Does our plan change (no room, go right ahead) with the updated times listed?
I don't think so. I think two of the teams may HAVE to go to the supply room (if they're smart) because they just got their asses kicked in the XP room. I figure that the Wangs, despite getting crushed, plug on. Although I am curious if they were allowed to shop. I would think that since they were unconscious, they may not have been able to buy goods. So they may even have to go back.
I guess the question is this: Do we think the hallway advances us or does the ? room? I'm guessing the hallway but we'll see.
PurdueBrad
04-18-2010, 09:21 PM
Although, I guess using my above argument, we could argue that we've got the time to take to go into the ? room.
I don't think the Wangs survive the dungeon at this point. I think they've had two guys knocked out twice, but I may be wrong there. That means their time lead doesn't concern me much.
PurdueBrad
04-18-2010, 09:26 PM
Looking back, from what I've garnered from the write-ups and discussion:
DV has gone down twice, Danny and Autumn once each
EF has gone down twice, Jackal and CR once each
Abe, CF, and ntndeacon once each
Us: No knockdowns yet
IF everyone else charges ahead, which could their inclination, then I don't want us getting left behind BUT if they charge ahead, they'll be w/o heals basically. This is a tough freakin call.
PurdueBrad
04-18-2010, 09:31 PM
So my gut is 60-40 in favor of moving down the hallway.
PurdueBrad
04-18-2010, 10:13 PM
I'll be on early AM tomorrow (6 am CST) and should have access most of the day. If somebody puts in a PM order, let me know otherwise I can tomorrow.
I'm still up for the ? room if you guys want. Otherwise, I'd advocate skipping the exp room to move on ahead and save ourselves the KOs that seem inevitable from the hints others dropped (though this could have been them trying to mislead us).

I actually based it off of what KWhit said re: only three players are still conscious. Seems like the XP room is basically an endless onslaught.
With that being the case, if the DV's group heads there, I guess they'll be down to two men..er..women left.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 08:50 AM
Yeah, my big hope here is that people stay back. I think the two groups that went to the XP room are going to HAVE to go get supplies. Since they all got knocked out, they must have burned through health. Danny's group, who we beat, will probably do what we're doing, which is head down the hall. I would LOVE to see them take on the XP room but I don't think they will.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 08:52 AM
J23, since I know you're around some, what are your thoughts on purchases? Hoops has it worked out that we get:
Staff of lightning
Longsword +1
Lockpicks
2 health potions
and have 40 left over
The only thing I was wondering is if we just want to get the third health potion and have 15 left over. That gives one each.
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 08:57 AM
I'm fine with the third potion. It just means that we aren't going to be getting much in the way of items for a little while.
I'm also pretty curious about the star room. If we are going to blow our wad, and we are only 8 seconds off the lead in the race, I'm thinking that it makes sense to go get something. So if we are scared of getting whacked by the XP room then instead lets check out the star room and see if we get something of note there.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 09:05 AM
Hoops, if J23 is up for it then lets do the star room. I'm ready to have some more fun!
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 09:14 AM
Also, the meatshield only has 13 health so it might make sense to drop a heal on him right now before going into another room. I don't want to have to waste a combat action if we do encounter something in there that we need to battle.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 09:27 AM
I'll send in that order on J23's behalf. J23, feel free to override it if you prefer.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 09:28 AM
KWHIT- Did we get experience points for our fight with the Wangs or was it just the satisfaction of slaying those smug bastards and getting gold?
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 09:28 AM
Was there ever any doubt that the crowd would gravitate towards us? I'm just stunned that those hapless losers are still #2 on the list.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 09:29 AM
People love bloodshed and violence and I will give them what they want.
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 09:43 AM
PB, if you could try to make it more of their blood and less of your own in the process that would be even better.
Or not ... having you wounded makes you a little more obedient so maybe that is for the best.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 09:44 AM
HEY, if I didn't swing my sword like a deaf bat, you and I would be squaring off right now.
KWhit

KWHIT- Did we get experience points for our fight with the Wangs or was it just the satisfaction of slaying those smug bastards and getting gold?
Yes, you did receive XP.
The purchases look fine to me.
I'll send in the order to heal PB as well, just in case.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 10:34 AM
Hopefully you guys can tell, I'm all talk in the thread, no change to our orders.
Whatever games you want to play with them is fine by me. If they're foolish enough to rely on your word, then this is going to be easier to win than I had thought.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 10:42 AM

I genuinely think that two teams are going to the supply closet, the two that went for XP originally. The ones that I can't figure out are Danny but my guess is that they are heading down the hallway.
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 10:44 AM
I think we go "?", make the purchases, and do the heal on PB prior to battle.
If that doesn't match the order can someone either update it or talk me out of this line of thought?
I sent in the heal order specifically, and nothing else.
PB - did you include the purchases in your PM?
BTW - it occured to me that it would be *hilarious* if the supply vendor had a limited amount of items to sell, so the sword, lockpicks, staff, etc wouldn't be avaliable to the other teams spending their turn there this turn.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 10:51 AM
This is what I sent KWhit, with a later PM to ask to be healed prior to entering the ? room:
Purchase The Staff of Lightning for J23, the Longsword +1 for PB, the lockpicks for Hoops, and three health potions (one for each of us, bringing us each to two I believe). That costs 425 of our 440. Spread the 15 pieces out equally to each.
After that, we will go in the door with the "?" mark. We wouldn't be evil if we weren't curious and destructive.
Oops, you sent that to me as well. I should have just gone and re-read my PMs.
I think we're good for today then.
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 10:54 AM
That will work - looking forward to the next update.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 10:55 AM
Yeah, quite excited about the deadline as well. I really am enjoy this game and this team. Not quite as much as I enjoy killing, but still a lot. BTW, anybody else notice that Scud Farkus has been noticeably absent?

Also, giving a shout out to Hoops!

Scud is clearly terrified of you. That is the only explanation (guffaw).
Inner monologue - why does the half-wit obsess over the simplest of things? When the time comes to dispose of him I'll merely say, "Look, Scud Farkus!" and then plunge my daggers into his spine when he spins around in a full-on berserko/dumbass rage.

J23 casts Heal on PB. You buy your items.
J23 takes the Staff. This staff shoots a bolt of lightning at your opponent, with a greater chance to hit and more damage than your traditional attack. It has an unlimited supply of charges.

?? Room
You open the door with the question mark.
A blue glowing portal is in front of you.
You say "What the hell?" and enter the portal.
A nauseous tugging sensation in your guts and then:
You're back at the button room.
The 4 buttons on the wall in front of you are once again active. They are labeled:
Bestiarii
Big Wang Theory
Killian's Killers
Deutschbäg
You may once again press one of them.
Interesting.... I would say we use the button to try to snipe one of the two teams that we think went into the supply room while they may be wounded. Thoughts?
KWhit
04-19-2010, 12:07 PM
You notice that Bestiarii is also back in their portion of the Button Room.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 12:08 PM
Hell yeah
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 12:09 PM
I want to take out one of the teams that has had somebody knocked down twice, see if we can make them suffer.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 12:10 PM
I would say either the Wangs again (but I'm worried nothing will hit them since they aren't in the glass room again) OR Bestiarii.
If you want to kill off EF, just say so!
I'm totally fine with dropping it on them if you're worried about the room mechanics.
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 12:16 PM
Pushing the button on ourselves might not be a bad option either - could get some experience rather than giving it to other teams.
We might want to watch the timing of it though. If we press their button, they'll retaliate and hit ours Im sure. While we could probably deal with it just fine, would it be better to let them try to weaken one of the other groups in the meantime?
Either way, I think we should hold off and make the decision with more information (which they push) if possible.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 12:28 PM
If you want to kill off EF, just say so!
HA! Who doesn't want to do that? Seriously though, I'm pretty open here.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 12:30 PM
That team is probably smart enough to hit Danny's team. WAIT A MINUTE: We're here, Bestiarii is here, I assume CR's team is in the supply room. That means Danny's team either went xp, which would make no sense, or down the hall and have gotten ahead.
I'm much more in favor of pushing their button.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 12:31 PM
I went fishing in the main thread since Jackal is in there. I'm hoping they'll say they'll get Danny too.
Well, we could always push the BWT button, and if it doesn't work, maybe the other team would notice and push our button, netting us the xp that we'd get from pushing our own.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 12:37 PM
EF, I don't know how much I trust him, has said they'll push Wang's button. I'm up for it and want to do it. Hoops? J23?
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 12:45 PM
Let them go first, then we can make our call.
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 12:50 PM
I've got to head out for awhile, but if one of you needs to make a quick call don't feel the need to wait up for me.
I'll berate you later if it doesn't work, and fail to praise you if it does work, but that is par for the course.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 12:51 PM
I did throw out the simultaneous idea. If you look at what happened when the first two teams hit the button around the same time, Wangs got drilled with acid and then spiders w/ no pause. I'm wondering the same thing. Worst case, they double-cross us and push our button and we get some xp.
I say we just push it when one of them is around to do the same.
They push the same - cool, someone might die
They backstab and push ours - cool, xp for us
Worst case might be picking themselves to deprive us of some xp!
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 01:06 PM
Exactly, this is a great idea. J23, we'll do it in 5 minutes it looks like.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 01:06 PM
Oops, make that 4.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 01:11 PM
Perfect!!!
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 01:42 PM
Well, looks like we earned a button push from the Wang tribe. Good, I wanted some XP anyway and I think we'll be fine in terms of the race relative to the other teams.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 01:43 PM
Wang doesn't have a button, he's screwing around.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 01:44 PM
Wang doesn't have a button, he's screwing around.
At least that is the assumption I'm making since we don't see them in their old room.
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 01:52 PM
Too bad, if true.
Sadly, your thought on the Wang's does resonate with me. It would seem to be their style to run ahead without facing any of the scary monsters.
I don't think the monsters have to be scary for them to run.

PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 03:13 PM

KWhit
04-19-2010, 03:15 PM
J23 - Pick a new spell.
Level 4 (pick 1 additional):
You may choose one additional spell from the following list:
Heal, Magic Missile, Detect Magic, Light, Read Magic, Mage Armor, Fear, Sleep, Web, Identify, Cure Poison
You may choose a spell you already possess which will allow you to cast it 2x per room/combat instead of once.
KWhit

After pressing the button in the room, you decide you need to plow ahead. You rush into the hallway and continue on until you reach a large wooden door.
Opening it reveals a cavernous tunnel of rock. You venture in, but after a few steps and some twists and turns, it becomes very difficult to see. You press on, but it is slow going.
After a couple of minutes of walking, you see a faint light ahead. You rush on and come to a large open cave. The light is coming from a group of torches hanging from the ceiling in the middle of the room. The torches light the middle of the cavern, but not the sides. You can't tell if there is an exit, and if so, which direction it is in.
A pond sits in the middle of the cavern. It looks fairly deep.
You can make the following choices.
Search left.
Search right.
Search straight ahead.
Enter pond.
Also, let me know if you are doing this together as a group or splitting up. In other words, you could send one player into the pond while someone else searches left, etc.
Please give me fairly detailed instructions as to what you want to do and in what order, so if you search left and don't find anything, I know that you want to search right next (for example).
Try to get your action to me tonight by 9. I'd like to run this action then. If you can't, let me know.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 03:19 PM
J23, congrats! Now don't pick something stupid.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 03:22 PM
Guys, I teach at the university until about 7 pm EST so let me throw out some early thoughts.
I'm willing to either enter the pond or search right. Then straight, then left.
So in order of preference: Pond, right, straight, left.
If you want to split up, send me to the pond or send me right.
J23 may want to cast a detect magic just in case as I'm thinking the pond likely has either a prize or a horrible beast.

J23: Detect magic
If magic, we all go to magic.
If no magic, then we split up?
PB = POND
J23 + Hoops = LEFT
That should give us teams that would be capable of dealing with any physical threats in the chamber.
[muses to cameras]
Or get the half-troll partner of mine mauled as he plumes the depths for my treasure. Win-win. I'll keep the mage close in case the need emerges to gut him for treachery. But that one has been the less insolent of my partners.[/end musing]
In the interests of time, perhaps we should consider splitting up all three options if we don't detect any magic. I would hope we can come to each other's aid since it is in the same room.
hoopsguy
04-19-2010, 06:55 PM
OK, let me know how you want to split it up, J23. I'll hopefully be on some between now and deadline to put in an order.

Pool and a pond; pond be good for PB.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 07:00 PM
Alright, putting in the following order now:
J23 casts detect magic
IF magic is detected, we all go towards it.
If no magic, PB explores the pond, J23 goes left, Hoops goes right
Just wanted to say this thread has been the most fun to read so far since I've been back in town this week.

KWhit

J23 casts Detect Magic.
You see a glowing aura deep within the pond. You dive into it pond and search. It doesn't take very long since all three of you were looking, and you find a chest. Your Specialist does his thing, opens it and viola! You've got a magical item. This looks to be a golden ring with a red ruby at its center. You can tell it's magic, but that's all you know about it so far.
Now I need a clarification:
What direction(s) do you search next and in what order, and by whom? It wasn't 100% clear from the wording on your PM. Get this to me asap and I'll run the rest of the room.
PurdueBrad
04-19-2010, 09:16 PM
Sent KWhit our clarification. We're searching right, straight, then left. If we hit a door in any of that search, we're bolting through it.
As for the magic ring, thoughts?

PB searches right - YOU FIND A DOOR.
Hoops searches straight - finding NOTHING.
J23 searches left and triggers a TRAP! Spikes shoot down from the ceiling, and J23 takes a NASTY scrape!
Then you all go through the door to the Right and proceed.

Room 8:
This room is another arena-type room, but much smaller then the one in which the Crawl began. Fans in bleachers line the walls, screaming for and against you.
In the center of the room is an elf and a halfling. The elf smiles at you, and bows gently. "My name is Walter. This is my associate Platty. We've been hired to keep you from going through that door."
Walter points to the only other exit from the room. Somehow you have to get through them to move on. Walter carries a staff. Platty carries a long, jagged, glowing dagger.
"I am a sporting type (my associate isn't), so I will give you a moment to refresh yourselves before we begin."
You may cast spells, drink potions, or take some other preparatory action before battle. Let me know what (if anything) you want to do by Noon tomorrow, then the fun begins.

J23, a couple recommendations then:

3- Pass me the poison and I'll apply it to my sword if you don't mind

This is what I was thinking as well. My concern with the guy with the staff is that he is likely magic/mage-like so I didn't want to let him stand off to the side and take pot-shots and cast heals on the big guy.
J23 and I will take down the elf then. I am hoping to get three critical hits on this guy this game, I've had awful luck with that thus far.

Hoops, does it matter that the Elf is not a tank? I thought he had a glowing sword at first, but it's actually a dagger, so he's likely a specialist like you. I guess I'm the one without a true match this battle, so I can attack either place you would like.
Hopefully we can score that dagger for you Hoops.
hoopsguy
04-20-2010, 06:44 AM
Doesn't matter to me who you line up with, PB. Whichever one it is, just beat them into a pulp and hand me their magic items.
Sorry, wasn't able to pop on for more than a minute or two last night, and I didn't put in what spell I was taking. Figuring that out right now.
Ok. I'll cast identify on the ring, cast heal on myself and give the flask of poison to PB.
As far as my staff of lightning, it has unlimited charges, so I can blast away to my heart's content with it.
So hoops and I tear up the elf real quick while PB steps on the halfling. Sound good?
Actually, since KWhit said we can cast 1 spell in prep and 1 during combat, I guess I'll use my spell to identify the ring and drink one of my two potions to heal.

Actually, since KWhit said we can cast 1 spell in prep and 1 during combat, I guess I'll use my spell to identify the ring and drink one of my two potions to heal.
That's not what I meant. You can cast as many spells as you want during prep time - but you can't cast the same one 2x (unless you've selected it twice when leveling - make sense?).
What I meant was that you couldn't cast heal twice during prep time. But if you want to cast heal and cast identify, you can.
However, each spell cast during prep time (or any time in between rooms) eats up time on the clock. Spells cast during combat eat one of your combat turns (and combat turns equal clock time as well).
That other team thought they could copy our genius of having a 5 star rating in their thread.
Not to worry, minions. I took care of it.
Ok, I'll use the healing spell rather than the potion pre-fight then.

I saw them creeping, Poli. So I put in the last five star (4th one) to let them know it wasn't just us puffing up our ratings ... that we have fans beyond our team who clearly appreciate our evil outlook.
Glad to see you punish their ratings as well. Top notch. I would hope other readers would follow your lead.

J23 has leveled up.
Level 5 (pick 1 additional):
You may choose one additional spell from the following list:
Heal, Magic Missile, Detect Magic, Light, Read Magic, Mage Armor, Fear, Sleep, Web, Identify, Cure Poison, Summon Monster, Protection From Arrows
You may choose a spell you already possess which will allow you to cast it 2x per room/combat instead of once.

I'm not about to pull the classical blunder of spilling my plans before they are complete. That would be like starting a land war in Asia, or going against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

That makes sense. I'm just surprised this game as there are times, like earlier today, where there are 6 named players signed in and an additional 8 guests. Usually we're around 0 guests, so I was a bit surprised.
Yeah, I'm really leaning towards a 2nd heal since I think it may save us the most time. A summoned monster would certainly be nice to have an extra round of attacks for combat, but healing damage from not only fights, but the traps we've come across seems to be swaying me.

PurdueBrad
04-20-2010, 01:40 PM
I think we might be able to score a health potion. I will sell my sword to get us 5 more gold. Anybody else have any extra equipment. I would think/hope that 30 might buy us 2.
PurdueBrad
04-20-2010, 01:49 PM
Man, they just keep pulling ahead. We're getting to a point where we need to have one of them die in order for us to make some headway.
I'm thinking I'll take the extra heal spell, drink a potion, heal both of you two, and we press ahead to gain some time since we have very little money. Since I have two healing potions, I can give the extra after I use one to PB since he seems to find ways to get himself hurt the most often.
Thoughts?
hoopsguy
04-20-2010, 02:08 PM
Hmm, I would have thought that health would come back upon being re-spawned.

PurdueBrad
04-20-2010, 02:50 PM
Hmm, I would have thought that health would come back upon being re-spawned.
Yeah, I was kind of hoping the same thing as well re: health after respawning.
J23, frankly, that may not be a bad idea. It uses a lot of what we have but if we can push ahead, score some gold, PLUS you can still cast heals during battle, we can probably make it through another room or so. Shit. Yeah, push ahead makes more sense than waiting and hoping for potions at the market.
PurdueBrad

This would be the plan I would vote for at this point. I'll be really curious to see how the other teams do with the next room. I'm expecting a couple people to have 2 knockdowns at this point, we're extremely lucky that J23 has 0 and Hoops and I only have 1.
Looking back, I wonder if the right strategy would have been to just spend all of our money on healing potions, which would be somewhat disappointing honestly.

I hate taking the long path. It is gutless and is going to ding our fame. And it might be one of those "not what they appear" scenarios ...

After being KO'd yesterday I'm gone through a period of intense introspection. Here is what I've learned about myself in comabt:
1.) I am good at killing ghouls
2.) I am good at KO'ing heroes
3.) I struggle against short people
4.) I live longer when PB is getting hit
PurdueBrad
04-21-2010, 01:22 PM
4.) I live longer when PB is getting hit
And honestly, that is basically my job. I'm the fullback, Hoops is the running back gouging at them, and J23 is the QB picking them off. I'm good with that, I'll use brute force and my ability to withstand pain to get us through. That's why when we find the next store/sale, I'll probably dump my cash into health potions.

I won't be around for the deadline tonight. Please don't screw it up too badly while I'm away.

Um, what needs to be done for the deadline tonight? If there was an activity, I missed it.

As far as I know, we have no choices yet. I'll be on around deadline to put in any choices we need. I'll also make sure that J23 cast the identify spell.

Don't worry, I have it taken care of.

Room 11:
You enter a door. As you walk through it, you hear chants of "One man enters. Nobody leaves!"
You're in a stadium of sorts, with fans sitting high above you.
The DJ is there. He says, "Welcome to the Arena! Who wants to fight today?"
He explains that this event is for only ONE player. As a team, you must choose one of you to fight whatever he has in store.
The crowd screams for their favorite player of the team. Will you give him to them?
You cannot tell what or who you will fight. But you can prep with heals, exchanging items, etc before you begin.
Let me know who will fight. As soon as you decide, I will run the battle.

Hmmmm, well it is me or Hoops.

Hear that J23, they have no faith in you (or PB doesn't)... :)

Hoops, I asked KWhit three questions:
1- Can J23 heal me first if I go in
2- Can J23 cast heal spells from the sideline
3- Can a health potion be consumed mid-battle
I'm willing to go in, my thoughts are it has to be you or me.

Unlike your team, we don't want to throw our mage under the bus. We value him.

Not necessarily. We are each down one KO, while J23 has a clean slate. A loss by either one of us here would introduce more risk to our faction.

I value both of my minions as potentially strategic assets that can help me attain greater power and fame.

So much for not throwing your mage under the bus... :)

EF, who would you send in?
PurdueBrad

Hoops, if you want to pass me the necklace, I'll see if I can get in close enough to slide the necklace around the baddies neck. That way, if I don't kill him, he'll stay weak for the next one in.

Just how many buses ran over you for you to be gone this early?;)

We were our own worst enemy and best friend. We picked the right strategy that got us through those early rooms quickly enough but got us no extra experience to level. It went downhill from there.
I also screwed up with my trait selection, should have gone with healing.
Live and learn, or get killed and learn in this instance.

EF, I won't ask you any more questions for now ... that one was meant to be rhetorical. Although my evil nature is dying to exploit this potential loophole, my fear of the power of the moderator quells the desire to continue discussion on your team.

dola: just saw what you may be reading into the statement that I made. It wasn't meant that there is a fast or experience choice.
I'll explain that post a little more after the game.

Hoops, whoever goes, I say we load them out with the rest of our healing potions. The "One man enters, nobody leaves line" is interesting. I think whoever goes may be fighting to the death, beyond their knockouts.
