Re: OSFM 2018 “Opening Day Version” Available Now

Who knows. In a way, I hope it is, and that probably seems crazy coming from someone who has used OSFM rosters since the days of Knight and company. Here's why I feel this way.

OSFM, while an amazing collaberation of content creators who spend hundreds upon hundreds of hours making the game better for all, is basically at its core a project that allows Sony San Diego to profit off of the free work of volunteers, while they are putting little effort into their side of things. Franchise is stagnant, their fake minor league rosters are junk, and the whole roster editing on console is a really cumbersome process.

SDS faces the challenge that they can't put in real minor leaguers even if they wanted to. There is no minor league union, so they can't just go buy the rights to put in the real minor league players. That is true. So instead of trying to make excellent realistic fake minor league rosters filled with unique players, they have what they have now, a minor league full of players no one wants to play with. I'm not sure how much time they put into this, but I suspect its very little. Because they know the hardcore franchise players are going to use OSFM (which is done for them for free) and the people that play franchise but aren't that hardcore just aren't going to care if their fake minor league rosters stink anyways.

So the presence of OSFM sells the game to many people, Sony profits off of OSFM even though they can't formally acknowledge its existance legally. Everyone involved is creating these rosters for free, spending months of their lives to do so every year. They are being exploited in a way.

So what SHOULD Sony do? They can't embrace or endorse OSFM. They can't pay them. Obviously that would get Sony into a NCAA-like situation. IMO, its actually simple. They could respect the people that are basically, for free, creating content that sells their game for them. How difficult would it be for SDS to create a PC roster editor that would let you import/export rosters from game to PC and vice versa. Let the creators edit the rosters on PC. Allow roster projects to be shared amongst multiple creators on PC. Release the PC editor a month or two before the game actually comes out so the roster editors can get a head start. You could cut down so much of the time it takes to make these this way. If you are going to essentially profit of the free labor of your fans, at the very least make their jobs easier.

For too long I think all of the great content creators here at OS who have worked on OSFM tirelessly have essentially allowed SDS to get a free pass with their own official rosters. If they are going to reap all the benefit, they need to improve their own rosters, or at least make the lives of the people that are improving their game for free as easy as possible.

Anyways, thanks to all who have worked on OSFM over the years. You all, past and present, are an amazing group of people.

Ridin had an opportunity present itself and he took it. Congrats to him!

I am a firm believer in people have to do what is best for them.

I think it is too soon to tell if the project is over. Either way, as a community we need to respect the decision and thank everyone who has contributed for their amazing work over the years.

Best of luck Ridin on your new endeavor!

Saw this on twitter, awesome stuff for him! Would be great to see an OOTP Baseball and MLB The Show 19 merger. Best of both worlds on the ps4.

That would be GREAT! But, the only downside is, then the complete real minor league rosters that OOTP has would have to go away. You can use the name of real people, but not their likeness. So for text sims, they can use the names of real minor league players, but a game like the Show can't without a license to do so. And because there is no such thing as a minor league baseball players association that the show could just pay to license the likeness of all the players at once, we are stuck with fake minor leaguers.

I'm hoping the minor leagues unionize eventually. First, that would allow them to make a human wage (they make 1-2k/month for 5 months, which has to be below minimum wage). Second, this would allow video games to pay for a license to actually put them all in video games.

Big congrats to Ridin! Never played OOTP, but have heard good things.

Hopefully, the full minors rosters continue in some form even if it's not associated with OS.

Re: OSFM 2018 “Opening Day Version” Available Now

Alright folks, let me clear some things up here.

First, there will be a roster for MLB 19, so no need to worry guys. We can end that confusion/speculation right now.

Secondly, the roster is basically finished as of right now. What we are waiting for 19 to drop so we can get faces for all the guys that will be missing and the players that turn generic. Once that time comes we will assign face creators for that.

Like we stated before this will probably (not 100%) be the last set Ridin and myself oversee and work on going forward. He is now with OOTP and his time will be limited. We do have a person in mind that we may hand the reigns over to for MLB 20 and beyond if we move on and do our own thing. So stay tuned for that.

Also, the roster for MLB 19 will not be named OSFM. We started thinking of a new name for the set back in November after we got a cease and desist order emailed to us directly about the OSFM name. Also, given what happened in another thread last week we decided to move away from the OS name since Ridin will no longer be a contributing member to this site on the MLB The Show side of things.

There will be no release date set. The roster will be released when we are ready to release it and there won't be any post here on OS about the release date either (I will keep in contact with a few OSers that I will keep in the loop). Basically, people will just have to guess and just check the vault.

Depending on how we feel after the initial release we might release a few more throughout the season (no promises), but as of now the plan is to drop the Opening Day set and move on from it and you guys can do as you please with the set.

Disclaimer: We may still do one for MLB 20 it depends on Ridin's OOTP workload and what changes have been made to franchise mode in MLB 19.

Question to you masters of creating rosters Ridin, ShowTyme, Ivan.

I'm in a franchise that i'll be carrying over. To get updated prospect faces in my franchise. Could I technically just download one of your files and copy the face information on a piece of paper and then add it the prospect in my franchise.

Example of adding Victor Victor Mesa.

I downloaded the OSFM end of season roster. I copied his face information. I put all the information on a no name prospect and have Victor Victor face?

I will also take pictures of each screen and go off of that. Sometimes it can be easier/quicker than writing everything down.

It is what it is. It wasn't from OS directly and that is all I'll say. Either way the name was going to be changed regardless, based on how things have been on OS the last couple of years. The message was perfect timing really.
