Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

I remember posting one of those WAR graphs a few years ago showing Jones basically keeping pace with Bonds, Griffey, and Mays through the first decade of his career before falling off a cliff. Part...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

I remember making the case for Mauer on here a few years ago.

The upshot is that catchers shouldn't be held to the same standard as other position players since it's such a unique (and punishing)...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

I'm not completely apathetic to PED use. I think guys who knowingly broke the rules should be penalized. I probably wouldn't vote for borderline candidates like Sosa who used.

But the moral...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

Votto and Greinke both have a ways to go still. Votto probably has a better shot though because the bar is lower for position players.

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

There's little doubt it helped extend the careers of older guys who otherwise might have been out of the game, but as an all-encompassing explanation for the offensive boom of the late 90s-early...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

I don't know if the muscular cheaters of 15-20 years ago disgraced the game any more thoroughly than the guys of 100 years ago who threw the World Series, yet many guys in the former era are getting...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

The moral panic over PEDs ("the steroid era") will be seen by future generations of baseball fans as bizarre imo.

As someone suggested earlier, it still hasn't been conclusively proven that PEDs...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

Legit MVP candidate in '05, also a legit LVP candidate in '08.

Went to a Dodger game that year...and I've never heard a home player booed as loudly as he was. Just an awful experience. One of the...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

Good points. Also, Jones was never a great (or even good) hitter and most of his value was tied to his defense, which tends to peak early.

Maybe he could have hung around as a decent role player...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

I mean, yeah, we can bemoan Jones not aging gracefully, but he still put up +67 WAR in his career, which is top 10 all-time at his position. His career trajectory was very similar to Griffey's, yet...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

Yup. Here's Jones basically keeping pace with 3 of the greatest players in the sport's history through his age 29 season.

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

For a corner OFer who put up a career 124 wRC+ and didn't provide much defensive value, no, not really.

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

Bonds, Clemens, and A-Rod are inner-circle all-time greats. The other guys aren't.

I'm not sure Sosa deserves to be in even ignoring the PED issue, honestly.

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

I'd vote for Halladay, but again, I can't see him getting in as long as Mussina and Schilling, two legit all-time greats, are fighting to get over 50% of the vote.

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

I think Schilling eventually gets in, but you're still talking about a top 20 pitcher in the game's history with some lights-out October performances barely getting 50%+ of the vote after 4 years on...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

Felix is a pretty questionable candidate now that he's hit the wall.

If Mussina and Schilling, two all-time great pitchers, are struggling to get in, I have a hard time seeing Felix getting in.

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

I brought up Mauer last year. If your idea of a HOFer is someone who reaches X threshold of WAR, no, Mauer's not your guy, but if you're willing to reward peak performance and grade catchers on a...

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

He's pretty close to 3,000 hits, so he's a lock IMO.
