You traded up for a 1st round QB (your new franchise QB) and don't draft another QB in the same draft? Ask the redskins. You don't release or replace your first round traded up franchise QB after 2-3 years? Ask the redskins.
So every scenario is possible in the Rams/Goff story (to come back to the thread opening post) and the game should get a good amount of successfull stories and of course not so sucessfull ones. The NFL changes from year to year, so there should be quite some surprises in CFM life too
The Redskins are a special case and should not be used as a comparison for normal situations. Neither Mike Shanahan nor Kyle Shanahan wanted RGIII- certainly not for the cost. Kyle Shanahan stood on the table for Cousins in that draft. He was the one they wanted. But Dan Snyder played the "Owner" card.
So, usually teams are not going to do what the Redskins did. The Owner forced it.
