Sandlot Dreams The 1993 New York Yankees Franchise on MLB The Show 20

A new hot shot 3B prospect has emerged in the Yankees farm system down in Fort Lauderdale Florida. A 21 year old kid named Michael Herzberg has been tearing up A and AA ball something fierce and the Yankees have decided to call him up.

Standing 5’11 and 175 pounds he does not look imposing. However this left handed hitting 3B has what GM Gene Michael calls “the smoothest most natural left handed swing I have ever seen”. It is a perfect fit for (Old) Yankee Stadium and we see a bright future for this kid. But not only can he hit and hit for average and power, he can run. Boy can he run. And he has a cannon for an arm. “A 5 tool” prospect Michael’s said. Hailing from Miami Beach and going to school in North Miami Beach and then off to college at Stanford. He was drafted in his Sophomore year and went straight to Fort Lauderdale and simply tore apart the league. Playing with other great prospects like Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Brien Taylor and a host of others he simply is ready for The Show.

Join me on my personal journey as I play out my Sandlot Dreams with JMyers/Jethrotull’s brilliant full 90 man 1993 roster in this multi year franchise.

We play the game with a totally clean screen.
HOF Classic Pitching and Directional Hitting.

Check out my MLB 20 Slider thread for a full description of our settings and approach.

We also stream just about every single game on my twitch channel (live and available to watch on demand). We play every pitch, every inning.

We will update here every two weeks with series recaps, news and notes around the league as well as player stories.

I am really looking forward to this amazing franchise and hope you all enjoy reading the articles we will post.

I will reserve 2 other spots on the front page to keep a franchise diary and franchise news feed as well as an off-season feed, so it is easy to simply read the front page to get all your updates and also see the history of the league unfold.

Welcome to Sandlot Dreams The 1993 Yankees Franchise!!!

1993 Yankees Year 1 News Wire

March/April News Wire Year 1 (1993)

The Yankees come into 1993 with Pennant hopes. GM Gene Michael feels great about the team he has assembled and with the infusion of rookie sensation Michael Herzberg at 3B he thinks it may be enough to push them over the top in a very competitive A.L. East. The defending champion Toronto Blue Jays remain pretty much intact and will be very tough. Also the Orioles have a good squad.

Let’s take a look at the Yankees Opening Day Depth Chart.....

New York Yankees Depth Chart - 1993
  • Catcher
  • Mike Stanley
  • Matt Nokes
  • First Base
  • Don Mattingly
  • Jim Leyritz
  • Second Base
  • Pat Kelley
  • Mike Gallego
  • Third Base
  • Michael Herzberg
  • Wade Boggs
  • Shortstop
  • Spike Owen
  • Mike Gallego
  • Left Field
  • Danny Tartabull
  • Dion James
  • Center Field
  • Bernie Williams
  • Dion James
  • Right Field
  • Paul O'Neil
  • Gerald Williams
  • Starting Pitcher
  • Jimmy Key
  • Melido Perez
  • Jim Abbott
  • Orlando Hernandez
  • Scott Kamieniecki
  • Frank Tannana
  • Relief Pitcher
  • Paul Assenmacher
  • Bobby Munoz
  • Paul Gibson
  • Steve Howe
  • Closer
  • Steve Farr
  • Lee Smith
  • Designated Hitter
  • Wade Boggs
  • Danny Tartabull

According to manager Buck Showalter Wade Boggs will play 3B as well as DH. Rookie Michael Herzberg will also be playing a lotto 3B but also can play any of the OF positions as well as DH. Pat Kelly and Mike Gallego are in a bonafide platoon at 2B. Veteran Spike Owen had a tremendous Spring Training and will be the Yankees starting SS. In the OF Rising star Bernie Williams get’s the nod in CF but expect Dion James to get plenty of AB’s as well. In LF veteran power hitter Danny Tartabull looks to have a big power season at the plate. In RF Stud Paul O’Neil is firmly entrenched. 1B Don Mattingly easily held his hold at the 3 spot as Kevin Mass was optioned down to AAA. Jim Leyritz plays ultity man at 1B and occasionally catcher. Speaking of the backstop we have a platoon between Mike Stanley and Matt Nokes in 1993. Both veteran catchers will split time throughout the season.

The Pitching staff is pretty set in the starting rotation but the bullpen remains a big question mark heading into Year 1. Although Rich Monteleone, Mike Witt, and Sterling Hitchcock were sent down after Spring Training they very well may find themselves back up with the big club if this group does not hold up it’s end of the bargain.

And of course the Yankees have some really high end prospects he should make big impacts in the coming years.

Derek Jeter
Mariano Rivera
Jorge Posada
Andy Pettitte
Bob Wickman
Ruben Rivera
John Wettland
Hideki Matsui
Hideki Irabu
Ramiro Mendoza

The Yankees open the season in Baltimore and then head to Tampa. They will then head home to face the Blue Jays and Orioles again before heading out on the road to Oakland.
