More NHL 10 Community Day Info Stuck
Posted on June 10, 2009 at 09:00 AM.
Time to let loose with a little more info on items that we were shown in NHL 10 at the Community Event back in May!

New ways to score

You’ve already seen some clips and photos of players shooting from their knees in NHL 10, but this only a small part of the spectacular new ways you can score! You will have a few new bullets in your belt to fire on the goalies, as players can shoot from their knees as well as bat pucks out of the air to try and get the puck past the goalie. When we saw NHL 10, I saw Ovechkin skate in on a breakaway attempt only to be hooked from behind by a defender…but that didn’t stop him. While on his knees, Ovechkin still had the presence to take a shot on goal! While he didn’t score, it was still great to see this new scoring animation.

On another game I saw Crosby try one of his patented mid-air puck bat-in attempts…Gonchar blasted a shot from the point that was stopped by the goalie, but Crosby took a mid-air swipe at the puck to try to bat the puck in before the goalie could get back into position.

These new ways to score looked fantastic, and the developers did verify that only the upper-echelon skilled players would be able to pull off these moves.

Improved goalie A.I. & new animations

Don’t start feeling sorry for the goaltenders just yet, as they got some love too for NHL 10! There has been over 150 new goalie animations added to the game this year, and it shows. Goalies are a lot smarter in this game…long gone are the days of flopping out of position. They play the angle a lot better from what I saw, and will do whatever it takes to make the desperation save --- I saw a goalie stop a puck and then twist around and knock the puck out of the air and into the corner with his stick to clear the crease.

The new animations were very noticeable when we saw the game in action and looked to be a big improvement from NHL 09.

In-game facial animations

You’ve already seen how tough and physical NHL 10 is with game clips including first person fighting…now you can see the strain and pain on the players face as they take the big hit, big punch, or shot block.

Improved styles of play

Each team seemed to play a style of play closer to their real life counterpart, and the improved animations and puck physics make NHL 10 even more realistic than ever. Dumping the puck is looks even more refined than it was in NHL 09, and the addition of board play really adds a new aspect of the game to teams that like to dump the puck in and use their size and strength to pin the puck in the offensive zone and wear the defense down.

Overall the play is much more physical and more realistic feeling…I didn’t see players skating freely through the neutral zone like in 09. Your 3rd and 4th lines really have an impact this year with their physical style of play.

All of these new features looked great when we were shown them in action in NHL 10, and it really make the game look more authentic and realistic than ever.

More NHL 10 news and info coming soon...stay tuned!

are they gonna get rid of the weird looking player on ice from a far? and the unrealistic puck hitting metal sound?

"players can shoot from their knees as well as bat pucks out of the air to try and get the puck past the goalie."

Sounds sweet. I cannot wait for NHL 10.
