Re: #TitanUp | A Tennessee Titans Franchise (M20)

2020 | Week 1 | Jets Recap

A.J Brown.jpg
Titans' 2nd year wideout, A.J. Brown, makes a fantastic leaping grab over Jets' FS Curtis Riley

A new chapter began tonight for the Titans' franchise.

This was the first game for new Head Coach Jeffery Benn, all the rookies that were drafted (most notably, QB Jalen Hurts), and their huge free agent acquisitions.

The Titans had a ton of hype coming into their Week 1 game against the Jets. In ESPN's Power Rankings, they had the Titans ranked as the 2nd best team in the AFC. This is just one year after having a 4-12 record and the 3rd pick in the NFL Draft.

Would the Titans live up to the hype?

On their first drive of the game, the Spread offense was in full affect. The first play under new Head Coach Jeffery Benn was an RPO that ended up in a 15 yard gain as Jalen Hurts hit fellow rookie WR Jerry Jeudy one the slant. Hurts had a magnificent drive as he methodically picked apart the Jets defense. And after a 12 play drive, the Titans scored on their first possession under Jeffery Benn, all while having a rookie QB at the helm. The TD was an 11 yard pass to Jerry Jeudy made made a great grab in the right corner of the endzone on the comeback route.

After the two teams traded punts, the Titans tacked onto their early lead thanks to a 38 yard FG by new kicker, Greg Zuerlein.

Heading into the 2nd Quarter, the Titans held a 10-0 lead.

On 2nd play of the 2nd Quarter, Darnold stepped up in the pocket and tried to deliver the ball to Jamison Crowder on the slant. But Tennessee MLB Rashaan Evans jumped the route, intercepted the ball, and set the Titans offense up with solid field position.

And on the first play of their ensuing possession Kareem Hunt took the handoff, darted up the middle, cut to towards the sideline and was gone for the 57 yard TD run. The play was HB Dive out of the Pistol formation. The offensive line made some great blocks along with blocking TE, Joshua Perkins. It just happened to be the perfect play call against the Jets' defense play.

The Titans now held a commanding 17-0 lead early in the 2nd Quarter.

However, the Jets would respond almost immediately on a long TD run of their own. Tennessee brought pressure from the right side of their defense, which made them be out of position... And the Jets' run play took advantage of that. Bell had a huge hole and absolutely no one on the left side of the field. Bell darted, untouched, for the 64 yard TD. Tennessee still had a 2 possession lead, as the score was 17-7.

The two teams traded punts over the next 4 minutes of the Quarter. Then, the fans were treated to quite possibly, the most exciting minute of football you'll see all year.

Jalen Hurts finally drove the Titans down the field, and their drive was capped off on a Corey Davis TD catch off of a perfectly run slant route. The play covered 9 yards and extended Tennessee's lead to 24-7 with 1:11 left in the half.

After a 32 yard catch and run by TE Chris Herndon. Then, with just 28 seconds left in the half, Darnold threw a bomb to speedy WR, Robby Anderson. Anderson caught the ball in stride and scored with ease on the 49 yard TD. And with just 19 seconds left in the half, Tennessee's lead was cut to 24-14.

Ryan Succop's kickoff sailed into the endzone for the touchback. And on the first play of Tennessee's drive, they didn't kneel the ball. They handed the ball off to Kareem Hunt. Hunt took the handoff running toward the right sideline. He then juked Jamal Adams and was gone for the 75 yard TD run.

It was an incredibly exciting minute of football and Tennessee would now take a 31-14 lead into halftime.

The Jets scored almost immediately after halftime. On a 3rd and 2 play, Sam Darnold found Quincy Enunwa behind the Titans defense. Enunwa ran a perfect post route, broke Kevin Byard's would be tackle, and was gone for the 52 yard TD. Tennessee now held a 31-21 lead.

However, that's the closest the score would get for the rest of the game. Because the Titans' would score on their ensuing possession. However, that TD would have never happened without an incredible play from Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown. It was 3rd and 17. The Titans ran out a 4 wide set. Brown ran a vertical route and got behind Jets FS Curtis Riley. Jalen Hurts wound up and threw a 45 yard bomb to Brown who made a spectacular leaping catch.

3 plays later the Titans found the endzone on a 16 yard 'catch' by Cordarrelle Patterson. Patterson was sent in motion on the Jet Touch Pass, caught the ball in stride, and thanks to fantastic outside blocking, ran 16 yards untouched for the score. That was Hurts' 3rd TD pass of the game and was the last TD scored by either team in this game.

In the 4th Quarter, each team had a field goal a piece. So, the Titans would go on to win their first game of the Jeffery Benn/Jalen Hurts era in convincing, 41-24 fashion.

Re: #TitanUp | A Tennessee Titans Franchise (M20)

2020 | Week 2 | Jaguars Recap

Eric Berry INT.jpg
Eric Berry made this fantastic leaping interception which he would go on to return 30 yards for his first pick six in a Titans uniform

On Monday following the win vs. the Jets, we traded UDFA HB Cade Carney to the Tampa Bay Bucs for HB Ronald Jones. Jones is more of a fit in the Titans spread offense, where they value speed over pure power runners, like Carney.

Fast forward to Thursday and the Titans have their second game in the span of 5 days. This time, the Titans took on division rival, Jacksonville at home on Thursday Night Football.

Before the first score of the game, a huge development occurred. On the Jaguars' first drive, Leonard Fournette went down with a mild concussion. He wouldn't return to the game. So the Jaguars had to rely on Donnel Pumphrey Jr. as their primary running back for the remainder of the game.

Now, the Titans finally got on the board over 4 minutes into the 1st Quarter as Kareem Hunt plunged 1 yard up the middle for the tough TD. This gave the Titans the early 7-0 lead.

On the 1st play of the Jaguars ensuing possession, Nick Foles dropped back to pass and attempted to lead TE Josh Oliver with the pass. However, he threw the ball too far in front of him and Eric Berry made a fantastic leaping INT. Berry then ran the ball back 30 yards for the pick six. Berry is known for that from his days at Tennessee. And the crowd went absolutely nuts when Berry crossed the goal line tonight. Berry's huge pick put the Titans up 13-0 as Greg Zuerlein missed the PAT.

However, the Jaguars bounced back on their following possession by putting up their first points of the game. These points came on a 32 yard FG from rookie Kicker, Rodrigo Blankenship.

Heading into the 2nd Quarter, Tennessee held a 13-3 lead.

After punts by both teams, the Titans finally got on the board with 3:21 left in the 2nd Quarter thanks to a long 56 yard FG by Greg Zuerlein that barely made it over the crossbar. This increased Tennessee's lead to 16-3.

Then on Jacksonville's ensuing possession, Foles found Marqise Lee on the first play of the drive for a 5 yard pitch and catch. On the 2nd and 5 play, the Titans sent an all-out blitz. Well, Donnel Pumphrey found a hole in the Offensive Line and was gone for the 70 yard TD run. This TD put the Jaguars right back in the game as the score was now 16-10 Tennessee.

After a quick 3 and out from the Titans, the Jaguars marched right down the field and took their first lead of the game with 1:35 left in the half. This time, Foles lead a brilliant drive and capped it off with a 3 yard pass to TE Virgil Green on the out route. Jacksonville now lead 17-16.

However, Jalen Hurts responded by leading the Titans down the field and with just 7 seconds left in the half, Tennessee attempted one final play before they planned on kicking a field goal. They were on the 2 yard line and had 1 timeout left. They wouldn't need it though. Jalen Hurts found A.J. Brown on the drag route over the middle of the field. Brown made a nice, contested catch and the clock stopped with just 2 seconds left in the half. Zuerlein converted the PAT and Tennessee would bring a 23-17 lead into the locker rooms.

The Titans scored quickly to start the 3rd Quarter. Jalen Hurts led the Titans on another fantastic drive and capped it off with a 3 yard pass to Corey Davis. Davis ran a slant route and Hurts threw the ball at the perfect time to not only fit the ball in between two Jaguar defenders, but also hit Davis in the back of the endzone. Tennessee had now increased their lead to a comfortable 30-17.

However, Jacksonville responded with a TD of their own. Almost exactly 4 minutes later, Nick Foles hit Marqise Lee on a slant route of their own for the 2 yard TD. Tennessee's lead was cut down to 30-24 as we enter the 4th Quarter.

After each team struggled to gain much traction on offense during the 4th Quarter, the Titans finally put a drive together. However, on a 3rd and 3 play, the Titans were planning on running the ball towards the middle of the field to set Zuerlein up with field goal attempt where he'd be in the middle of the field. However, Kareem Hunt was drilled in the backfield and fumbled the ball. Jacksonville MLB, Myles Jack, scooped up the ball and took off for the 72 yard scoop and score. Jacksonville took the late 31-30 lead with just 2:59 left in the game.

So now all the pressure was on rookie Jalen Hurts. Could he lead the Titans on a late comeback, in his 2nd game in the NFL, against one of the NFL's top defenses?

The Titans methodically were driving down the field. Then, they dialed up a deep ball. On 2nd and 7, Hurts dropped back to pass while Corey Davis managed to get a rare step on Jalen Ramsey. Hurts dropped a dime in to Davis and Davis made a spectacular 1 handed catch while falling to the ground. The play covered 42 yards and set the Titans up in field goal range with 1:02 left in the game.

So, now the Titans pounded the rock with Kareem Hunt. On 3rd and 2, Kareem Hunt broke a tackle and broke off a 22 yard run which set the Titans up on the 7 yard line. It was now 1st and Goal with 42 seconds left... And the Titans had all 3 timeouts, while the Jaguars had used all of theirs up.

On 3rd and goal from the 4, the Titans ran the ball one final time. It was a gutsy call based on what happened last time, however, they really wanted to set Zuerlein up with an easy field goal due to his PAT miss earlier in the game. However, the Titans' O-Line made a crease for Hunt, he slid through, and then scored on the 4 yard TD run with just 14 seconds left. Tennessee held the 37-31 lead and just needed to keep the Jaguars out of the endzone.

On Jacksonville's first play of their ensuing possession, Nick Foles tried to air it out to Dede Westbrook. But, Logan Ryan played fantastic coverage and picked the ball off, which effectively ended the game.

The Titans pulled off the epic comeback with their 37-31 win.
