Rutgers Rebounds With Blowout Win Over Struggling West Virginia

    Screen-Shot-2019-09-15-at-5-45-30-PM

    Week 9
    October 29, 2011
    New Brunswick, NJ

The Scarlet Knights bounced back after suffering their first loss of the season last week with an impressive 45-21 win over the struggling West Virginia Mountaineers. Sophomore QB Chas Dodd (2 throwing, 1 rushing) and sophomore WR Jeremy Deering (2 receiving, 1 rushing) each had three scores for Rutgers in the win.

Rutgers would only be down at one point in the game and that was early in the first quarter. West Virginia QB Geno Smith drove the Mountaineers 99 yards downfield and found Cody Clay on a 21 yard pass for a 7-0 lead. Smith would throw for a career high 62 attempts in the loss and 349 yards. He did however throw 3 interceptions, one of which was returned for a TD by Logan Ryan.

In the loss the Mountaineers were without stud WR/HB Tavon Austin who was listed as probable, but did not suit up, which has hurt West Virginia who has now lost 4 of 5 games, including three straight in the Big East.

Following the pick six from Logan Ryan mentioned above which gave Rutgers a 14-7 lead, the Knights would never look back. In fact Rutgers would score 35 straight points capped by a 2 yard TD run from QB Chas Dodd. With the 28 point lead, Coach Rick Ross brought in the backups.

Against the 2nd stringers, Geno Smith would light up the box score with over 100 yards in the final minutes, finding HB Shawne Alston (9 yards) and WR Steadman Bailey (11 yards) for scores to give it a more a respectable appearance on the scoreboard.

In the win Rutgers got back on track of winning the time of possession battle which has given Rutgers success, as they haven't loss when they have had the ball longer..makes sense. Also in the win, the Knights were 8/16 on 3rd down much better then there season average.

Up next the South Florida Bulls (5-2, 2-1) make the trip north to New Jersey. South Florida is coming off of a BYE week, but there last time out they beat a sharp, ranked, Cincinnati team 27-24. Besides a conference loss to Pitt, there only other loss comes to #14 ranked Notre Dame team 38-23 in South Bend.

Rough and Physical Game Leads to Rutgers Win Over South Florida

      Screen-Shot-2019-09-16-at-12-12-24-PM

      Week 10
      November 5, 2011
      New Brunswick, NJ

Mark Harrison took the opening kick off 93 yards to the house for a Rutgers TD and a quick 7-0 lead they would never give up on a cold, brisk, November afternoon. Both teams brought a physical style of play today, which saw multiple minor injuries in the defensive 24-7 Rutgers win.

Sophomore QB Chas Dodd would only play the first half due to numerous minor injuries however he was still sharp finding Harrison (9 yards) and Tim Wright (30 yards) for scores. Dodd was first injured in the first quarter and missed a drive as he broke his toe and needed to tape it, he was then sacked at the end of the half and was experiencing concussion like symptoms. He is listed as probable vs Army next week.

South Florida QB BJ Daniels was unable to get anything going through the air finishing just 10/18 for 101 yards. It was junior Demetris Murray who bruised and battered the Rutgers D for 105 yards and a score. It is just the third time RU has allowed 100+ yards to a back this season. (Ryan Houston, UNC; Vic Anderson, Louisville)

Sophomore HB Jawan Jamison was also banged up towards the end of the game (busied sternum) as he was crushed on a screen play. Jamison tallied 110 yards on the ground before his injury. The young back has found himself just cracking the Top 12 list for the Walker award this year, a great accomplishment thus far.

The only real chance South Florida had of getting back in the game came in the 2nd quarter, kicker Maikon Bonani could have brought the Bulls to within a TD, but missed a 51 yard FG.

Filling in for the injured Dodd, true freshmen Mike Bimonte completed 4/5 passes for 54 yards in the 2nd half. Bimonte beat out another true freshman Gary Nova for the back up job. Nova took a red shirt.

Also in the loss, Rutgers star middle LB Steve Beauharnais sprained his ankle and is listed as probable for the upcoming week.

Rutgers will take a break from Big East play and head 45 minutes north east to West Point, NY next week. They will take on the 2-7 Army Black Knights. Army is coming off a close loss to their rival Air Force. They bring the #26 rushing offense to the table. For Rutgers this is the second time they will face the triple-option in about a month. Upset Minded Army Can't Hang On To Beat Rutgers in West Point

        Screen-Shot-2019-09-17-at-12-15-31-PM

        Week 11
        November 12, 2011
        West Point, NY

Rutgers almost got caught looking ahead to their next weeks matchup, as Army came out firing at home on Saturday and almost upset the Scarlet Knights in West Point. Chas Dodd would struggle all game with his accuracy and the Rutgers defense had a tough go of it in their second time around facing the triple option. Luckily they would be bailed out by their own run game.

Dodd would start 0/2 with 2 interceptions, both of which were to Army defensive back Reggie Nesbit. Nesbit took the 2nd interception to the end zone, giving Army a quick 14-0 lead less than 2 minutes into the game.

Dodd would end up throwing a season high 4 interceptions in the game, as he threw 2 more in the 2nd half. Along with his interceptions, Dodd did throw for 2 scores, one to Jeremy Deering, and the other a beautiful screen catch and run by Mohamed Sanu. Sanu's score came in the 3rd, giving Rutgers a 28-20 lead.

Down 14-0, Jawan Jamison pounded in his first of two scores getting Rutgers on the board in the first quarter. Jamison finished with 138 yards on the ground and also had 2 catches. His second score gave Rutgers their first lead 21-17, they would take a 21-20 lead into the half.

Rutgers senior HB Joe Martinek iced it for Rutgers with a 20 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter. The senior broke free on a 3rd and long draw play on his only carry of the game.

Army punter Chris Boldt muffed a snap late in the 4th quarter deep in their own territory. Rutgers was able to scoop and score for a huge 42-20 lead. Army would score even later in the 4th though, when Steelman found wideout Justin Allen for a score.

Ironically for Rutgers, when playing against the triple-option they seem to give up a bunch of passing yards. QB Trent Steelman had a career high 245 yards through the air in this afternoons game.

With the win Rutgers has entered the Top 25 poll at #24 for the first time since the 2009 season. It will be a tough task to stay ranked however as next week they welcome the #25 ranked Cincinnati Bearcats to New Jersey. The Bearcats enter the rankings after defeating West Virginia quite handedly 45-24. The Bearcats are led by QB Zack Collaros, who has thrown for over 2,000 yards and has a 21/6 TD/Int ratio.

Despite Dodd's Throwing Issues, Interceptions, Rutgers Earns Win Thanks to D

          Screen-Shot-2019-09-18-at-12-03-15-PM

          Week 12
          November 19, 2011
          New Brunswick, NJ

It was a matchup of two Top 25 teams on Saturday night as the #25 ranked Cincinnati Bearcats came to town. Rutgers would enjoy a 17-0 halftime lead, before drastically falling apart in the 3rd quarter. Or shall we say Chas Dodd fell apart. Luckily for Rutgers and more importantly Chas, the defense came to PLAY tonight and earned the team a W.

It was the same old start for Rutgers as Chas Dodd threw yet another opening drive interception. Dodd was coming off a 4 interception game vs Army the week before. Cincinnati though would have the same problem as senior QB Zach Collaros would throw a pick on the teams first play as well giving Rutgers the ball right back.

Things would finally settle down, though Dodd would miss sometime in the 1st/2nd quarters to get checked out in the tent after a hard sack. He would return in the 2nd and throw his 1st of a career high 5 TD's to Tim Wright. The score gave Rutgers a 17-0 lead at the break.

Before Dodd would throw the rest of his career high in TD's, he would look TERRIBLE. Cincinnati would record a record THREE pick six's in the 3rd quarter, all on back to back to back drives. Junior CB Cameron Cheatham would be good for 2 of the 3. In less than 2 minutes in the 2nd half, Cincinnati went from down 17-0 to winning 21-17.

Before the Bearcats would take their turn to crumble, senior HB Isaiah Pead would make it 28-17 with a 34 yard swing route TD reception. The back finished with just under 100 total yards in the game and the score.

Down 28-17, Rutgers D who had only allowed the one score, turned it up. The Scarlet Knights would go on to force 2 fumbles and 2 interceptions, including a pick six of their own from CB David Rowe who went end zone to end zone tying an NCAA record. In all they would go on to score 38 unanswered points in the final 12 minutes. All after allowing 28 of their own.

Four different receivers, a running back, and a defensive back all scored for Rutgers today. It set a record for most players to score a TD in the schools history.

Jawan Jamison again broke 100 yards on the ground, cruising to 133 yards on 28 carries. Jamison is a work horse and is second in the nation in carries.

Chas Dodd has thrown 4 interceptions in two straight games.

Up next, Rutgers heads to a couple hours north to finish up their regular season vs rival UConn. The Huskies (6-4, 1-4) are undefeated outside of Big East play, but have struggled mightily in conference play. The team has currently tossed 4 straight, most recently to Louisville 24-21.

Louisville will take on South Florida on the road. If the Cardinals lose and Rutgers wins, the Scarlet Knights will take the Big East championship for the first time in school history. If Louisville wins, they will be taking the title for the first time since 2006.

Rutgers Barely Able to Sneak Away With Victory Over UConn to Finish Season

            Week 13
            November 26, 2011
            Hartford, Connecticut

The holiday spirit was in the air in Hartford, CT as the Scarlet Knights took on their rival UConn Huskies. Just a few days post Thanksgiving, it seems Rutgers may have still been still recouping as they were lethargic and slow all night in their 25-23 season ending win.

UConn's defense had an answer for almost every play early on whether it be running or passing. QB Chas Dodd continued to trend downwards throwing 3 more interceptions in the game, making that 11 in the last 3 games. Despite a first quarter interception leading to a quick 10-0 lead for the Huskies, Dodd would find Tim Wright in the end zone for a 7 yard score to close out the quarter.

Rutgers defense was able to keep the UConn offense out of the end zone most of the game and come the 2nd half the Huskies settled for two straight FG's to open up play. Down 16-7 was finally when the RU offense came alive.

Jawan Jamison would score on back to back drives in the 3rd and 4th quarters on runs of 1 yard and 8 yards. Jamison again picked up Dodd's slack and ran for 183 yards helping lead the way. He also led all receivers with 7 catches.

For UConn it was Jordan Todman keeping the Huskies in the game. The senior All-American HB, who decided to NOT enter the draft last year ran for 146 yards on the day setting up his team all afternoon.

With a 22-16 lead thanks to Jamisons two scores in the 4th, Rutgers got the ball back after a 4-and out from UConn looking to ice the game. However Chas Dodd would throw interception number 3 leaving the Huskies just 20 yards to score and take a late lead. Sure enough sophomore walk-on QB Blaine Driscoll would do just that finding WR Denzell Allen from 9 yards out.

With a couple minutes left Rutgers was able to get in good field position for a game winning FG. San San Te was having an uncharacteristic night with two misses already. Luckily, he was able to boot the 36 yarder through the uprights to give Rutgers a 25-23 lead. UConn would go 0-4 with 4 incompletion on their final drive, ending the game.

Rutgers now finishes the regular season 11-1 the best finish ever for the program. Unfortunately for them, Louisville beat South Florida 20-16, clinching the Big East championship. Rutgers plays the waiting game now to see what bowl they will be heading to. There is still week 14 and of course Championship Week, so there is quite some time remaining and a lot of movement may still take place.

2011 Season All-Americans Announced, Rutgers Surprises With Three of Their Own

HB Jawan Jamison, SO, - The sophomore back was a lightning rod for the Scarlet Knights offense. With the passing game struggling down the stretch Jamison put the offense on his back leading the team to an 11-1 record.
                299 Att, 1,416 Yards, 4.7 Avg, 12 TD, 32 rec, 361 yards, 1 TD
OL Caleb Ruch, SR - The unsung hero to Jamison's success. Ruch was a monster this year on the line. His 6'4", 290 frame makes him more athletic than most other lineman. His flexibility was key to Rutgers this season as he saw action everywhere but center.
                21 pancakes, 1 sack allowed

DT Scott Vallone, JR - Vallone was a beast up front for the Scarlet Knights on defense. The junior tackle led the team with 6 sacks in his first full season of starting. He also led the teams with tackles for loss with 19, meaning he was always in the backfield.
                39 Total, 26 Solo, 13 Assisted, 19 For Loss, 6.0 Sacks, 1 FF, 1 FR

The Yellowjackets come in ranked #14 in the country. This is the 3rd time this season Rutgers will face the triple-option, as they faced Army and Navy earlier this season, both wins. Georgia Tech just missed out on the ACC Championship game, as they finished in 3rd place overall with a 5-3 conference record. Junior QB Tevin Washington leads with an even 11:11 TD:INT ratio, but he also has over 1,000 yards rushing, one of two Yellowjackets to reach the feat as Junior HB Orwin Smith also has over 1,200 yards on the ground this year.

                      December 30, 2011
                      Orlando, FL

Rutgers ended their season on a high note Friday night as they defeated the #14 ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 30-20. It was the Yellow Jackets first loss to a team outside the ACC all season.

It was a humid, soggy, muddy, rain soaked game and that made for a slippery football that would doom the Georgia Tech triple option. On their very first drive junior QB Tevin Washington would fumble setting up RU with great field position. Rutgers would capitalize with a TD pass from Chas Dodd to Jawan Jamison.

The defense would force 3 straight punts, allowing Rutgers offense to shine in the first quarter. RU would jump out to a 21-0 lead rather quickly. Chas Dodd would throw his 2nd TD of the quarter on a beautiful 32 yard strike to Mohamed Sanu and senior back Joe Martinek would punch it in from the 3 in his final game for the Scarlet and White.

Tevin Washington would fumble again to open play in the 2nd quarter, Rutgers senior K San San Te would take advantage with a 46 yard kick to give RU a 24-0 lead. In his final Rutgers game the pre-season All-American was 3/4 FG and hit 3 extra points to cap a great run for the Scarlet Knights.

Down 24-0, Tech would score 13 unanswered points to get themselves back in the game. Washington would find WR Stephen Hill in the end zone for a short score and WR Daniel McKayhan on a 15 yard catch and run.

With a chance to score again, junior HB Orwin Smith would fumble inside the 20, the teams 3rd fumble, allowing San San Te to eventually tack on a FG and extend Rutgers lead to 30-13.

Rutgers would have 3 straight turnovers giving Georgia Tech a chance to fight back. Chas Dodd who was looking great all game would throw two interceptions in the final quarter and Jawan Jamison would record a rare fumble.

Chas Dodd would finish the game with 258 yards through the air opposed to Washington's 75. No running back was able to break over 100 yards, though Jawan Jamison was just 3 yards short at 97. Mohamed Sanu led all receivers with 94 yards on 6 catches.

For Rutgers it was the teams first bowl win since 2009. The team has a 5-2 record in bowl games including a now 5 game win streak.

Rutgers 2011 Stats and Brief Position Recap

                          Quarterbacks

Coach Ross couldn’t have asked for a better season from the sophomore Chas Dodd. Not only was he learning a new system in the Spread Offense, it was his first time as a full time starter. Sure there was certainly growing pains this season. Dodd did throw 21 interceptions, 11 in the final 3 regular season games. Those 21 picks led the nation and is something he will certainly have to work on in the future.

Despite the interceptions, Dodd broke the school record for passing yards in a season (3, 589) and TD passes in a season (31). Both of those numbers are good for Top 10 in the country and both categories. The bottom line is with most of his weapons coming back next season Chas Dodd could and should make a huge leap forward.

True freshman Mike Bimonte saw limited time as Dodd’s backup. He completed 13/25 passes for 150 yards in total. All in all not too shabby and he did what he was needed. Also the team will have Gary Nova as an option. Nova was redshirted this year as a freshman and could have a bright future with the Scarlet Knights.

                          Running Backs

Probably even more surprising then Chas Dodds play was that of Jawan Jamison. Most Rutgers fans were surprised when 4-star freshman Savon Huggins was red-shirted to begin the season, but now they see why. Rutgers hasn’t had an All-American running back since the Ray Rice era, that changed this season. Jamison led the country in rushing with 1,513 yards on the ground earning 2nd team honors. He also added over 300 yards through the air and he totaled 14 TD’s. Just a sophomore as well, Dodd and Jamison can be a scary duo for seasons to come.

Senior Joe Martinek may have been a tad overshadowed by the stardom of Jamison, but he still averaged almost 5 yards a carry in a secondary role. He saw 54 carried and had over 200 yards along with 4 scores to end his Rutgers career.

                          Wide Receivers

Let the begging begin. Coach Rick Ross has a plethora of pro talent at the wide receiver position and he is hoping his two best stick around for their senior seasons. Of course we are talking about Mohamed Sanu and Mark Harrison both juniors. The tandem combined for 15 scores and just under 2,000 yards on the season. Sanu broke the 1,000 yard mark with 1,116 on 80 catches.

Two other juniors Tim Wright and TE DC Jefferson also had solid seasons in secondary roles. Jefferson a converted TE from QB caught 4 TD’s in his first season as a TE. Wright also had 4 scores and just under 500 yards receiving.

Redshirt freshman Brandon Coleman looks promising for the Scarlet Knights. In his first season Coleman caught 10 passes for 163 yards.

                          Defense

Despite allowing a plethora of passing yards this seaosn, the defense is what kept Rutgers alive in most games this season, and the reason they finished with a 12-1 record. Junior DT Scott Vallone was a 2nd team All-American up front. Vallone led the team with 7 sacks and had 19 tackles for loss!

Rutgers secondary finished the season with 12 interceptions, with three DB’s recording 2. In 2012, 9 of those interceptions will be returning, something Coach Ross will be extremely excited about. Graduating will be LB Manny Abreu and CB David Rowe (2 int). Junior LB Steve Beauharnais had a solid season earning 1st team all Big East honors, Beauharnais finished with 75 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

                            Rutgers Top 5 Recruits

                            1) Joel Andrews, TE - Andrews is the crown jewel of Rick Ross' first recruiting class here at Rutgers. A 4-star product out of Middletown, NY, the 6'7" behemoth will more than likely see time at TE right off the bat. Coming in as the #2 ranked TE in this years class, Andrews chose RU over LSU and Ohio State. Essentially choosing Rutgers based on proximity to home and the fact he will make an impact as a freshman.

                            2) Chris Inman, TE - It's no surprise that under coach Rick Ross there's a much more offensive approach to recruiting than in years past under the Schiano regime. Inman is a 3-star pass-catching TE recruit from RU's backyard in Linden, NJ. Inman is the #15 ranked TE in the class and really was looking forward to staying close to home. He has offers from West Virginia and at the very end of recruiting he got an offer from Michigan, though he stayed pat with the Knights.

                            3) Patrick Johnson, CB - Pat Johnson is a 3-star recruit again from RU's backyard in Paramus, NJ. The Paramus Catholic hard hitter will bolster a DB group that struggled at times last year though does return more than half of their interceptions. Johnson is a smart back with instincts on getting to the football. Rutgers again capitalized on this recruits wanting to stay home.

                            4) Jake Rodgers, ATH - 3-Star ATH Jake Rodgers hails from Washington D.C. The Scarlet Knights plucked Rodgers from the likes of Virginia and Pitt. Rodgers is a versatile player who will most likely see time at WR as he comes in at 6'1", though his speed and agility may set him up well in the run game.

                            5) Michael Purcell, WR - Rounding out Rutgers Top 5 recruits is Michael Purcell. The South Orange, NJ native was set on UConn up until the last week of recruiting, when Ross and WR coach PJ Fleck got him to flip to Rutgers, just a little something to stoke the rivalry some more. Purcell is just the #74 ranked WR in his class, but with Mark Harrison bolting for the draft, there's an opportunity to step up for sure.
