Good to see some fellow Marlins fans on here! I've never thought Cantu was a good fit at 3rd, guess that game proved it. And yeah, offense has been hard to come by so far - hopefully we can get something going against the Dodgers.

Re: Go Fish: A Florida Marlins Franchise (MLB 10)

Opening Night 2010

Ross sparks win over Dodgers in home opener
Marlins 6, Dodgers 4

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins offense finally came to life in their home opener, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 to pull back to .500 in the season's first week.

Cameron Maybin, who had only 1 hit in the season-opening series against the Mets, hit his first home run of the year in the 1st to jump-start the Marlins' offense. The Dodgers re-took the lead in the 3rd, but Cody Ross tied the game in the 4th with an RBI double and then gave the Marlins the lead for good in the 5th with a 2-run single.

Chris Volstad pitched well enough to pick up the win in his first start for the Marlins this year, giving up 8 hits and 3 runs while striking out 4 and walking 1 over 6 innings. The volatile Vicente Padilla surpassed 100 career hit batsmen in the game, plunking Maybin and Gaby Sanchez of the Marlins. He also picked up the loss for the Dodgers, allowing 6 runs over just 4 2/3 innings.

"It was a good day for us offensively, and the pitching was good enough to preserve the win for us," said Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez. "Volstad was efficient with his pitches and we put runs on the board."

Re: Go Fish: A Florida Marlins Franchise (MLB 10)

Baker's 3 RBI lead way in Florida victory
Marlins 7, Dodgers 4

MIAMI -- After playing in temperatures below 40° in New York to start the season, the Marlins have enjoyed their return to sunny south Florida, as their bats have thawed from the cold spell that gripped the team against the Mets.

The Marlins poured 8 hits and 6 runs in against Los Angeles starter Josh Towers, who departed the contest after just 4 innings of work. After hitting just over .200 in the New York series, this is a welcome change.

"It's huge for our confidence as a team to put hits on the board, runs on the board," said Marlins catcher John Baker, who drove in 3 runs on the night. "We're all feeling comfortable."

Even Gaby Sanchez, who had started the season 0-for-16, got in on the action, getting his first base hit of 2010. Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla, the only players in the Marlins lineup to have made an All-Star team (besides pitcher Josh Johnson), were the only Florida starters without hits.

Johnson gave up 10 hits over 7 innings of work, but scattered them well, allowing just 2 runs. Renyel Pinto had some trouble in the 8th in his 2010 debut, giving up 2 runs, but Leo Nuņez shut the door in the 9th for his 3rd save of the season.

"We want to come back out tomorrow and get the sweep," said Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez. "The only thing we can't do right now is get complacent."

Re: Go Fish: A Florida Marlins Franchise (MLB 10)

Long balls power Los Angeles to victory
Dodgers 5, Marlins 2

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins were unable to complete an early-season sweep of Los Angeles, losing 5-2 thanks to sub-par starting pitching, sloppy defense, and an unexpected offensive hero for the Dodgers.

Chad Billingsley not only picked up the win on 7 strong innings of work, but he also hit the first triple of his career during a strange sequence in the 4th inning. Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla committed 2 straight errors in the 4th, which allowed Russell Martin and Blake DeWitt to reach 1st and 2nd with Billingsley coming up to bat. The pitcher, who owns a career .126 batting average, hit a soft liner to the right side that originally seemed to land foul. The first base umpire ruled it fair though, catching first baseman Mike Lamb and right fielder Cody Ross off-guard. By the time Ross tracked the ball down and lobbed it into the infield, Billingsley had picked up the 2-run triple to put the Dodgers up 5-2.

"I thought it was landing foul so I kind of gave up on it," said Lamb, who made his first start of the year for the Marlins. "I should have stuck with it, I could have [gotten the out]. It just barely hit the line on replay."

Although the two runs Billingsley drove in were unearned due to Uggla's miscues, the previous three that Marlins starter Nate Robertson gave up were certainly not. Ronny Belliard, Andre Ethier, and Manny Ramirez hit three no-doubt solo shots to left in the first 3 innings. Robertson, who was making his first start for Florida after being acquired from Detroit, was all 5's, giving up 5 hits and 5 runs while striking out 5 on 5 innings.

"I was hitting my spots, just got a little unlucky on the [home runs]," said Robertson. "And there's not a lot I could do about that triple, just have to tip your cap."

The Marlins stay at home this week as they take on the Cincinatti Reds, who will travel to Miami for a 4-game series.

Series Rewind

Reds @ Marlins

Nolasco fans 10 in Florida victory
MIAMI -- Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco struck out 10 Cincinnati batters over 7 innings on his way to picking up the win over the Reds in the first game of a 4-game series. Cody Ross hit a 2-run homer in the 6th, giving him 7 RBI on the year. Florida drew 6 walks on the night, its highest total of the young season, en route to the victory over a Reds team that was playing without catcher Ramon Hernandez and outfielders Drew Stubbs and Chris Dickerson.

Coghlan's triples spark Marlins' rout of Cincinnati
MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins offense came to life in the second game of a 4-game series against the Cincinnati Reds, winning 7-2. Chris Coghlan hit a triple in the 5th, and then another in the 7th, and was driven in both times on Brett Carroll singles. Coghlan improved on his already-excellent outing by making a leaping catch at the wall that retired Ryan Hanigan in the top of the 9th and likely saved a solo home run. Florida's Anibal Sanchez picked up the victory on 6 innings of work, striking out 8 while allowing just 5 hits and 2 runs

Volstad shelled in Cincinnati win
MIAMI -- The Reds lineup racked up 11 hits and 5 earned runs against Florida Marlins starter Chris Volstad as Cincinnati came back from back-to-back losses to the Fish with a 7-3 victory in the third game of the series. Reds starter Johnny Cueto was excellent, giving up just 1 run through 8 innings before giving up 2 in the bottom of the 9th as he went for the complete game. He ended up getting pulled after 8 2/3 innings but still picked up his first win of the year.

Marlins drop final game in pitchers' duel
MIAMI -- For the second time in his three starts on the year, Florida starter Josh Johnson pitched well enough to win, but ended up getting tagged with the loss anyway. Johnson was excellent, allowing just 3 hits over 8 innings, but 2 of those hits were solo home runs from Cincinnati's Jay Bruce, which was enough to tip the scales towards the Reds. Kip Wells was effective in his start for Cincinnati, working 6 2/3 innings and scattering 6 hits while allowing just 1 run. The Marlins were not able to string together any hits to score after Chris Coghlan's RBI single in the 3rd inning.

Re: Go Fish: A Florida Marlins Franchise (MLB 10)

Robertson injured, but Marlins get win over Phillies
Marlins 7, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA -- The Florida Marlins picked up a win on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies, defeating Jamie Moyer and the rest of the defending NL East champs 7-4 despite a hamstring injury to Florida starter Nate Robertson in the 3rd that forced the Marlins to turn to a patchwork of relievers.

Things looked very good for the Phillies for most of the ballgame, with Moyer neutralizing the Florida offense and with the Marlins forced to eat up 7 innings with their bullpen. But Jorge Cantu struck in the 7th, cranking out a 2-run homer off of the 47-year-old Moyer that chased him from the game and set the scene for Florida's 5-run 8th inning.

"It's good to have our offense step up and fill the void," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez. "Moyer usually eats us alive, so I'm glad we found a way to get him out the game and go after their relievers."

Danny Baez picked up the loss for the Phillies after giving up two costly RBI doubles in the 8th. Cody Ross helped add insurance soon thereafter by blasting a 3-run shot off of Chad Durbin to effectively seal the game.

"We went out and did what we wanted to do, win the first game," said Gonzalez. "These division games are the ones that matter the most, so to come out here and win is huge."

Marlins place Robertson on 60-day DL, call up Andrew Miller

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins have placed starting pitcher Nate Robertson on the 60-day disabled list with a torn hamstring. Robertson sustained the injury at the start of the 3rd inning in the Marlins' 7-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Andrew Miller has been promoted from triple-A New Orleans to the big league club to fill Robertson's spot in the rotation. Sources close to the team say Miller will likely make one appearance out of the bullpen before making his first major league start of 2010.

This is not the first time Miller has been called up to replace Robertson; in 2007, while both players were in the Detroit Tigers organization, Miller was called up to fill in for Robertson, who was placed on the disabled list with arm fatigue. Miller has a career 5.50 ERA and went 3-5 with a 4.84 ERA in 80 innings last year with the Marlins.
