It appears that Sony has decided that (at least in Japan), the PlayStation 3 won't come with a hard drive; any such forthcomng device will have to be purchased as an add-on. As for the promise of such a concept - well, don't ask anyone who bought...{br}{br}View the Entire Article{br}

Excellent article and great points. It just doesn't seem like smart business on Sony's end. I realize that we can purchase an extra hard drive, but if the prices are comparable and I don't have to buy a hard drive it is a no-brainer. Like you said, games will have to be ported from the Xbox due to its capabilities. Great points.

I guess I may not be getting a PS3 afterall.

I highly doubt the prices will even be comprable. The latest internet rumors (take them for what they are worth) are Xbox360 $299, and PS3 $399. Sony is allowing their arrogance to lead them down a very slippery slope. Kutaragi called the 360 the "Xbox 1.5".....yet Sony can't even get a HDD in their system right out of the box. Enjoy your Blue-Ray DVD's though.

i'm heavily leaning towards x360. no hd in the ps3 may push me over the edge if confirmed in north america.

Great stuff Shawn.

Xbox 360 was a no brainer for me. SPorts games, FPS, online and a hardrive, while PS3 was up in the air, in the end Ill probably get both, but im not going to rush out for a PS3. As for the Xbox 360, I cant wait!

I was planning on getting both but considering just Xbox 360, at least at first

# 8 Ghutton @ 07/02/05 07:11 PM
That made up my mind. I'm going with the 360 for sure now.

Im gonna sit on it for awhile and im prob gonna end up buying both.

The reason why Sony is considering (note CONSIDERING) dropping the hard drive at this point is cost.

The Xbox 360 is being manufactured with parts straight off the shelf, while the PS3 is being developed with state-of-the art custom-built components. This of course, comes with a price.

The end result is, Sony is already going to be taking a financial loss with the PS3, much like Microsoft is, and analysts say that the company will be absorbing a loss of about $75 a unit. Now, add a $100 hard drive to the price and Sony's left with three options:

1. Take an additional $100 hit per unit, which is unacceptable from a business standpoint, because then Sony will lose so much money on it that they will lose all hope of EVER making it back.
2. Raise the price of the PS3 another $100, when its already expected to be $100 than the XBox360, this is also unacceptable, because then people like everyone in these forums will be talking about how greedy Sony's being, without knowing the facts.
3. Make the hard drive optional.

Between those three options, the only one that Sony can take without kissing their market dominance goodbye is the third. It is still highly likely that even if Sony makes the HD optional, that there will be both a "Value pack" with HD, and a "bare bones" pack without HD available on the marketplace when it comes out.

This is simply giving the consumers a choice in the matter, which is always preferable to a mandatory price increase. The PS3 is a far far FAR superior system to the XBox360 as far as horsepower goes, but that power comes with a price.

You've bought every single bit of hype that Kutaragi has thrown at you. Where to start? The 3 core Power PC cpu the Xbox uses is not 'striaght off the shelf', neither is the custom built ATI gpu otherwise known as Xenon. Part of Sony's problem is that they spent a billion dollars developing the cell, which they did'nt do for the sake of video games, not to mention Blue-Ray which is nothing but overkill, Bluetooth, etc. You're going to be paying $400 for a system that does'nt even have a HDD, which in this day and age should be included standard. As far as power goes, it's a wash. The PS3 can do more floating point calculations per second, but the Xbox 360 has much more general computing power that the PS3 not to mention other advantages such as ATI's unified shading built into the Xenon. They have vastly different designs, and go about things in totally different ways...to say that one is "far, far, FAR superior in horsepower" is nothing but rubbish. Sony said the same thing about Dreamcast, and as it turns out the Dreamcast was a better system than the PS2. Don't fall for the Sony hype. I see you also give them the benefit of the doubt as far as future HDD inclusion. I've seen direct quotes from Kutaragi that say the HDD is not necessary....they are'nt merely 'considering' not including a hard drive. It's a done deal. Either way, they'll be splitting their installed base which as far as game developers are concerned...there may as well not be any PS3's with an HDD because they won't develop for it. Just admit that Sony's making a huge mistake. But then according to Kutaragi, the PS3 is "not a game machine".

but you do realize that developers cannot count on a HD being there, look at the Sony HDD addon for PS2, everyone I've talked to that bought it wished they didn't...so why even release an addon when no one will take advantage of it. Personally I think a HD is better for a gaming system than Blu Ray (right now), so it'll be interesting to see how things turn out. Seems like Sony's putting all their eggs in the Blu Ray basket (taking a loss to get their technology pushed)

Also Xbox is far superior to PS2 right now, but it released second and look what happened (developers wrote for PS2 and ported to xbox)...perhaps the opposite will happen next gen

I really don't see the argument about Sony's making the HD optional being a boost for the XBox.. correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't the XBox360's HD also detachable, meaning it can function without one? Wouldn't that mean that the XB360's HD is also optional?

i see being sold with one vs having the option to purchase it later to be different...sure, if you pull out the HD you might lose some options, but since every Xbox 360 will come with a HD, the devs can pretty much count on it being in there when you play, whereas with the PS3 the devs are forced to assume that no one has it (because how many casual gamers would actually purchase a HD?)

Truly, I really don't know what's gonna happen, just speculating on my part, but i prefer getting the HD included, because I hate the "feature creep", where you don't just buy the system, but buy a mem card, HD, network adapter (for PS2), etc...makes it all a lot more expensive than the price would make you think. For me, i'm re-evaluating my thought to get both at launch, going to see how I like the 360, and see if I really need a PS3 right away...I'll get one eventually, but maybe a year later when the price drops.

There are certain peripherals that are assumed that casual gamers will have, like an extra controller (since the PS2 only came with 1, any game with multiplayer is assuming the gamer bought an extra). Memory cards are also assumed as a mandatory peripheral. Why would it NOT be assumed in the next generation that hard drives are a mandatory peripheral? It was a different story with the PS2, where the HDD came out years after the system's release, and only a select few games supported it. If a hard drive is available at launch for the PS3 and the vast majority of games (if not all of them) support it, then casual gamers WILL buy it.

I strongly disagree. If Sony plans to release their system with a price tag of $399, it's foolish to expect the "casual" gamer to fork over the extra money to purchase a hard drive. Maybe the hardcore gamer will, but we're not talking about a $15-$30 dollar peripheral here.

yep, you figure $400 for the console plus you will end up buying 1 or 2 games too. Now you are looking at $500 bucks. I think Sony is making a big mistake with this, but I am guessing they had no choice because they wanted to keep the price as low as possible for the PS3.

I agree im not. At this rate I might not even buy a PS3. After I got an Xbox and XBL I hardly touched my PS2 . Im hoping 360 is enough for me.

yeah, the price of an HD isn't the price of a controller, and wouldn't the casual gamer be annoyed that they required an addon like that? N64 did it with that additional ram or whatever (some games required it), but they even bundled it with a game in order to get people to have it...will Sony bundle a HD with a game and sell it for 50 bucks as a package? I doubt it

# 20 dave360 @ 07/05/05 02:24 AM
Didn't Kutagari come out and say that the HD will be 80 gigs or something like that? That will be well over 100 dollars I would say. I think that Sony has too many lofty goals with the PS3 that may bite in the hiney in the end. Why on earth would you put Linux on a gaming console? I understand the novelty of it, but is it practical? Most folks who have a console also have a computer and wouldn't use the internet functions on it to begin with.
