Sounds about right. I usually distribute the majority of carries between my RB1 and my QB evenly (about 10-20 apiece). My RB2 may get 5-10 carries and my FB may get 5 carries. Of course Texas holds us to low rushing yards. I'll expect more when we play lowly C-USA teams.

Good luck w/ Navy, BTW.

Looks like I had a hard few opening games at CMU. Oklahoma State and now Michigan State? Dang.

How'd you fair against Navy? Hopefully you kept it close if nothing else

You never know with stats when it comes to the CPU in this game. Though I doubt we'll see stats like that again, for sure. 13-9 seems highly unlikely for some reason.

CMU has always fed off of major conference teams, unfortunately. As long as you are there, expect it.

And I can't reveal that haha. That'd be cheating.

It's a Shallow Grave..

UConn drilled by Navy...again

It's always something against these guys. It seems like whenever we're going on O, our defense sucks. When their defense stuffs us, we can never recover and don't score on offense.

Newsflash! That doesn't win you ballgames.

UConn, playing in the big rematch against Navy, fell flat once again. The defense played OK, but it was the offense that laid an egg.

Bryant Shirreffs, asked to throw a little more than last week at Bowling Green, launched 5 INT's, and appeared to be all over the place throwing the ball. On top of that, when Shireffs went down hurt, Tim Boyle threw 3 INT's in 3 throws. For my mental sake, I have left him out of our box score.

The run game was OK, but Josh Marriner went down hurt and exited stage left in the 3rd after only 9 carries and 79 yards. Ron Johnson did a solid job in relief, adding 67 yards.

Fortunately for UConn, it wasn't until the late 3rd when it completely erupted for UConn. Navy did run all over the Huskies, but didn't have many points to show for it. They had to settle for 3 field goals, and surprisingly only had 1 rush TD in the first half, and it was still a very manageable 13-7 game at the half.

UConn went 3 and out right after the half, but Navy got straight to work, as fullback Al Smith broke off runs of 23 and 10, and Luke Williamson pounded in a score for Navy to make it 20-7 in a really quick drive.

With 5 minutes still on the clock in the 3rd, UConn didn't need to hurry, but a score would've helped immensely.

With Marriner out of the game at this point, Johnson got runs of 6 and 10, followed by a Shirreffs scramble of 11. UConn kept chopping away yards, and got a 13 yard catch from Noel Thomas to get into the red zone. Arkeel Newsome, in as the scatback, got the TD two plays later, and we had a ball game once again.

Navy converted a few 3rd downs on their next drive, and had to settle for a Sloan Fields field goal, and UConn went into the 4th only facing a 23-14 deficit.

Unfortunately, it started to unravel.

After converting a 4th and short in Navy territory on the ensuing drive, Shirreffs went to scramble, got decked, lost the ball, and Anthony Mason scooped and scored to give Navy a 2 score lead (they missed the 2 point conversion, 29-14 game).

UConn lost Thomas Lucas for the game with an injury on the next play, and Shirreffs threw an INT. UConn started to force passes, and you can see where I'm going with this.

UConn falls to 1-1, and 0-4 against the option under Bob Diaco. Tago Smith didn't torch UConn per se, but did gain 107 yards on the ground, never a great thing.

So, let's brush this one way and move on to Virginia. Much better use of our time frankly. Hopefully we don't lose Marriner again. Or else someone with a messed up name like Tago Smith may beat us again.

See you back at the Rent.

I thought you were a UConn fan. Haha. Just kidding. You can count on Navy shelling us at this point. I don't know what to do to stop them. Every time I can hold them on offense, our offense sucks. In addition, Navy plays rough. They hit hard, have gotten a fair share of my players hurt, they're just tough to play against.

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

Masters of the Rent

UConn wins defensive battle without Shirreffs

It must just be Navy.

UConn, with a really strange 25-13 win over now 2-1 Virginia in the Rent (where else), move to 2-1 headed into the rest of the opening leg of AAC play.

What a strange win it was.

It started early, when Bryant Shirreffs went down awkwardly after being tackled on a scramble. He was helped to the locker room and didn't return. Fortunately, he will be back for Tulsa next week.

Enter Tim Boyle, who never seems to go away.

The senior, benched at the start of last season and performed underwhelmingly in limited action last year, got the nod in Shirreffs' place. And he wasn't terrible. He didn't throw a TD (he didn't need to), and he didn't throw an INT either.

That's likely because the offensive workload went to Josh Marriner, who didn't seem to be feeling any lingering effects from his injury in the Navy game last week.

The junior held the rock 30 times, and gained 136 yards and 2 scores in a beautiful performance.

However, none of that came early.

In fact, UConn, thanks in part to Jhavon Williams picking off passes on each of the Cavaliers' first two drives, put up 3 Bobby Puyol field goals in the opening stanza without gaining much of anything offensively.

But after that, it's not like the lead grew or anything. The halftime score was 12-10 UConn. The score after the 3rd frame was 13-12 Virginia.

What is this? Are we playing high school baseball or something?

The key to the excruciatingly low scoring first 3 quarters was the constant pressure both sides got on each other, especially for Virginia. Max Valles and Kelvin Rainey were haunting Boyle, and same went for Matt Johns, courtesy of All-American Cameron Stapleton.

From this guy's point of view, the Rent's rocking crowd played an effect on Virginia as well. (But if it had messed with the Cavs, it clearly messed with UConn's offense too.)

Fortunately, the Boyle led Huskies figured it out. UVA's Johns went 1-6 on his first two drives of the 4th, and Virginia's offense continued to flounder.

On the ensuing UConn drive, the Huskies got 3 big catches from Damon Mitchell, and pushed the Huskies inside the 30. Marriner punctuated the drive with 3 straight bruising runs, the last being a 1 yard TD to give UConn an 18-13 lead (failed the 2 point try).

Williams swatted another Johns pass on UVA's next drive, and helped lock up another 3 and out, which left Virginia running out of time.

It didn't help that Boyle scrambled for 15 yards, and Marriner's runs of 11 and 10 helped UConn cross midfield. After a Noel Thomas 22 yard catch, Marriner would once again dive in the end zone for UConn, and ended up giving UConn a 25-13 lead with 3 minutes left.

Trying in vain to get a score, Taquan Mizzell (the great Cavs tailback who inexplicably only got 4 carries) went backward a yard and Johns was sacked, forcing a punt.

Marriner ran for 34 yards on the final drive, and Ron Johnson finished with a 15 yard run to end it.

It took a while, but UConn got it together, got the run game going and got the W. With Shirreffs back next week, there may be a little more throwing, but with the way he has been playing early this year, I would count on Marriner getting a bunch more carries against Tulsa.

UConn is now up to 2-1, and faces the aforementioned Golden Hurricane in the Rent next week. Can they improve to 2-0 at the Rent next week? Tune in to find out.
