Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

For my own reference, here's Ole Miss' starting lineup. Too bad we didn't get to play them, I truly think this is the best team we've seen in the dynasty to this point (at least offensively, and likely up there with the '18 USC team that also went 15-0):

      Spoiler

We were a little sloppy, but a win is all that counts truthfully, thanks!

Our defense has bailed us out many times over the years, and this game was no exception. The 35 points UT scored is really misleading considering their pair of defensive scores, but nevertheless I thought they had the momentum as well and were about to take us for an extra frame. That just goes to show the value of a veteran unit. We had six seniors receive starting minutes on that side of the ball this year, so you'd bet they would be up to the task when it mattered most. Clearly, Kent was; I'm going to miss him patrolling the back end next year.

Jordan was real good passing the ball. When he's on, there's no denying his ability, and we've seen that a few times this year (the season opener against Iowa, in particular). We still need to work on his consistency and playing at a high level every game, but I think with a year under his belt and all of his top targets back next year, we'll be in good shape. I truthfully think Jordan could make a Heisman push next season if he can string together several good performances next year, instead of just sparingly. We'll have to wait and see though!

Good win. Always nice to see a double-digit victory season!

Nice that you can nearly plug-and-play with your running backs. Your UCONN Huskies are like if Wisconsin could throw. Excited to hear about the off-season!
10-win seasons has now become the norm at UConn, which is a good thing. We haven't failed to reach 10 wins in several seasons now (2018 being the most recent), so it should go without saying that a loss would have been a letdown.

Regardless of our preseason ranking, if we are not in the New Year's Six next year, I think it will be a disappointment. Our offense is going to be absolutely lethal with most of, if not all, of our skill players returning. If our new-look defense can gel quickly, we'll be right in the hunt for sure.

I can't understate how well we have recruited running backs over the years. Molden was lightly regarded as a recruit, but has stuck around and has developed into a mid-80s overall player, certainly good enough to play on our team. I don't think he'll start next year (he has a fumbling problem), but having lots of depth is awesome as we can keep everyone fresh and create mismatches as necessary. It also softens the blow of (likely) losing J.P. Byers if he turns pro in a few weeks, so we would then have a nice one-two
punch with youngster Swift and veteran Molden next fall.

It's also worth mentioning that we've got a pair of young kids who could start to get time in coming years as well with Jon Shaffer and Scottie Phillips, a big thumper (my favorite type of back). Looks like we're in real good shape at that spot for the future, we'll just need some more pieces in recruiting at some point.

That ole miss squad is what Texas and Oklahoma are looking like in my dynasty right now, and Oklahoma pulled in the #1 class (Texas was #10).

I like seeing a new power in ole miss, it’s fun to see new teams rise up

There were some deserving finalists, but Henderson gets the award this year running away after the Eagles won their first ever conference title and set a school record with their 12 wins. The key behind the Eagles’ turnaround was primarily the Henderson-led offense, led by Michigan transfer JayShawn Bryant, a pair of 1,000 yard tailbacks and All-MAC wideout Derrick Daniels. Head coach Chris Creighton and his staff are popular candidates to get head coaching jobs, but it would not surprise me if Henderson, a Michigan native, simply got promoted to the head coaching job at EMU instead.

Congrats to Coach Henderson on winning the second iteration of this award!

I truly think Ole Miss was one of the best teams, if not the best, team in the dynasty so far, regardless of conference affiliation or result.

I love dynasty mode because of these new teams becoming cream of the crop. UCLA has gone from good to bad to good again, and new teams like Nebraska and Oregon got really good as well. On the other hand, Ohio State, Florida State, Clemson, LSU, Auburn/Alabama and many others are simply average again. It's a really fascinating trend to notice in our simulation to the future here.

Congratulations my friend on another successful season and what an Ole Miss squad! Sheesh. Definitely one that will go down as one of the greats. It will be interesting to see how they follow up their championship run. I will be continuing to check in and follow along! Good luck with the offseason!

UConn losing four to NFL Draft

Oft-injured tailback Byers, safeties Rush, Castalanetta, linebacker Sapp leaving Storrs for shot at NFL millions

A depleted defensive unit is about to get even thinner.

Losing six starters on defense to graduation already, UConn is about to make it nine as three more starters have announced their intention to leave early for the NFL Draft. Or, in the case of Tony Rush, the XFL, because god forbid he’s not good enough to play in the NFL.

UConn is set to lose four players in total to the pros as early declarees, and we’ll start on offense with running back J.P. Byers (91 OVR), who announced he will forgo his fifth year of eligibility. A projected second round prospect, Byers was lost for the year with a broken collarbone in the Syracuse game. He was also hurt for most of his redshirt freshman season with a similar injury suffered in late September. Byers was most effective in his redshirt sophomore campaign of 2021, running for over 900 yards while running in a rotation with Luke Williamson. In part due to a weak offensive line, Byers’ yards per carry dropped from 6.3 to 4.1, and he only finished with 456 yards this year before the injury.

While I long thought Byers to be the most talented tailback we’ve had in a UConn uniform due to his speed and power combo, unfortunately we will never get to see him live up to that potential while in East Hartford. He’ll finish his career with 331 carries for 1,785 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Moving onto the defense now, UConn is set to lose both safeties as strong safety Vic Castalanetta (88 OVR) and free safety Tony Rush (84 OVR) both elected to leave the program as redshirt juniors. Both are set to graduate in a few weeks. Castalanetta was a three-year starter and multiple-time honorable mention All-ACC candidate. Though his numbers dipped a little, Castalanetta was still our most reliable secondary player for a long time. He finishes his career with 159 tackles, 13 for loss, a sack and seven interceptions, as well as a defensive score.

Rush, once rated as the second-best safety prospect in the prep ranks, started at free safety for a season-plus before being benched in November due to erratic play (missing tackles and blowing coverage, notably). Likely seeing the smoke on the wall, however, Rush decided to take his degree and run. It is highly unlikely that Rush will be drafted, but because of his athleticism he could stick on an NFL practice squad or, more likely, in another league. He finishes his career with 121 tackles and two interceptions.

Tony Rush doing what he did best; miss tackles.

Lastly, UConn is also set to lose linebacker Jevon Sapp (88 OVR), a redshirt sophomore. A starter of just over a year, Sapp was a lightly regarded North Carolina native who burst onto the scene when he filled in for injured starter Scott Coffman in 2021. When Sapp tallied several impressive performances back to back, he won the job and went on to be an All-ACC and freshman All-American selection, despite starting just eight games. Sapp shot up NFL Draft futures boards in the offseason, progressed up to an 88 overall, and was the toast of the town entering 2022. Though he had a quiet season in 2022 with just 50 tackles and three sacks, his stock is still good enough to be an NFL prospect and will leave projected as a mid-round selection. He ends his career with 112 tackles, 33 for loss, along with eight sacks, an interception and a defensive score.

With the departures, the defense will need new starters this fall at:
One of the defensive end spots
                    All four linebacker spots
Three secondary spots plus a key backup/former starter

Likely candidates to fill those spots will not be decided until signing day or perhaps even beyond. The only regular starters returning next year are safety Aaron Brook, defensive tackles Tarik Madison and Jeremy Broadricke, and defensive end Kiel Hughes.

Castalanetta returning a fumble for a touchdown against Iowa State on Halloween Saturday, 2020.

Sapp (RIGHT) brings down Oregon’s Kai Tago in last year’s Orange Bowl semifinal.

                    Four Huskies announce transfer intentions

DE Daulton Hiatt, QB T.J. Appleby to UTSA, DE Ontrell Jackson and OT Quendon Shakespeare to Fordham

Continued bad news for UConn, as they are set to lose four young players to transfers. However, this news is possibly a blessing in disguise as UConn was facing a shortage of roster spots entering off-season recruiting and signing day.

Starting with the former Big 12 pipeline, redshirt sophomore quarterback T.J. Appleby (70 OVR) and defensive end Daulton Hiatt (67 OVR), a redshirt freshman, have both elected to transfer to UTSA in search of playing time. Both Texans, the two saw no path to playing time at UConn and elected to go home to seek it. They will have to sit out next year due to NCAA transfer rules.

Appleby was recruited in the 2019-20 class along with Alex Paige as possible QB’s of the future, and obviously neither panned out as such. Hiatt was about to be replaced by close to a half dozen incoming freshmen. Neither player saw the field for UConn in their time with the program.

Two other freshmen announced their transfers down to FCS Fordham in New York. Defensive end Ontrell Jackson (57 OVR), a Bellmore, New York native, and offensive tackle Quendon Shakespeare (58 OVR), from New Jersey, are the two players on their way to the Bronx. Both sat out 2022 as redshirts.

Jackson was in a similar situation as Hiatt - trapped on the depth chart and simply looked for a way out. Shakespeare’s departure is a little more surprising considering he would have been a contender for playing time as a redshirt freshman. However, his departure does open up another roster spot that UConn had been hoping to create for their recruiting class.

We wish all four the best in the future!

At some point I realized that the run/pass ratios were backwards in the dynasty mode, and as such they were entered backwards. That got changed for Coach Willingham and maybe one or two others, but more need work still. As a result, several coaches will see their team stats/philosophies change next year, including (likely) yourself.

Either way, I think your team this year was more geared to a pass first offense, as you had a multi-year starter under center in Piello (before he got hurt) and a capable backup in Horton, plus an all-conference wideout in Bell. Farris still had a good year running the ball for you, anyway. If you stay with the Aztecs I'd expect a down year in 2023 after losing most of your skill guys, but you just never know what will happen sometimes!

If he can stay healthy, a bowl game should be well within reach. He'll be up to ~90 overall and have a nice supporting cast returning... plus, I think a bowl is the only way you'll save your job after next year, so.... there's that.

CHEESE! Long time no see in the thread, I'm thrilled you're dropping in again. 2022 was not quite as good as our national title and playoff appearance in the prior two seasons, but we cannot complain much about 10-3. Next year should be just as interesting with all of the new faces we'll be playing with, but there's no reason to think we can't be in the national landscape once again. If we can straighten a few things out, you just never know!

With the playoff becoming a part of college 'ball, we see more games being played. That's awesome and all, but it also turns the college game into a death match when it comes to scheduling. As a result, with more games against top competition, we see a higher likelihood of losing and fewer undefeated teams, in real life and in our dynasties.

In real life, no team has won the Playoff with a 15-0 record yet, though a handful entered the title game unbeaten (2015 Clemson and 2016 Alabama). In the dynasty, 15-0 has happened four times in nine years (2014 Oregon, 2017 UConn, 2018 USC, 2022 Ole Miss). In other years, however, the title winner had two or sometimes three losses (eh-hem, 2019 Ohio State). The Ole Miss run should deservedly be applauded and celebrated, as the undefeated record is clearly becoming a rarity in today's game.

In any case, Ole Miss will take a step back next year, predictably. Looking at their roster for 2023, though, they have a lot of young kids near the top of the depth chart. I can easily foresee another deep playoff run in two years, perhaps.

That's rough to lose those 4 to the draft, even if Rush wasn't too good. Sucks we won't get to see what J.P Byers was truly capable of.

NFL Season In Review; Destiny Dolphins, Treon Harris win second Super Bowl in three years

Despite facing long odds, the Miami Dolphins knocked off favored opponents on the road in four straight weeks to win Super Bowl LVII. Emerging as the sixth and final AFC entry into the NFL playoffs, Miami finished just 9-6-1 on the season. Knocking off defending champion Cincinnati in the opening round, the Dolphins then beat top-seed Baltimore in the divisional round, followed by another beatdown of the Chargers in San Diego for the AFC Title.

There, they would face the heavily favored 49ers, who have proven to be a dynasty in recent years since adding hometown boy Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. The Niners finished 12-3-1, the top seed in the NFC once again. They knocked off the Redskins in the divisional round, and then the Eagles in the NFC Title Game. The Eagles defeated the Packers in the divisional round, the NFC’s other bye week team. The Packers once again boasted the league MVP in QB Michael O’Connor, the third year in a row he has won the honor. However, the Pack once again could not get over the hump in a loaded NFC.

In the Big Game, the underdog Dolphins defense harassed Rodgers while former Heisman winner Treon Harris took Super Bowl MVP honors for the second time in a 20-14 Dolphins victory. This is Miami’s second Super Bowl in three years and it also led Rodgers into retirement. Splitting his career between Green Bay and San Fran, Rodgers leaves the sport a three-time NFL MVP and multiple time Super Bowl champion, a certain Hall of Fame selection. Harris, meanwhile, continues to assert himself as a possible Hall of Fame contender, now with two titles before turning 30. He also has come out on top in the career rivalry between him and our own Josh Marriner, the two finishing 1-2 in the 2017 Heisman race and playing in that year's national title game (which we won).

London Out Early Again in NFL Playoffs; Diaco in Hot Water

Once again, despite fielding a competitive roster, the London Black Knights simply could not put it all together in the playoffs. The Knights had a roller coaster year, starting 5-1 before slumping to three straight losses before finishing 11-5.

The Knights were viewed as having a tremendous shot at the Super Bowl, entering the playoffs as the #2 seed in the AFC. Once again, however, London met problems in the playoffs, as they could not overcome a charge from the visiting Chargers in the divisional round. This is the fifth year in a row for the Knights reaching the playoffs, but not the Big Game; the franchise is still searching for their first appearance in the game.

Hired as someone to lead the franchise to a title immediately after continued failures of Marvin Lewis, current coach and former UConn head guy (™) Bob Diaco could reportedly be in hot water after a second straight early playoff exit. The Knights featured one of the league’s best quarterbacks in Jerrod Heard, a steady 1,000 yard runner in Silas Redd and a defense led by Jon Cyprien and J.J. Watt. However, the Knights window may be closing as they will lose Watt to retirement and Heard as a free agent to the Brooklyn Beats. Seeing smoke in the distance and a contract offer from Michigan in hand, could Diaco be in line to return to the college game or will he stick it out in London to help Shad Khan try to win a Super Bowl?

                        Other News

The New Orleans Saints own the top pick in the draft this year and are expected to take a quarterback. Two good ones will head the top of the board in Florida’s Chase Browne and Devon McCullough from Ole Miss. The Colts will pick second and the Cardinals third.

Other names to watch in the draft include UCLA’s star quarterback Stephen Francis, a Heisman finalist and likely late-first round pick, and Heisman winner Justyce Tryson, a likely third-round selection from Oklahoma (think Troy Smith). Everyone’s favorite Washington State running back, Patrick Tuivalea, will likely be a late first-round or early second-round pick.

The New England Patriots fired Mike Tomlin for, basically, not being a good coach (what else should we expect?). They missed the playoffs for the umpteenth year in a row despite having a pretty solid GOAT replacement in Clayton Thorson (who, as an aside, I hope my Pats draft in real life next year). UConn’s Stephen Belichick has surfaced as a candidate according to some circles, but is unlikely to take the post at this juncture. Nevertheless, Belichick has not yet agreed to an extension with UConn, so you never know.

                        UConn players in the NFL

No table this time as I'm doing this all off memory, but UConn players continue to largely struggle in the NFL.

Former defensive end and UConn's all-time sack leader Cam Stapleton made his second straight Pro Bowl for the NFC Champ San Francisco 49ers, and started in the Super Bowl. Stapleton tallied ten sacks or more for the second straight year.

Nearing age 30, it remains to be seen how much longer Stapleton can continue his high level of play. As for others in the 2017 class, former running back and Heisman finalist Josh Marriner officially announced his retirement after suffering an MCL tear, his third major knee injury since entering the league five years ago. He'll end his career having rushed for 1,210 yards and ten touchdowns over those five years, split between the Seahawks and a cup of coffee with Diaco's Knights this season.

Corner Jamar Summers has likely entered retirement as well, having remained unsigned for the second straight year. Summers ran into some issues off the field this year, getting involved in a car crash where New York police discovered various drugs in his vehicle, though they reportedly belonged to the other man in the car.

He's not the only one to have issues, either. Sam Rourke, who continues to toil in free agency after past training camp tryouts, was arrested earlier in the year on burglary charges after a 75 year-old man's house was broken into in his native California.

In more positive news, former center and grad transfer Ryan Smelley continues to fight for the starting job with the San Diego Chargers. He's seen action in most of his 32 career games to this point, and has appeared to establish himself as a valuable contributor. Offensive tackle Josh Parrish continues to improve and sits firmly on the depth chart for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wide receiver Rashad Harris continues to stick on the Oakland Raiders' roster, but has had made a minimal impact to this point. However, it is only his second year, so there's still time. Classmate Ross Sinclair, a safety with the Giants, has become a valuable special teamer and backup, recording 10 tackles this year.

Dynamic duo Isaac Jackson (QB, Cowboys), and Luke Williamson (RB, Broncos) didn't see the field this year. Williamson is buried on the depth chart at the moment, while Jackson sat behind Cam Newton, so we can't complain much.

Rookie corner Shav Wade was traded from the Colts to Diaco's Knights at midseason, where he has a good shot to start in 2023. He spent most of the year plagued by a nagging ankle injury, but should be good to go and ready to make an impact very soon.

A long list of guys jumped around active rosters and practice squads this year, including rookies John Cox and Altarri Gardner, as well as veterans Marcus Bradford and T.J. Newell on defense. All four are free agents this offseason and will be looking for long-term homes.

Last post of season nine is next with players leaving and final stats!

I'm really disappointed that Byers never panned out.. he was a rare back who ran with speed and power, I could usually rely on him to get four or five yards if we needed it. With a good offensive line, he could have been very good this year, but ultimately with our subpar line we needed a power runner like Swift to go up the middle, instead of outside and around like Byers. It's probably a good thing for Byers to go pro as his starting spot would not have been guaranteed and he might have ran into similar problems as last year.

I hope Rush ends up in the XFL.. guy was a massive headache for me to play with, missing tackles and blowing coverages. Chalk up one more for a high-profile recruiting bust in this dynasty!

I'm disappointed too that Sapp didn't stick around. I had a feeling Vic C might leave, but Sapp still had a lot of room to grow and develop. Nevertheless, I hope they all pan out in the pros.

Who exactly fills these spots is going to be a fascinating story to follow, and one more headache for me to figure out LOL.. I'd expect a lot of freshmen to contend for time with so many bodies to replace. We'll figure that out soon enough, though.

Holy crap your guys have been bad in the league so far, damn. Hopefully Byers can be a better pro than college player. Jury's still out on I-Jax, Williamson and Shav, let's hope y'all get a star in the league.

Man, decimated by early departures. It seems safeties love to bounce early, I'm surprised by Byer's choice. I'm certainly more shocked he has such high draft stock, although he isn't a first rounder it has huge bust potential.

I love the NFL look in and everything, it's a cool touch. On that note though, Rodgers as a 49er and Newton as a Cowboy is wild. Those UConn guys have had a rough go. It seems Stapleton is well adjusted, the rest don't have much to brag about.

I'm excited for next year. It should be interesting watching basically an entirely new defense on the field. It could lead to some serious shootouts, at least assuming the offense is on point! Looking forward to the offseason.

Just curious, is Rush leaving in game or is that a author's decision? I ask because I've never seen a guy declare when rated that low

Man, finally got caught up (mostly while on the john at work ). Wasn't exactly what you were hoping for in the season but you guys were always right there!

That Ole Miss team is like nothing I've ever seen before. No surprise they didn't lose.

I know you said it may be a good thing some guys departed to make room for the upcoming recruits but man, 8 is a lot of guys to lose. Will be good for me to be able to follow from this offseason fresh and continue on!

The level of detail here is just staggering. I presume you sim rather than play the Madden 25 games?

I thought the backward ratios might be the case. At least my talented QBs prospered. Hopefully my team will adapt well to Coach Brihay's sudden change in philosophy.

As long as we finish better than 5-7 I'll be content.
