Taking a pitch has really helped me improve my hitting. Before I was swinging at way too many first pitches and even if they are a strike, they're normally on the corners and not very hitable. Taking a strike usually leads to a 1-1 count at worst and leads to many more 2-0, 3-1, 2-1 counts where your hitters can do a lot of damage.

always work the count. unless of course a ball comes in right where you wanted one to begin with then just unload on it. but its always good to work the count.

Is it possible to sub players out before they reach the batters box? Say in an NL game I know the pitcher is coming up and I don't want him to bat yet overtime I can't make the change till he is actually in the batters box.

Sometimes the game will ask you if you'd rather have a hitter hit instead of the pitcher before they reach the batters box. Just an FYI though, energy is calculated by pitch/play, so as long as you sub them out before a pitch is thrown, it's the same as if they had been subbed out before reaching the box.

Any tips on pitching with extreme shifts? I let the cpu dictate when to use them but it seems like I always give up easy hits with them on. I assume I should pitch toward the shift (left side of the plate if everyone shifts toward first base and vice versa).

Pitching to the shift is a combination of many different factors such as pitch speed, movement, selection, etc. The CPU will shift for pull hitters almost exclusively. The only other fielder movement I've seen is playing deep, bunt and double play coverage. Note: I could be wrong about this as I'm going off my own observations.

Working off the assumption that you are pitching to a pull hitter take note of..

Is he ahead or behind your pitch?
Does your pitcher have the pitch accuracy to pitch inside?
Is he swinging above/below pitches?
Situational baseball? Outs+men on...

All that being said place pitches in locations and at speeds that will ensure he pulls the ball and keeps it on the ground or air. For example, a change up is likely to be pulled as the batter will be ahead of it. In contrast if you've set up your fastball he should be behind. Note: there are always exceptions and I'm by no means an expert.

Have you considered setting your own shifts? I will typically place each defender individually rather than let the computer control the shift. I realize this isn't practical online so I will always keep my outfield straight up and or deep and let the infield shift when online. However, i always pitch to strike him out and only pitch to contact situationally

Hope this helped
