to lose 52-17. You see, Tampa’s offense was unstoppable for the first 15 minutes, and it looked like Famous Jameis was going to torch the Jets secondary just like Derek Carr did last week. They settled for a field goal the first time out, but the Jets went three and out, and gave the ball right back to the home team, and one play after the punt, Doug Martin broke a couple of tackles en route to a 57 yard touchdown run. While Marcus Mariota tried to warm up in the midst of a driving rainstorm, T-Gurls got the Jets on the board, outdoing his Tampa Bay counterpart with a 62 yard touchdown of his own, not even 90 seconds later. But, the Buccaneers’ offense started moving it down the field again, rarely seeing third down. It was Winston to Evans, Winston to Davis, hand offs to Martin, averaging 8 or 9 yards a play. But then, the Jets got lucky. Mo Wilkerson hit Winston squarely in the ribs. Winston coughed it up, and while Wilkerson held him down, Erin Henderson scooped it up and took it to the house, somehow giving the Jets a 14-10 lead, despite 7 passing yards and 6 total offensive plays from the Jets. It took one more Tampa drive before the Jets D really started playing well. Half of the team gave up and watched Winston’s 16 yard TD pass to Willie Snead, who went untouched on a crossing route. How pathetic is that?

There goes Henderson! After scooping up the work done by Wilkerson, the Jets backup linebacker sprints 48 yards to pay dirt. Seen behind him, among others, are Wilkerson (96), who held down Winston (3), long enough to prevent a Buccaneers recovery.

Alright, now it was offense time. Mariota found his outlet, Gronk, and realized that virtually nobody on the Bucs could stop him, so for the rest of the game, when in doubt, fire it to Gronk. The tight zone defense from the Bucs, a staple of the Jets defense, shut down Gurley for much of the rest of the game, after that long run in the first, and over time, forcing the Jets to rely on the air attack is a recipe for success…. For the defense. But first, Mariota capped a six minute drive by scrambling out of the pocket, then diving for the pylon, putting the Jets back in front 21-17. Now, the Jets got the ball back, with a golden opportunity to take a double digit lead, but that pesky zone coverage of the Buccaneers covered up all of the Jets receivers. RoundingThird, being the idiot he is, didn’t think that mattered, and made Mariota force it into Devin Smith, who was the opposite of wide open. Vernon Hargreaves snatched it at the 3, with seconds to go in the first half. The Jets almost got Doug Martin in the end zone for a safety, but they were out of timeouts, so they couldn’t get another crack at it, and the half ended harmlessly.

Before he started falling apart, Mariota made this nice play, making something out of nothing, scrambling 14 yards and diving head first into the end zone to give his team a lead.

The Jets worked the ball to midfield on the first drive of the third quarter, but had to punt. Lachlan Edwards pinned Tampa Bay inside the 15, and a sack put the Bucs in dangerous territory. On third and forever, Jameis scrambled right, in the end zone, not seeing Dion Bailey coming on his blind side. He was sacked, and fumbled the ball on purpose, to prevent a safety. The center, Evan Dietrich-Smith, fell on it, at the 1. The fantastic field position for the Jets, starting at midfield, only ended up in a beautifully struck 45 yard field goal from Nick Folk, and the score was only 24-17. On that ensuing kickoff, however, it was Elijah Lee, the player formerly known as Reid Heck, coming straight down the field and popping Willie Snead. As we learned on that play, Snead should not be returning kicks, because the ball popped right out, and there was Erin Henderson (again). But hey, you can’t have it all, right? Starting in the red zone, Super Mario decided to throw another interception, this time to Lavonte David, costing the Jets (potentially) their second touchdown of the moist afternoon, and keeping it a one score ball game. But, that Gang Green defense was playing much better, getting pressure on Winston, and affecting one out of every three throws, and completely shutting down Doug Martin. So, they forced Tampa to punt, and this time, the offense moved it down the field and CONVERTED in the red zone, Mariota finding Kenbrell Thompkins for his first touchdown of the season. But, that’s when it got wonky.

Running short on time, down 14 with 3 minutes to play, the Bucs had to go for it on 4th down from inside the New York 10. Dee Milliner swatted away Winston’s pass to Evans. Some might have thought that Milliner could have picked it and taken it to the house, but he didn’t, and the Jets took over at their own 9. After trying to run it twice with Gurley, getting stuffed, Mariota stared Vincent Jackson down all the way, even though he was covered by Brent Grimes. So, when he threw it up to him, it was no surprise that Grimes snatched it out of mid-air and literally walked into the end zone, getting it back to a one score game with 2:38 left to play.

Wassup, Brent Grimes? I hope you know you got lucky. If RoundingThird wasn't such an idiot, you would never have gotten that pick six.

MarMar wasn’t done blowing it. I can’t blame him though. I blame my inability to read the defensive coverage. On another third down, in which the run game hadn’t been effective, Mariota rolled out on play action, got flustered when he saw Gerald McCoy gaining, and tossed the ball up into what he thought was the middle of nowhere, when in actuality, it was the middle of Kwon Alexander’s abdomen. Now, the Bucs had a very realistic chance to force overtime after being down 14 with 3 minutes to play. Winston hit Amara Darboh twice on the sideline, but the Jets defense stepped up, and forced three straight incompletions. In field goal range, Dirk Koetter decided to bring on Roberto Aguayo for the field goal, to cut it to 4, and then play his odds with the onside kick, knowing that even if the Jets recovered, which they did, he still had three timeouts. If his team forced a three and out, the worst that could happen is that the Jets got a field goal, and stretched the league back to 7. But, on that third down, Mariota found Gronkowski who made a couple Buccaneers miss and scored his first touchdown of 2017, and finally put the game away, even though it should have been over a long time before, with a score that greatly favored the Jets, instead of some 11 point shenanigan of a victory.

Gurley didn't have a great day, but this 62 yard touchdown padded his stats, making it seem like he was more effective than he really was. But, hey, a touchdown is a touchdown, so we'll take it.

Yeah, but one of these days, we're gonna get beat soundly. The offensive line's performance is slowly deteriorating. As a unit, they're as bad as our secondary, if not worse. Mariota consistently gets sacked 4 or 5 times per game. The defense has been forcing turnovers, and we've been getting lucky. That could end at any time, and we could fall into a rut. Plus, we've played 4 home games already, with 1 more next week. So, 6 of the last will be on the road. Can't take any of those games for granted.

                      Thanks for checking in!

                              Jets Gameday Preview: Week 8

We're back at MetLife for the second meeting of 2017 with the Dolphins. It's sad to think about, but we're still in October, yet after today the Jets only have three home games left.

The last time the Jets lost? September 17th, in South Florida, to these very same Dolphins. It was Mariota's first game as a Jet, and despite a pick six by Dee Milliner and a lead entering the 4th quarter, the Jets lost. Why? Well, Mariota threw 3 fourth quarter interceptions. Since then, however, this Jets offense has begun to click, averaging 39.8 points in the 4 games since falling to 0-2. It's unrealistic to think that this will go on forever; the Jets are bound to lose at some point. But will it be today? The Jets defense has been playing great, and certainly shut down this Dolphins in the first meeting. The majority of their points were set up by those 3 Mariota turnovers, so it really wasn't the defense's fault that the Jets lost that game.

The key to avoid the season sweep? Stop Dalvin Cook. The Jets did a splendid job the first time, when Cook was performing under a different name. If they can stop the Florida State rookie and make Ryan Tannehill throw, they'll likely be in good shape, but the Jets are prone to being carved up in the secondary, like Derek Carr and Jameis Winston have done the last two weeks. The Dolphins have just enough weapons to pick you apart through the air. You know about their big three: Jarvis Landry, Jordan Cameron, and Devante Parker, but rookie Amba Etta-Tawo can beat you when he actually gets the ball (he's been fighting a losing battle for targets) and Leonte Carroo can get the job done as well especially against a Jets secondary that is not very deep. What enforcers they do have will be focused on the aforementioned "big three." On the other hand, if they can't keep Cook out of his kitchen, or decided that they forgot how to tackle, this could be a LOOOOOOOONG day for the Jets. They might have the best rush defense, but that only means they're due for something big against them.

It's Mario Williams' turn to lead this star-studded Dolphins D-line. He's tied with Brandon Graham of Philly for the league lead in sacks, and will be going against a Jets O-Line that averages 3.5 sacks against through 6 games. Like every other time we've played Miami, Williams is joined up front by Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh, both of whom can get hot and pile up the sacks faster than anybody in the league. Now, we thought Kiko Alonso was supposed to be the tackles machine and defensive captain of this team, but after two weeks of phenomenal play, Ohio State rookie Raekwon McMillan has taken over the starting job. Of course, Alonso still sees action, but he's been battling injuries for most of this season, and much of last year as well, so maybe it's a good thing, for his health, that he's taken a little bit of a back seat here. Not taking back seats, however, much to the Jets' dismay, are Koa Misi and Jelani Jenkins, who have grown to become "Jet Killers," after years of fantastic games against the Jets. Finally, Reshad Jones heads an otherwise weak secondary that features Xavien Howard, Josh Robinson, and rookie FS Desmond King, straight outta Iowa. Garrett Hartley kicks, Matt Darr punts. You Good? We Good. Let the Battle for First Place (not technically, but a Dolphins win gives them the tiebreaker, and we'd be tied in the win column) commence.

Gameday Recap: Jets 37, Dolphins 13
Jets cap 5th straight win with two touchdowns in last two minutes

Rob Gronkowski boxes out Reshad Jones like a power forward to bring in the game's first touchdown on the home team's first possession, as Miami rookie Raekwon McMillan (5) watches from afar.

Yes, we know what sportsmanship is, and the unwritten rules of the NFL. We understand that when the game is in hand, you run the clock out. But when you get the ball on an onside kick, and then intercept a pass at the opposition’s 30 yard line, it makes sense to score. It really does, even though most teams do it. The reason the Jets chose to do it was because Todd Bowles was upset with his defense’s performance in the second half after a fantastic 1st half in which they held Miami to 3 points and forced two turnovers by Ryan Tannehill. Coach Bowles wanted to make a point, and have his offense finish it off after his defense appeared to take a nap in the second half. So, the Jets broke through for 14 points on two rushing touchdowns in the final minutes. If Adam Gase didn’t like it, he can deal with it. After all, who’s got a 2 game lead in the AFC East? Not the Dolphins, that’s for sure.

This game couldn’t have started much better. Miami got the ball first, and the Jets stuffed Dalvin Cook on the game’s first play, so Ryan Tannehill decided to throw it deep on second down. The problem was, he forced it into Jordan Cameron, who was double covered by Dee Milliner and Rontez Miles. When Tannehill then proceeded to overthrow it, after Cameron was double covered, Miles snagged it pretty easily. Unlike the last couple of weeks, Todd Gurley found success running the ball early, allowing Marcus Mariota to have a flawless first drive, and eventually an extraordinary game. That first drive was capped by a perfectly placed throw and an athletic move by Gronk to make it 7-0.

Rontez Miles gets the game started off right, capitalizing on Ryan Tannehill's poor decision making.

Tannehill responded by leading a nice drive, realizing the key to beating the Jets pass rush was to get the ball out quickly, like Tom Brady always used to. The Dolphins got inside field goal range, knocking on the door of the red zone, when Coach Gase called the read option. If Tannehill had given it to Cook, he probably could’ve had a decent game. But instead, Tannehill kept it, and was stuffed by a medley of Jets, including Leonard Williams, Darron Lee and David Harris. The nearly simultaneous hit on Tannehill by that threesome caused the ball to pop right out, and it was a lurking Rontez Miles that ended up falling on it after the ball bounced around for a while. So, in the first quarter alone, Miles had a pick, a fumble recovery, and a couple of tackles. But on that ensuing Jets drive, the biggest problem of the day, third down dropped passes, was born. Like it had for the last month, the Jets offense looked nearly unstoppable, but as they got into the red zone, Mariota tried to dump it off to 3rd string tight end Kellen Davis with a perfect floater of a pass, but it hit off Davis’ hand and went out of the end zone. A Nick Folk chip shot field goal was a decent enough consolation prize that made it 10-0. The Dolphins went three and out, and the next Jets drive was almost a carbon copy, but it was a wide open Kenbrell Thompkins dropping the ball on a crossing route. He had first down yardage and could have easily gotten it down to at least the 10 yard line. Instead, the Jets settled for a 49 yard Folk field goal that made it 13-0, as the two minute warning came and went. The Dolphins moved the ball right down the field, trying to get on the board before halftime. They got inside the five, but a Jets goal line stand, a staple over these last two seasons, forced Miami to settle for three going into the break, so the halftime score ended up being 13-3 Jets.

Leading off the second half, it was Gurley’s turn to drop a pass in the red zone, at the goal line no less. A 20 yard field goal made it 16-3, the third such field goal from Nick Folk that capped off a long methodical drive. After the Dolphins had to punt on their first drive of the second half, they got a chance to get back into the game after a pass from Marcus Mariota bounced off of three different Jets receivers before landing into the hands of Bobby McCain, Mariota’s only mistake of the day, even though you really couldn’t blame it on him. The Jets’ D got off the field quickly, but the Dolphins were in field goal range at the Jets 40, setting up a 57 yard field goal from Garrett Hartley that was more remarkable than anything else, just sneaking over the crossbar and inside the bottom of the left upright. That 16-6 score would end up being the end of third quarter score.

So, moving the ball back down the field, the Jets found themselves in the red zone again. Since there had been plenty of drops earlier in the day, Mariota and Coach Bowles decided to switch it up and get the fullback involved, because who doesn’t love it when the fullback scores a touchdown? Well, I guess the Dolphins don’t. It was 23-6 J-E-T-S! Jets! Jets! Jets! Miami got one last glimmer of hope on 4th and 16 from deep in Jets territory. After knocking Dalvin Cook back 6 yards over the course of two plays, the Jets dropped 7 into coverage, brining 4, but still giving Tannehill room to find Daniel Brown in between two Jets for the third year pro’s first ever touchdown catch. Down 23-13 with 2:25 left, Adam Gase called for the onside kick, which was picked up by Jets fullback Dakota Ball, the rookie out of Alabama. Todd Gurley made a play or two running the ball, making the 8 yard toss outside for a touchdown seem like it was a necessity, even though it might have questioned the laws of sportsmanship.

Darron Lee (50) and Darryl Morris (28) left just enough of a hole in their zone coverage for Daniel Brown to get his first touchdown in the NFL, on 4th and 16, in what was basically garbage time.

Determined to make one or two more plays for pride’s sake, Tannehill overthrew his rookie WR Amba Etta-Tawo, instead finding the Jets’ Marcus Williams, who brought it back a couple of yards to the Miami 30. Once again, a couple of running plays, by Gurley, and designed runs by Mariota got the Jets in striking distance, so it made sense when Mariota fought for extra yards, and the pylon, as time expired, giving the Jets another unnecessary touchdown. But, if the Dolphins were really so offended, then why couldn’t they stop it? This is our division now, as long as we can hold off any sort of late run by the New England Belichicks.
