Balanced offensive attack gets Celtics win over defending Eastern Conference champs Bucks

by Edward Kincaid
October 30, 2019

BOSTON, MA -- There were a lot of changes to the Boston Celtics' roster over the offseason that left young and inexperienced players with larger roles. Veteran center Enes Kanter was signed in the offseason but has missed the first few games because of a knee injury. That left third-year center Daniel Theis with a much larger role for the Celtics. Wednesday night against the defending Eastern Conference champion Milwaukee Bucks, Theis showed how versatile he can be as a starter as he recorded a 14 point, 14 rebound double-double.

Milwaukee Bucks guard Goerge Hill fights over a couple of screens to get to Boston Celtics guard Kemba Walker.

Theis didn't just crash the boards in the Celtics 108-92 win over the Bucks. He also showed his ability to stretch the defense, going 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Theis was not the only player to have a good shooting night. As a team the Celtics shot 15-of-28 from 3-point range. Their barrage of 3-pointers came early as they shot 4-of-9 from deep in the first quarter. Theis' four made 3-pointers were the most on the team.

Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo was the only player on the team to produce throught the night.

The Bucks All-Star big man Giannis Antetokounmpo had a great game as well. While his game is more geared towards being around the basket, Antetokounmpo showed why he is so effective in that area of the court. Antetokounmpo finished with a game-high 29 points and 16 rebounds to go with three assists. He did struggle mightily at the free throw line, making one of his eight attempts.

Bucks guard Eric Bledsoe and forward Khris Middleton were a combined 8-of-25 from the field for 20 points.

Despite Antetokounmpo's strong play, the rest of the team did not put forth the same effort. All-Star forward Khris Middleton had a very pedestrian game, shooting 5-of-11 from the field for 12 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Outside of Middleton and Antetokounmpo, no other player on the Bucks reached double figures in scoring.

Celtics backup point guard Brad Wanamaker had a good night in limited minutes on the floor.

The Bucks performance on offense was almost the complete opposite of the Celtics where all of their starters scored 10 or more points. Point guard Kemba Walker and forward Jayson Tatum led the the Celtics with 20 points each. Backup point guard Brad Wanamaker made the most of his minutes by scoring 13 points in his 15 minutes played off the bench.

With the win the Celtics improve to 3-1 while the Bucks fall to 2-2 on the young season.

On the heels of a 51-point triple-double, Houston Rockets guard James Harden scores a career-high 64 points against the Washington Wizards. Harden did a lot of his damage at the free throw line where he set another record, making 23 of his 25 attempts. For comparison, the Wizards as a whole had 25 free throw attempts.

The Wizards did a decent job defending the perimeter as the Rockets only made 31 percent of their 3-point attempts. Even still, the Rockets scored 130 points on 53 percent shooting. The Wizards tried to match the Rockets scoring output with six of the formers players scoring in double figures.

ATLANTA, GA -- For the second time in as many games the Miami Heat emerged victorious against the Atlanta Hawks. Four-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler made his debut with the Heat and wasted no time making his mark as he notched a 30-point double-double. Butler was backed by center Kelly Olynyk who had another good game against the Hawks, finishing with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. While Olynyk did not have the same explosive game as he did the first time around it was enough to help the Heat in Thursday night's win.

A lackluster offense seemed to be the downfall of the Hawks for their second matchup against the Heat. While Atlanta did manage to build a 10-point lead in the second quarter, it was quickly lost in the third quarter where they were outscored 41-18. Atlanta's starters were a combined 15-of-45 from the field and 5-of-20 from 3-point range. That included an off night from second-year point guard Trae Young who missed all seven of his 3-point attempts.

LOS ANGELES, CA -- The San Antonio Spurs continue their subpar start to the season with a blowout loss to another struggling team, the Los Angeles Clippers. While DeMar DeRozan played well in this game, scoring 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, the Spurs did not have enough firepower on offense to compete with the Clippers. Swingman Marco Belinelli was having a fantastic game before his momentum was clipped with an ankle injury. Center LaMarcus Aldridge, who had been playing well offensively to start the season, struggled in the game as well. He went 3-for-10 for 13 points and had four turnovers.

The Clippers recover from their blowout loss to the Utah Jazz by blowing out the Spurs. Offensively, the Clippers were great as they shot 50 percent from beyond the arc and were 52 percent from the floor overall. The Clippers' offense was led by forward Kawhi Leonard's 30-point performance. Louis Williams also played well as he scored 24 points off the bench.
