Game Notes

Jacksonville finished last season 6-10 good for last place in the AFC South. They fired their head coach and offensive coordinator bringing in Jason Garret to right the ship. The Jags are 6-7 going into Week 15 and will miss the playoffs again if they do no win out. The Jags have wins over: SEA, HOU, IND, SD, NE, TEN and have lost to: HOU, SF, STL, TEN, AZ, BUF, IND. Jacksonville did not make an key signings and selected Jamaal Kidd with the #9 overall selection. Personally, I did not really understand the pick. The Jags already have Jimmy Smith, Keenan McCardell, and Justin Blackmon at WR.

Mark Brunell leads Jacksonville at QB. He has all the tools to be a great QB. He is athletic, has a strong accurate arm and great intangibles, however, he has struggled this year throwing only 11 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. Maurice Jones-Drew is a squatty, shifty running back. He has great power, vision, and speed. If he had more of a prototypical build he’d be considered among the elite running backs. The Jags have 5 quality receivers which seems to be a bit overkill. Jimmy Smith and Justin Blackmon have procured the starting jobs with McCardell, Shorts, and rookie Jamaal Kidd sharing time in the slot. None of Jacksonville’s receivers have great speed or size, but all have excellent hands and route running ability. Tony Boselli and Luke Joeckel give Jacksonville a set of excellent tackles on the line.

The Jags can be an intimidating defense mixing speed and power on the line. Groves and Harvey have top line speed and acceleration on the outside while Stroud and Henderson are large and in charge inside. Kiwanuka, Peterson, and Hardy are excellent against the run although can be exposed when matched up against a back of slot receiver. In the secondary Rashean Mathis is one of the best corners in the game and Brent Grimes provides elite man coverage skills. Deon Grant and Donovan Darius are a solid duo at safety.

This is a home game and a game we should win. A win would all but assure us a place in the playoffs as 2 of the 3 teams a game behind are matched up against one another this week.

Jags win the toss

Scoreless first quarter.

Brunell throws pick inside 20, Harris showed great hands in nickel coverage.

Rambis got jealous and threw a pick 2 plays later.

Neither Offense has looked good, Jags kick 45 yard field goal after 3 and out off INT.

Terrible first half for our offense, we haven’t be able to get anything going at all.

3rd quarter was scoreless too. They’ve really done a good job stopping the run and putting pressure on the QB. Rambis is at ~ 50% completion percentage and Sweetney averaged less than a yard per carry on his first 8 attempts.

First play of the 4th quarter - 4th and 1 down 3 at JAX 33, easy decision to go for it. Our defense has been solid, it is in less than 50 – 50 territory for a FG, and a punt would go directly into the end zone netting 13 yards.

I call Maryland I HB Blast, Sweetney squeezes through the line and picks up 10.

Rambis finds Owens on a pivot out pattern for the 12 yard TD.

4th and 2 from our own 41 with only 7:12 remaining. I’m an aggressive coach and if we make this the game could essentially be over. I call Maryland I sweep right. Sweentey finds just enough blocking on the outside to pick up 3.

We get stuffed on the next set of plays, 4th and 8 from JAX 43 I have to punt with 3:15 remaining. Malone pins them at the 2!

Jones-Drew breaks a Thomas tackle attempt in the end zone on second down avoiding a safety, but Harris gets sack on 3rd down forcing punt.

3rd and 1 from JAC 28 with only 1:57 remaining Sweetney gains 10 on a dive all but assuring victory.

Another first down and the game is over.

An ugly win overall. Our offense looked awful, but so did the Jaguars. This was by far the worst I’ve seen 2 offenses play during my entire time playing head coach.

Sweetney went from 8 carries for 7 yards with about 2 minutes left in the 3rd to 27 for 112.

We had great pressure with 4 sacks, held Brunell under 50% and limited Jones-Drew to 3 yards on 16 attempts.

Kevin Hardy was a beast recording 4 sacks off of blitzes.

At 9-5 we are pretty much a lock for the playoffs.

Game Notes

Houston finished last year with a 7-9 record, Alex Gibbs left as the OC, they added Tim Bowens as a perfect fit in their 3-4 defense, and made 2 selections in the first round with Derrick Conroy and Antoine Jefferson. I forced the issue and had traded for Matt Schaub so Conroy could start. After seeing the early results I realized Conroy will never be successful, Schaub returned to Houston and everything went back the way it should be. The Texans have wins against: JAC, HOU, AZ, NE, SF, SEA and have lost to IND (X2), JAC, PIT, DEN, STL, TEN, MIA

Head Coach Gary Kubiak runs the Shanahan Zone blocking system. Houston starts Schaub at QB who has above average intangibles and athletic ability. He lacks the arm strength to be an elite QB and his accuracy is average for a starting QB. Arian Foster is one of the best running backs in all the game. He is a workhorse and can do it all. He is smart, fast, strong and has great vision and hands. He is everything you look for in a running back. Andre Johnson is an elite WR. He has excellent size, ball skills, and athletic ability. Houston has a so so second option in Lee Evans and Ben Obanmonu is more suited for special teams than the slot. Houston has 2 great tackles in Brown and Searcy and a great center in Chris Meyers.

The Texans runs a 3-4 defense with Wade Phillips at the helm. Phillips is one of the best coordinators in the game and has one of the most talented lines in the game. Mario Williams is a physical specimen with a great blend of size, speed, and strength. Williams has 10 sacks already this year. On the other side of the line is JJ Watt. The former Wisconsin Badger is the perfect 3-4 defensive end. He can disrupt the passer by swatting down passes, stuff the run, and will get his fair share of sacks too. Tim Bowens rounds out the line with excellent intangibles as a DT. The Texans linebackers aren’t as scary but can cause issues when blitzing. Brian Cushing is a great edge rusher and DeMeo Ryans is a tackling machine inside. Jonathan Joseph and Dunta Robinson are strong corners best suited for man coverage. Rookie Antoine Jefferson has the chance to become an elite FS with his coverage skills and speed while Eugene Wilson is one of the best coverage safeties in all the game.
Texans win the toss

Our drive stalls at the 19. Folk makes FG from 36 yards.

Thomas is so good in coverage, picks Schaub in deep crossing route from the slot.

4th and 2 form HOU, Sweetney grabs 4 yards for the first down.

A few plays later Sweetney carries it in for a 7 yard TD.

Texans have an efficient drive capped off with 2 yard Foster TD.

Sweetney fumbled at HOU 33 with less than 2 minutes left.

We stopped the Texans and gained control of the ball with less than 50 seconds left at our own 17. Sweetney sat out as I was just planning on running out the clock. Hillis took an inside run 83 yards for a surprising TD.

A more shocking play was Andre Johnson taking the ensuing kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown.

Sweetney fumbled again, Houston recovered and we were called for a 15 yard facemask penalty giving the Texans the ball at our 21 yard line. After a 14 yard completion, Bullock makes a 34 yard field goal.

We respond in the first drive of the second half with a 71 yard 5 minute drive. Sweetney scored on a pitch right from 1 yard out.

Texans respond with a great drive of their own. Foster leaps over Verner for a 7 yard TD set up by a 31 yard pass from Schaub to Johnson.

First play after the kick return, Rambis launches a bomb to Floyd who breaks 2 tackles and scores from 53 out.

Bullock misses 48 yard attempt after Schaub got Texans into position after consecutive passes for 31 and 20.

Sweetney takes the next play 62 yards for a TD.

4th and 2 from our 18 down 14 with only 4:55 left Houston attempts dive and Foster is caught for no gain.

Verner makes a nice grab of Schaub in 2 minute last effort from Texans.

This game never felt in doubt to me. We were able to run it down their throats and Rambis avoided mistakes.

There were a lot of big plays in this game. It actually reminded me a little bit of last year where gameplay was almost plagued with too many long TDs.

Gholston was a monster, 16 tackles and 2 sacks. Teams have really struggled to run against us and I may have to tune up the Running ability for the CPU after the year is over.

Game Notes

Last year the Pats lost in the conference championship by one point. This year they are sitting at 3-12 including a 6 game losing streak heading into our matchup. The horrible record is shocking. The only change from last year’s team is replacing Adalius Thomas with Julian Peterson (out for this game). While it is a slight step down it is more likely to explain 8 points over the course of a season instead of 8 wins. The Pats have lost every close game they have been in and despite the record they have a point differential of -15 for the season. Looking at their stats Brady has had a trying season with 24 TDs compared to 29 INTs. New England will be locked in with the number 2 pick.

This is a very important matchup. Not only have we never beat the Patriots, but they crushed us earlier in the year 57-7. In fact, in our 3 previous matchups the Pats have won by a combined score of 150-36! Buffalo lost last week and is now 11-4. If they lose to Houston, Miami wins against Atlanta, and we pull off a victory here there’d be a 3 way tie for 1st in the AFC East.

Jets win the toss

Rambis finds TO wide open off of playaction on a streak pattern for a 61 yard TD in first drive of the game.

Gostkowski makes from 47 out.

Rambis has been a monster early on 8/11 for 169 yards, an 84 yard drive ends with a Sweetney 10 yard run for the TD.

Rambis is really on today. He found Floyd deep and wide open after evading some pressure in the pocket. 87 yard TD.

Jolly fumbled at NE 16. We were looking unstoppable in the passing game. A score would have just about clinched the game. New England has struggled to convert 3rd downs so far.

Gholston picks Brady 3 plays later and we take over at the NE 46.

Folk makes 46 yard field goal after our drive stalls.

From NYJ 34 NE attempts a 4th and 2. Welker drops the pass. This has been the Patriots issue all game and I would have to assume all season. Dropped passes and struggles to convert on 3rd down. Ridley is the worst starting RB in the league in this roster set and they have no deep threats. I hope they address both issues in the off-season because the game is a lot better when they are elite.

Up 21 I am going to be running on first and second down the rest of the way.

Sweetney fumbled and Bruschi took it back 62 yards for a TD. Game not set yet.

Sweetney fumbles a 3rd time, luckily we have recovered 2/3.

Sweetney ends a14 play drive with a 4 yard touchdown with under 2 minutes to play. I never thought we’d dominate New England like this.

I feel bad for Brady as there were 7 drops and he was sacked on the final play of his season.

Rambis was amazing, 16/23, 364 yards with a 141 QB rating. This was by far his best game of the season.

Now to main screen to see if the Texans helped us out and … They did not. Buffalo wins the divison and we’ll be playing in a wild card game with a 6 game winning streak. Our opponent will be the AFC West Champion Denver Broncos.

At the beginning of the year I had expected this team to win between 7 and 9 games. We started off the season 5-5 and had games against the Colts and Patriots up-coming. At that point of the season a 7 or 8 win campaign seemed realistic and would have been right on path with my overarching growth goals for the team.

Something clicked at that point and the games were becoming easier. We are a year to a 2 years ahead of my overall plan for the team and it is something I will address in the off-season.

Rambis had about the year I expected from him. His completion percentage and TD:INT ratio were a little worse than I expected, but he really came on strong towards the end of the season completing 60% of his passes and having an 11:5 TD to INT ratio in the final 8 games of the season. We went from passing for a total of 2700 yards last year to just over 4000 quite an improvement.

Sweetney was better than imagined he could have been. He really needs to cut down on fumbles and I need to find a back i feel comfortable with sharing a little more of the load.

Floyd had a better season than I expected, although in the 2 super simmed games he averaged 174 yards per game while averaging just under 60 in all played games.

Stephen Hill didn't grow as much as I would have liked considering how well he played at the end of last season, but he did cut down on drops.

TO was a disappointment, although that is more due to how the game treats #1 WRs vs how they treat the slot guys. Still under 50% completion rate isn't what I want out of one of the best players in the league.

Jolly will never be an elite player, but he is improving. His yardage slipped from last year, but he cut drops down from 17 to 10 and even though I didn't keep the target stats from last year I know we threw to him significantly less this year meaning he is becoming more efficient.

The OLINE improved from last year, although the sack numbers are a bit misleading as in reality Rambis was sacked 36 times during the season. I would really like to improve the right side of the line in the off-season.

My defense started to improve last year when I decided Coples and Gholston couldn't be paired together. One needed to be a rush linebacker and the other a 2 way DE. When combined at the same spot they were too poor coverage and not stout enough against the run. The momenteum carried into this year and our D improved even more. Thomas as the MLB is the defensive MVP. He flys to the ball and after Urlacher is the best linebacker in coverage.

Overall I was happy with the DLINE play. Richardson slipped from 8 sacks to 3 and was a little disappointing, but everyone else had a solid season. Coples may even earn a pro bowl nod.

Our LB crew played well because they all have defined roles. Gholston can rush the passer and fill a gap, Harris is versatile offering a little bit of everything, and Thomas is the key to our Nickel and Dime packages.

One of easiest ways to notice an improved defense is to look at the number of tackles your secondary is making. Last year Rhodes and Landry combined for 214 tackles and we were able to cut that down to just under 150. Both are likely headed back to the Pro Bowl, although only Rhodes is really deserving. Revis had a better year although you wouldn't think that with his INTs cut in half from last. Verner is a solid #2CB and showed off good hands with 6 picks.

Really not many surprises amongst the league leaders. Brady had an off year, but other than that all QBs had typical stats. With Hammermill my DC instead of a HC no one is running a crazy 95% pass offense. Overall the average yard per carry around the year is up which is a positive sign as it was lower than I wanted last year. Small backs continue to disappoint. Barry Sanders and Marshall Faulk have been disappointments and can barely crack the 3 YPC barrier. Jerry Rice only gained 1147 yards which is a minor let down, but SF had 3 1000 yard receivers + 700 yards from Vernon Davis.

Rookies of note:

Rambis was the only QB to play consistently. Conroy started a couple of games for Houston as mentioned in an earlier game.

Sweetney led the league in yards, yards per carry, and rushing TDs. Kendrick House missed a majority of the year with an injury. Sweetney was the only rookie RB to receive more than 50 carries.

Tyrus Duhon had a great year for Miami. The #3 overall pick caught 63 passes for 1265 yards and 6 TDs. No other rookie WR or TE was top 4 on their team in catches.

A couple things to note here the interception numbers are pretty high and the sack numbers are pretty low. I always saw this when playing a franchise but it never really registered until I started recording the stats. My take is that QBs never know when to take a sack or throw the ball away. The hurry numbers really seem to indicate this as hurries aren’t being converted over to sacks easily. What this causes is an excess number of INTs throw in the game due to poor footwork when throwing. Not listed on the leaders for Hurries was Warren Sapp who had 88. This means Tampa had basically 3 of the top 5 leaders for hurries and 2 of them play DT.

Brian Urlacher had a monter year nearly leading in tackels and INTs.

Rookies of Note:

Martin McPeak had a big year for the Redskins with 94 tackles.

Andre Dalembert only had 3 sacks for San Diego, but they play a 3-4, Thaddeus Cheeks seems to be doing all right as a run stuffer in AZ.

Antoine Jefferson and Ryan Spradlin had solid seasons at FS.

What stands out to me is the Patriots record. The AFC EAST was dominant this year. Teams that run too much don’t score and the Cowboys and Chargers are prime examples. I could see any of the division winners from the NFC making it to the Super Bowl. In the AFC I think it will come down to Bills vs Colts.
