Minnesota tramples Purdue, gets bowl eligible at 6-6
Minneapolis, Minnesota -
Minnesota ran all over Purdue in their regular season finale, improving their record to 6-6 and becoming bowl eligible for the third straight season.

After a long run by Cade Cannon set the Gophers up in side the Purdue five yard line Minnesota had to settle for a Santoso field goal following a dropped pass by Williams in the endzone. After that Minnesota poured it on, scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter and picking off Danny Etling in between. Second quarter scores came via a 17 yard pass from Cannon to Fruechte. Cannon was running to his right and threw an absolute dime to Fruechte on the play. Cannon scored a few minutes later on a three yard option keep run after a Purdue punt. Brien Boddy-Calhoun picked off Etling less than a minute later and Cannon added a second rushing TD before halftime.

Purdue got on the board in the third quarter when Etling connected with Carvajal for a five yard score. A few plays later Cannon connected with Williams for a long gain and set up first and goal inside the five. Drew Goodger got the rare carry from the fullback spot and made it count with a four yard TD run.

Cannon found Williams for a score early in the fourth quarter to put Minnesota up 37-6. Purdue scored on another Etling to Carvajal TD pass following a long kick return to make it 37-13 with about six minutes left in the game. Leidner replaced Cannon and after a heavy dose of handoffs it was Williams Jr plunging into the endzone with just over a minute left to play.

The win improved the Gophers record to 6-6 on the season and made them bowl eligible for the third straight season. Since hiring Jerry Kill Minnesota has played in bowls three of his four seasons.

Utah tops Minnesota on last second field goal
Minneapolis, Minnesota -
Minnesota led Utah 24-16 going into the fourth quarter of the Meineke Car Care Bowl last night but the Utes refused to give up, scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter and winning the game on a 30 yard field goal by senior kicker Chris Van Orden as time expired.

Utah struck first with Van Orden connecting on a 33 yard field goal to cap the Utes first possession. Minnesota answered with Cade Cannon finding tight end Maxx Williams for a four yard touchdown. Cannon went 3 for 3 on the drive.

Early in the second quarter Utah took the lead when Travis Wilson connected with Dres Anderson for a 10 yard touchdown. Minnesota retook it a few minutes later when Cannon and Williams connected again, this time for a three yard score. After forcing a Utah fumble the Gophers gave the ball right back when Donnell Kirkwood coughed it up. Utah was feeling generous and gave the ball right back on a fumble of their own. Minnesota added a field goal to make it 17-10 at the break.

Cannon caught fire right after halftime, running for a gain of 39 yards on the first play of the second half and then scoring on a 35 yard run two plays later. Santoso's kick gave the Gophers a 24-10 lead but Utah wasted no time in answering the score, cutting the lead to 24-16 with a TD run on their ensuing possession. Minnesota would punt on their next possession after a drop by Maye on a big hit. Utah put together a 16 play drive to start the fourth quarter, scoring on a Radley TD run and tying the game on a two point conversion with about six and a half minutes left in the game.

Minnesota's drive would stall and turn disastrous as Utah blocked the punt then scored on a 32 yard Wilson to Anderson pass a few plays later, giving Utah a 31-24 lead with 3:28 left in the game.

Cannon refused to be rattled, standing in the pocket and delivering a long pass to Goodger and then running for a gain of 17 to the Utah 37. Williams Jr ran for a gain of eight then Cannon picked up another first down with a five yard run. Williams Jr picked up 12 yards, setting up a first down for Minnesota at the Utah 12 yard line with under two minutes left in the game. Coleman ran for a gain of eight and then Cannon put it in the endzone, scoring on a read option keep. Santoso tied it up with 1:16 to play and the Minnesota sideline held their collective breath as the defense went out to try to hold Utah.

Utah would nod be held however as Wilson completed a pair of big passes down to the Minnesota 13 yard line and Van Orden split the uprights as time expired.

"Hate to lose like that." Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill said after the loss. "Hate to lose at all. The team played hard and fought all game, all season really. We're proud of them and we're excited for next year."

MINNESOTA FOOTBALL

Minnesota's new look QB room
Cade Cannon is electric but nothing but questions behind him

By gopherguy05 | Aug 16, 2015, 1:02pm CST

CADE CANNON, ANTHONY GRIFFIN AND STANLEY DAVIS

Last season Cade Cannon, Mitch Leidner and Chris Streveler all were involved in the QB rotation for Minnesota. Now Leidner is off to Northern Iowa, Streveler is a wide receiver and Cannon finds himself in a QB room with a pair of true freshmen in Anthony Griffin and Stanley Davis.

When compared to Cannon both Griffin and Davis are statues, preferring to stay in the pocket and deliver the ball downfield. Davis comes in as a three star recruit, ranked as the #45 pocket passer in the class by Rivals.

Griffin, from New Kingman - Butler, Arizona is a four star and the 11th best pocket QB in the class according to Rivals.

Minnesota had also signed #59 pocket passer Andy Ratliff, but he decommitted when it started to look like Griffin would sign. Ratliff is now at Sam Houston State.

Cannon will be the clear cut starter from day one but it gets scary if something should happen to him. Cannon, a runner who doesn't shy away from contact, indicated he doesn't intend to change his playing style due to the team's lack of depth at the position.

"That's how a lot of injuries happen." Cannon said. "You try to do this or that to protect yourself but you get out of what your accustomed to and you end up getting injured because of that."

Minnesota does have contingency plans in Streveler, who started working with the receivers late last season, and Donovahn Jones, also a receiver who started out as a QB.

"We're extremely comfortable with our situation at the position." Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill explained. "I'd be willing to bet that there are a number of programs that wish they had as much young talent at QB. We're good."

Minnesota starts their season against Ohio in less than two weeks.
