Marlins set lofty goals for 2010 campaign
Despite low expectations and an even lower payroll, the Florida Marlins front office has declared 'playoffs or bust' in 2010

After coming up short of the post-season with an 87-win campaign in 2009, the Florida Marlins have made it clear that this year they have their sights set on the playoffs and nothing else. With a slew of offensive weapons and a solid young rotation, the Marlins will be looking to push the outer limits of the expectations placed on them and break into the playoffs for the first time since their magical 2003 World Series season.

Still, concerns linger. How will the Marlins' bullpen hold up now that they've lost Kiko Calero and Brendan Donnely, two of their top relievers from a year ago? Will defense in the field once again be a concern for this squad? And will injuries and inconsistencies take a toll on the starting pitching down the stretch as they did in 2009? The answers to these questions will likely factor in considerably to how close the Fish can come to their lofty post-season expectations.

One thing is almost certain, however, and that's the impact that Marlins' solid lineup should have on this year's campaign. Anchored by defending Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan and one of the game's best in Hanley Ramirez, the Florida offense should put up great numbers in 2010. Add in the run production of Jorge Cantu, the power of Dan Uggla and Cody Ross, and the speed of Cameron Maybin and Emilio Bonifacio, and you've got a potent offense that should make some noise in the NL East.

As the old cliché goes, it's a long season. Time will tell just how close team owner Jeffrey Loria was when he predicted that the 2010 season will "end with a pile" for these ever-overachieving Fish.

Re: Go Fish: A Florida Marlins Franchise (MLB 10)

Opening Day 2010

Season-opening pitching duel ends in New York victory
Mets 2, Marlins 1

NEW YORK -- In a game where both starters dominated and runs were hard to come by, the New York Mets prevailed over the Florida Marlins on the strength of their fast start.

The Mets scored their only runs in the top of the first on a 2-RBI Jason Bay double that gave them the lead for good. Florida starter Josh Johnson allowed one more hit in the top of the second, and the Marlins staff didn't allow another the rest of the afternoon, but it wasn't enough as their lineup couldn't put together the offense to take the lead.

New York ace Johan Santana scattered 6 hits over his 7 1/3 innings of work, surrendering just one run on a Chris Coghlan single in the 8th.

"We were out there against one of the best in the game and it showed," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez. "[Johnson] was excellent but we needed to get the offense to back him up. We'll come back tomorrow with adjustments."

Re: Go Fish: A Florida Marlins Franchise (MLB 10)

Ouch, rough start to the season but Johan can be ridiculously tough to get hits against in this game. Hopefully your bats will heat up soon, I will definitely be following.

Re: Go Fish: A Florida Marlins Franchise (MLB 10)

Uggla provides firepower in Marlins win
Marlins 3, Mets 2

NEW YORK -- Dan Uggla blasted a 2-run home run in the 4th, and the Florida Marlins were able to hang on to the lead the rest of the way for their first victory of the season over the New York Mets.

Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco was solid in his 2010 debut, allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks and an earned run over 6 1/3 innings. For the Mets, John Maine picked up the loss after allowing 7 hits and 3 earned runs over 5 innings.

The Mets threatened in the late innings, jumping on Florida reliever José Veras, for an RBI double that was credited to Nolasco and a David Wright solo blast to start the 8th. Ryota Igarashi and Sean Green were both excellent for New York, allowing just one hit between them in 4 innings out of the bullpen. But Leo Nuñez came in and shut the door for the Fish in the 9th, picking up his first save of the season.

The game also featured the fifth career triple for Jorge Cantu, who hit a shot off the wall in left that took an odd bounce past outfielder Jason Bay and came in to score on Uggla's homer.

"It's been a few years since I picked one of those up," Cantu said with a smile. His last triple was in 2006 when he was with Tampa Bay. "I thought it was going out but I'll take the triple too."

Re: Go Fish: A Florida Marlins Franchise (MLB 10)

Mejia picks up win in major league debut
Mets 3, Marlins 1

NEW YORK -- New York starter Jenrry Mejia picked up the first win of his Mets career in his major league debut against the Florida Marlins.

Both teams continued to struggle offensively, playing the third straight low-scoring affair in the rubber match of the opening series, which ended with New York on top.

Mejia was very solid in his debut, however, allowing 5 hits and an earned run on 7 innings of work. He walked 3 but struck out 5, and in the 2nd he also tallied his first major leage hit and RBI, driving in Jeff Francoeur for the game's first run.

This day was more about frustration offensively for the Marlins, who were hitting the ball hard against Mejia and relievers, but couldn't seem to find gaps and mustered only 6 hits. Florida starter Anibal Sanchez picked up the quality start, giving up 3 earned runs over 6 innings, but it wasn't enough to pull out the victory.

"It was rough today because our guys felt like they were getting wood on pitches, but sometimes they just don't fall," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, whose team will have their home opener against the Dodgers on Friday in Miami. "I was happy with the approach at the plate for the most part, so the hits will come, no doubt."

Also hindering the offensive output for the Marlins were two costly baserunning errors by star shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who got on base three times and scored once, but was put out twice on mental errors.

"[Ramirez] just needs to stay focused," said Gonzalez. "He's pressing a little bit because he started a little slow, but now he just needs to find his rhythm out there."
