CATHEDRAL COMES UP SHORT AT IDAHO
Nov 8, 2014MOSCOW, Idaho — Cathedral dropped its seventh straight game of the season Saturday evening, falling in a 40-24 decision against Idaho at the Kibbie Dome.
How It Happened: Idaho hung 26 first half points on the Spartans, who until the final minute, posted only a field goal in defense. Hayden Cromer gave Cathedral a much needed boost with a 75-yard catch and run touchdown pass from Zachary Latimer with 0:59 left in the half.
The Vandals added another seven points to their lead in the third quarter when Isaac Craig had his second punt of the day blocked, this one recovered inside the end zone by Idaho's Stefon Diggs. Idaho scored again early in the third quarter before Cathedral closed the game with two touchdowns, first on a 12-yard run from Myles Brady followed by a 64-yard pass connection from backup quarterback Amir Thomas to Heath Young with 2:19 remaining in the contest.
Who Stood Out: Cromer caught three passes for 126 yards, recording his first collegiate game with over 100 yards receiving. Casey Leuck rushed 10 times for 73 yards, averaging 7.3 per carry. Defensively, freshman safety Chianti Young led the Spartans with 12 tackles, a career-high, while junior newcomer Jerrel Shaw recorded seven tackles in place for Kory Pearson, who left the game in the second quarter.
What It Means: Cathedral's losing streak spans to seven straight loses as the season winds down.
Notable: Latimer threw his first touchdown pass since week six (Oct. 4) against Washington. Amir Thomas's touchdown pass was his career first ... Junior Demarcus Little made his second start of the season at wide receiver ... Isaac Craig, who entered the game with three of his punts blocked, had two more added to the total against Idaho (leads nation). Craig's first blocked punt resulted in a safety, the second in a touchdown ... Tanner Burnett missed a 43-yard field goal in first quarter ... Idaho lost running back Alton Ruffin (elbow) in the second quarter, and quarterback Khalid Armstrong (ribs) in the fourth. Neither player returned.
Up Next: Cathedral returns home to host UL Lafayette at Father Dalmoro Stadium.
Five blocked punts later, Cathedral finally plans on making changes on special teams, according to coach George Pasey. "It's something that should've been addressed earlier in the season. It's unacceptable, and Saturday really showed that." Senior punter Isaac Craig had two punts blocked against Idaho - both which resulted in Idaho points - and has a nation-leading five to his name. PEARSON TO MISS TIME WITH BROKEN RIB
Cathedral's disaster of a season just got worse. The Spartans' hard-hitting strong safety Kory Pearson has a broken rib and is expected to miss four to six weeks, according to head coach George Pasey. With only four games remaining on the schedule, the sophomore's timetable could potentially sideline him for the remainder of the season. Pearson — brother of former UC running back Tory Pearson — has recorded 41 tackles this season along with an interception and two passes defended.

SPARTANS BLOW FOURTH QUARTER LEAD IN LOSS TO SOUTH ALABAMA
Nov 22, 2014MOBILE, Ala. — Cathedral blew a 26-7 fourth quarter lead Saturday night, falling on the wrong side of an instant classic in a 29-26 defeat against South Alabama at Ladd–Peebles Stadium.
How It Happened: Cathedral's offense rode on the coattail of a great defensive performance that held the Jaguars to just a single score entering the fourth quarter. Leading at 13-7, the Spartans extended the margin midway through the quarter with a three-yard touchdown run by Casey Leuck. A blocked punt by Jamel Copeland on South Alabama's ensuing possession resulted in another Leuck touchdown two plays later with 3:20 remaining in regulation. That is when the meltdown began.
The Jaguars scored their first of 21 points in a two minute span on a 22-yard pass from Brett Sheehan to Caleb Alves. South Alabama proceeded to recover an onside kick which was converted into another seven points four players later when T.J. Glover recovered a tipped pass by Cathedral defensive back Marquis Randall. Glover took the ball in untouched for a 49-yard touchdown reception, making the game 26-22 with 1:52 remaining.
Cathedral recovered the second onside attempt, but a stalled drive resulted in a three-and-out and a punt by Isaac Craig which landed the Jaguars at the 15 yard line. Sheehan moved the ball for 70 yards on his first three attempts, setting up a 10-yard go-ahead touchdown run by Kendall Houston. A followup two-point conversion run put the Jaguars ahead 29-26.
The Spartans' two separate comeback bids each failed, culminating only in an 18-yard reception by freshman wide receiver Hayden Cromer in seven total pass attempts.
Who Stood Out: Leuck had the game of his career, rushing for three touchdowns and 158 yards on 32 carries, all career-highs. On defense, interceptions were recorded by both Justin Larkin and Nigel Rivera, who also paced the team with nine tackles. Outside linebacker Jamel Copeland forced two fumbles, including a blocked punt, on top of three tackles, one for a loss.
What It Means: Cathedral gets only two more shots at a 2014 conference win with upcoming matches against Western Kentucky (7-2) and Troy (4-5).
Notable:Romeo Zeke Leonard make his first start of the season at defensive tackle. Leonard finished with a four tackles and sack along with defensive end Brook Douglas ... Sophomore free safety Marquis Randall also made his first start of the season; playing at cornerback ... Casey Leuck surpassed 1,000 career rushing yards, making him only the fourth player in school history to do so ... Leuck (abdominal) left the game late in the fourth quarter, missing the offenses' final two drives.
Up Next: Cathedral returns home to host Western Kentucky on Saturday.
JAMISON TO MISS WESTERN KENTUCKY GAME WITH CONCUSSION
Spartans' outside linebacker Terrel Jamison suffered a concussion against South Alabama this past Saturday, and he will miss the Spartans' next game against Western Kentucky. "He's doing much better," Cathedral head coach George Pasey said. "If it was up to him, he'd play next week, but that's not up to him." Pasey stated that sophomore Edward Pierre, a listed middle linebacker, will start in Jamison's place this Saturday.
