I think George has crossed into the realms of the senile. I don't think he's still capable of what earned him his reputation.
It'd be more fun to mock the Yankees right now if I wasn't a Red Sox fan. There's a catch-22 for you. |

Don't celebrate too much, Tigers. There's still plenty of baseball left to be played...

WTF??? We fans (and the players) DESERVE to celebrate this. It's been 19 fucking years since we even made it to the playoffs. I hope the Tigers, and the fans, have a huge party tonight. I only wish my trip hadn't been delayed until monday, so I could be there right now..... |

There are few teams that I enjoy watching lose more than the Yankees, Tennessee football is the only thing that comes to mind.

Does George even consider building a team with homegrown players?
or Continue raiding the others teams players? |

That's such a glib answer, tho. It's not as if the late 90's teams won series because they were "homegrown" (myth) and the ones now because they are mercenaries. Also, it's not as if you can win with only homegrown talent. After all, Ivan Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez, Kenny Rogers, and Todd Jones are all lifelong Tigers. SI

Nothing makes my day more than a Yankees loss. Ok, there are a lot of other things that would make my day better, but I sure as hell love it when they lose.

You could make a case that this years Tigers team is built more outside the system than those Yankee championship teams. They did get players and sometimes stars to fill in. . . but Jeter, Pettite, Rivera, Williams, and Posada among others were homegrown players. And those made up a large majority of the core. Still, there is no doubt to the answer to the question above. The Yankees will continue to try and raid other rosters. We've already heard about the Soriano speculation floating around. I'd be a large sum of cash that they'll spend big to upgrade the bullpen. I don't care really, I'm just thrilled to see them lose. |

how did the Yankees loose again in the postseason? they have "the greatest clutch player in the history of baseball" leading thier team? youd think they would win when favored at least once and a while

The spin will be that he couldn't recover from ARod being a choker. It's going to be interesting to watch the NY media pummel ARod. They are going to blame one man for the "greatest lineup" in history failing miserably three games in a row. |

The homegrown talent on the Tigers that I know of are Fernando Rodney, Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya of the pitchers.
Omar Infante, Brandon Inge, Ramon Santiago and Curtis Granderson are the position players. Not sure how this compares with other teams but thats 7 out of 25. |

Only transaction listed by Baseball-Reference is Drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 2nd round of the 1998 amateur draft. Player signed June 27, 1998 He isn't Brad Ausmus or Doug Brocail or Todd Jones where they like to flip flop back and forth ![]() |

I'm pretty psyched for the Tigers fans who have been there all along - since '87 and '84 at least. This must be an amazing day.

I was at tonights game. Best experience of my fucking life. Unreal. Totally unreal. As someone who was there for all of 2003, this is vindication. I am only 21 so I wasn't around for 84 and barely remember 87. All I remember is losing. I can't even tell you what it feels like right now. Total amazement and shock.

but wasn't he like in rookieball at that point or something? i think you have to leave "homegrown" open to interpertation...what % of players even reach the majors (let alone stick there for say...3 years) with the club who drafted them? |

I think he was in A Ball but im not positive. I agree that homegrown can = players that achieve their first big league appearance with a club. Most of the time homegrown = drafted players though. I think that kinda sucks because it discounts all trades teams make when they are selling near July 31. |
