We can always count on the "regulars" to get us through the year. The traditional NBA, NHL, MLB and NFL releases are usually enough to quench the thirst of most sports gamers. But every year there are also a handful of unexpected or atypical sports releases that we can spend even more time playing. Here are five titles to look out for during the rest of 2010.

The latest WWE games don't have any peers to compare themselves to, but that does not mean they suffer from the pitfalls of competition. WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010's main competition comes from over ten years ago, and it is no secret why it does.

WWF No Mercy is the pinnacle of the wrestling games frenzy of the 1990s and still finds itself in a relevant position today thanks to various mods from a small but rabid fanbase.

Ten years since it's release, how does No Mercy get so much love? The answer is that No Mercy encompassed all of what the (then) WWF had to offer. Matches were exciting, the creation modes were stellar, and it featured a full fledged WWF season and featured any wrestler on the game's roster.

While soccer has been the most popular sport in the world for a long time, it has yet to really take hold in the US. It has been a hit with youths but that interest seems to gradually wane with age. With the World Cup in 2010, English Premier League games on ESPN and a rising star in Jozy Altidore, the sport may gain a much larger audience in North America.

Simply put, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 has already sold millions overseas. Now it’s time to take the battle to the place where football has a different meaning.

The NBA Live series has been around forever -- trust me on this, don't actually look it up. But when most people think of NBA Live, they think about the times they played it on consoles like the Sega Genesis or the PS2 or the Xbox 360. But today I will be reviewing the PSP version of NBA Live 10. It's a whole new battleground.

Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 really crept up on me this year. Everyone knew it was coming out, but details were only announced at the end of August, and screens and videos were relatively scarce compared to years prior. Bottom line, the hype train was unusually slow for our yearly WWE game. And, typically when a game gets this kind of treatment, it’s a steaming pile.

But maybe that was the plan all along. Maybe Yukes was trying to lower expectations. Or, maybe Yukes was just implementing a swerve mentality to make everyone think SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 (SvR 2010) was going to be a jobber this year.

If it was supposed to be a swerve, then well played Yukes because this year's WWE production is surprisingly solid.

With the TNA license in flux, Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 is once again the only show in town this year. The focus this year seems to be on improving the "create-a-..." modes. While that’s admirable, the gameplay needs some attention as well. Details are sparse at this point, but let's go through what we know about the game so far.

Gameplay is of course the top dog, but testing your skills across the world has become a staple of sports games. When it works fine nobody notices, but its problems can cause uproar. It’s gotten to the point where playing the AI is boring, even though that’s all we had growing up.

NBA 2K9 led the league in sales and critical acclaim last season while battling against inferior opponents, and has in general been leaps and bounds ahead of the competition for years now. In other words, it's tough being the king. But with the competition finally showing signs of life, NBA 2K10 is now looking to show that it has the goods to hold onto the crown.

The NFC East is perhaps the best division in the NFL. Each team in the division has a realistic reason to believe they can make the playoffs and all of them could also make cases for winning the division.

But who is going to eventually win the division? That is the question which our own Richard Chavez tries to answer after the jump!

The battle for videogame hockey supremacy wasn’t much of a battle last year, as EA seemed to pull ahead with NHL 09. But a lot can change in a year. Previous developer Kush was disbanded in 2008, months after the development cycle of NHL 2K9 was already in full swing, which put the new developers (Visual Concepts) in a tough spot. (If that development studio sounds familiar, that's because it's the studio that's responsible for the critically acclaimed NBA 2K series.)

And the shortened development cycle certainly did hurt NHL 2K9, but it also seems to have benefited NHL 2K10. Visual Concepts took the criticism of 2K9 to heart and is now trying to build the best possible NHL game this year to make up for it. From what I saw, it won’t take long for gamers to notice the improvements.

Madden ratings are not an exact science. For that simple reason, they will be disputed every year until the next version of the game comes out. So with that in mind, it’s time to play the ratings game.

Anybody can throw a punch. It’s evading those punches that make boxing the sport it is. Fight Night Round 4 retains that quality by rewarding patient fighters with a counter-punch system, while also letting knockout artists enjoy their time in the sun as well.

But at the end of the day, while slugfests are fun, they are not conducive to consistent success. Getting a knockout is nice, but winning on the scorecards definitely still counts. So here are some tools of the trade for the sweet science. They won’t guarantee you a victory, but you will avoid the toss-up nature of a brawl.

Boxing became a modern Olympic sport in 1904. The first televised UFC event was in 1993. Their origins can't be argued, but their current popularity certainly can be.

UFC has overshadowed boxing in recent years, creating stars like Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell. Dana White also lured Brock Lesnar into the fold, a fighter who has now become one of the most talked about UFC combatants.

Boxing was once elevated by its heavyweight division, lead by boxers such as Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield. Now boxing relies on its strong welterweight and middleweight divisions. Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Kelly Pavlik are young and exciting fighters, but no one knows if they will be able to sustain the entire sport.

Fans will argue each sport’s entertainment value, equity, relevancy and history until the cows come home. It’s impossible to say which side is correct in almost every sense.

But now at least we have the videogames to judge. UFC 2009 Undisputed was released on May 15 and Fight Night Round 4 on June 25. Let’s get ready to rumble.

Wii Sports is fantastic, but it came out in 2006. In other words, it’s time for a new game to step up with a new batch of games.

Attempting to answer that call is Big League Sports: Summer, which has arrived with the old faithfuls -- golf, tennis and baseball -- but also introduces soccer, football and volleyball to round out the card.

And if rounding up mini-games was the only judge of value, then this game would be well done. But it turns out that quality over quantity still holds true.

After a three-year hiatus, the champ is back to defend its throne. But during the long layoff, we’ve witnessed the returns of Afro Thunder and Little Mac, the rise of Wii Sports boxing, an appearance by Don King and the next-gen debut of Dana White and his UFC crew.

Sporting a new development team and a world of hype, Fight Night Round 4 retains the title and does it every bit as good as its predecessor. Read on to find out how.
