"I heard you was trying out for varsity football next year." Said Romello who caught up to me as I walked solo towards the cafeteria. I'm not sure but I think Romello was on the JV team last season as a sophomore.

"Yeah coach Hill told me I could consider it. Who you hear it from?"

"I just heard about it... What position you gonna play." Said Romello.

"Hill says quarterback."

"Yeah second string quarterback."

"No,? why second string?"

"Look here Mike, I'm starting quarterback next season and I'm not letting you take that from me either." Said Romello as he grew angry, "You better just stick with with basketball."

"Man why so harsh, just trying to have fun, it's just high school athletics." I said carefree.

"Football is more than just a "school athletic" it's my life. I'm here to start my legacy not to simply have fun. This was the 2nd season I've had to wait to get playing time of varsity and I'm not letting a novice take it."

"Well uhh... We'll let coach Hill make that decision. May the best man win Romello. I'm not intending to steal your position but I'm also not going to intentionally allow you to keep me on the bench all season.

"Man whatever. Like you said, may the best man win." Romello walked away.

Competition, competition... Every since the little league baseball, basketball, and everything I'd played, there'd always be that kid who played my position and was supposedly better at it than I was.
I was tired of being that 2nd option guy and right then and there I had finally realized that only hard work would make me the best and who I wanted to become.
