UFC Undisputed 2010 News Post

Gamespot has posted their hands-on preview of UFC Undisputed 2010, which also includes a video interview with Nevin Dravinski, Producer of the game.

Quote:
"Other various and sundry additions punctuate the UFC Undisputed 2010 Career mode, but it's about time we talk about the gameplay. Last year's game successfully married deep combat with relatively simple (or at least intuitive) controls. That control scheme remains largely intact for 2010, though with a few changes. It's that same core control scheme, where your four limbs are mapped to the four face buttons, with modifiers for high/low attacks and a blocking ability. New this year is the ability to sway away from attacks with your feet firmly planted in place, contrasting with last year's side-stepping ability. Swaying is a simple matter of holding the right bumper, or R1, and moving the left stick. Imagine your fighter is on the left side of the screen. Moving left on the stick causes him to sway back; up will have him sway to his left; and down will have him sway to his right. It might be tough to wrap your head around at first, but we found it to be a simple system to learn with a controller in hand, as well as a pretty fun way to nimbly dodge attacks. There's also an interesting risk-reward element to it. For example, swaying to your right to avoid an opponent's right jab is helpful to you, but if you misread it and he's actually throwing a left, it can be pretty devastating.

The ground game is another area that's seen a lot of changes. The big one is that flash submissions are now a possibility, so if the dice roll your way during a random twist and turn on the ground, you might be able to quickly force your opponent to tap out much the same way you can quickly knock out an opponent in the first 10 seconds of a match if a punch is perfectly landed. A new indicator to let you know who's winning a submission hold is the way the camera zooms in if the one doing the holding is successfully applying increasing pressure and zooms out if the other guys is successfully countering a hold. In addition, the system of rapidly pressing buttons to get out of a hold has been done away with, as both players now must rapidly turn the right analog stick (no matter which side of the hold you're on) to win those scenarios."

I wish they had a bit more on the Career mode in the way of sponsorships, defending the belt, etc.

But I loved that bit of info. Very cool stuff.

I'm sold on this game even though near the end of my time with 2009, I started to hate it.

Hopefully they have more than just a few voice options. A lot of games that have options for voices usually tend to give you a limited amount or just bad ones in general. Saint's Row 2 would be an example of that.

Loving that there is weigh ins, post fight gear and all that little stuff too.

Funny that they have it so you start off outside the UFC. I get the feeling that next year they'll include TUF so you can start your career that way. With the new voice options for CAFs that's probably another sign that it will be included in the future.

Small things I picked up from the video:

- More arenas! The St. Pierre /Hardy fight was in the Bell Centre in Montreal. MGM Grand in Vegas for the Jones/Mcsweeney fight. Also looks like GM Place in Vancouver is in. The arenas look really realistic too. Check out the overhead shot at the 4:40 point.

-Sparring looks way more realistic with the pads and headgear.

-Dissapointed there are no fighter walkthroughs...maybe next year.

The GnP from half guard looked phenomenal. The overall animations on the ground looks way more smooth this year.

Someone who was at the premiere party last night said the developers mentioned that a demo was coming soon and would feature get this SIXTEEN fighters.

Am I the only one who thinks that this game will be an online spam-fest, because the punches look like they are thrown way faster than last year. But at least there is head movement, and what appears to be a good counter system.

The offline looks like it will be great though, especially the new career mode.

This looks awesome.

very excited and very glad to hear about customization of fighters. I can choose a muay thai kick and a judo throw and so on .... that's great. That's like an old genesis game called best of the best - it was great kickboxing game and you mapped each move you wanted to each direction/button.

Please be true. Not even the 16 fighters part either. I want to play this now.

I like what they have done with the career mode, it was very disappointing last year. Im glad to hear you dont have to worry about blocking transitions so much now, spamming transition blocks KILLED online matches. Im a little disappointed that the strikes are still very robotic looking. All in all it looks like a much improved version of last year.

I got this off another review of someone who was at the premiere

Quote:
The version we played essentially could be a demo, but if it is going to be the demo, than it is the greatest demo in the history of demos. The modes available at the event were Exhibition, Tournament, and Create-A-Fighter. The roster available was 8 heavyweights, and 8 welterweights. Heavyweights included the previously shown fighters: Mir, Nog, Cain, Nelson (who looks fat-tastic), McSweeney, Schaub, and Jones, with Shane Carwin. The welterweights were the usual bunch of GSP, Alves, Fitch, Serra, Thiago, and Swick with new guys Hardy and Trigg.

If you step punch you don’t fly across the cage and you travel at the same speed as the normal punches/steps.

Also, big change from last year is that no strikes will ‘freeze’ your fighter. So when someone leg kicks you or throws body hooks you can keep striking and moving. You will never be in a position striking where you cannot move.
Nice. The stepping strikes and the freezing were the most ridiculous things about 2009.

If you just stand there and throw punches like that, I'm thinking you are susceptible to a take down. But with online, it is impossible to get around people that abuse. It will always be like that in online gaming. Video games are programmed, and given the time, some loser will find a way to exploit what is programmed.

Something I think that needs to be added is better foot movement. Sometimes the fighters look like sock puppets because it seems the only thing moving are their arms when punching. A little more momentum in the body could be added.

Looks great though. You really get the sense they improved on much, like an annual release should.

I hope ratings matter alot more this year. Last year you could create a fighter with a 15 offensive ground grapple rating and still transition and reverse at the same skill and level of say someone rated 95 in same area.

I want to see guys that struggle on the ground....STRUGGLE!! Kimbo on his back should be TOUGH as all hell to work out that position or prevent the submission. It should be your goal BEFORE the fight to realize if you get taken down......YOU ARE SCREWED. So in turn you should let your hands fly in less bunches and more one shot power shots and also looking for the sprawl to prevent the take down. I want to see this kind of gameplanning for all different kinds of fighters.

I also want to see the CPU use fighters how they fight in real life. I don't want to see Clay trying to stand and bang all fight. I want to see him go for the take down and make use of his ground and pound from guard. Nonstop work, little motor that he is.

Also interested to see how they improved Lyoto Machida fighting style. To see if you can really do such as him and get in and out with out taking damage.
