A CH2k8 Coach Legacy - The Life and Times of Tyrell Coley

Hamilton, NY -- Colgate University Athletic Director David Roach announced today that head basketball coach Emmett Davis was stepping down from his position after 12 years on the Raiders' sidelines. Davis has a 156-191 (.450) record as head coach at Colgate, the only school he has spent his coaching career at. Replacing Davis as head coach will be Tyrell Coley, a former high school varsity basketball coach at Thomas Edison High School in Queens, NY. Coley, while young (25 years old), has already built a name for himself in his four years at Edison, as the Inventors has made their way to the NYC A Division Championship in the last two seasons, winning once. He also has led the Inventors to three Queens Boro championships during his time. Only time will tell if Coley's skills will transfer to the college scene and prove he is truly ready for the rigors of D-I basketball.

"I am very humbled to be asked to take over here at Colgate." Coley said. "New York is a great basketball city and I know that the program here has what it takes to evolve as one of the better teams in the state, and eventually the country. The only place we want to go from here is up."

Colgate is coming off a 10-19 (6-8) season, finishing sixth in the eight team Patriot League. The schools only has two NCAA Tournament appearances in its history, making the tournament in the 1995 and 1996 seasons. They were bounced out in the first round on both occasions, losing to Kansas and UConn respectively.

If you want a good read about the league you're in (Patriot League), read The Last Amatuers. It's a pretty good book, and he writes a decent amount about Colgate and Emmett Davis (who you're replacing).

Good luck. Patriot League should be pretty competitive, at least early on with a weak roster.

I'll definitely see if I can pick up a copy of the book - I can never turn down a good basketball book. I really don't know anything about the Patriot League, so it should be interesting learning my way around the conference. My original choice was to use Fordham, but either way it'll be a challenge.

            October 23, 2010
Interview done by Cameron Harris (fictional)

With Midnight Madness come and gone last night, it's officially time for basketball here at Colgate University. The Raiders have high expectations for the upcoming season, despite the inexperienced youth laden throughout the team. The youth can even be found in the coaching staff, as 25-year old Tyrell Coley has replaced Emmett Davis as head coach of the boys basketball team. Coley hope to pick up where Davis left off and push Colgate to become one of the tougher teams in the Patriot League over the upcoming seasons.

Harris: Coach Coley, coming into Colgate with no prior college coaching experience, do you feel at all intimidated by the rigors of what college basketball brings each season?

Coley: I don't feel intimidated at all. Basketball is basketball, no matter what level you play it at. The only difference between coaching here and my previous coaching position is that I have better players on the team [laughs]. At the same time, the rest of the competition around the conferences have better players too, so it comes down who executes the most. I hope that we will become one of the teams that executes what we need to do the most, and the wins will come from there.

Harris: What are you expectations for the upcoming season?

Coley: To be competitive. I can't put a number on how many wins I want to have this season, because I honestly want to win every game we go out and play. As long as we play good defense night in and night out, we should be a competitive ball club. I believe the wins will increase as a result.

Harris: In the time you've spent with the team, what do you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of the squad?

Coley: Our strengths would definitely have to be our hustle and defense. These boys give 110% day in and day out and that's what you need a team to do. They play as a team, and from top to bottom of the roster we have players who give it all for one another. That's what you need from a team.

As for weaknesses, I think our size could be a problem against bigger teams. We only have three players over 6'8", so I can see a bigger team trying to abuse a size advantage. But of course we focused on that during our practices and we know what to do should the time come. We made it a note to make our weaknesses one of our strengths.

Harris: Thanks for your time Coach, and good luck in the upcoming season.

            Coley: Thank you.

November 9, 2010 - Hempstead, NY - Mack Sports Complex
                        (0-0) AT (0-0)

                        First Half
In Coach Tyrell Coley's first collegiate game, the Colgate Raiders came out strong against the Hofstra Pride. After scoring the opening bucket, Colgate went on an 11-0 run early to take a 16-6 lead. The Raiders led by as much as 17 points, but Hofstra closed the half on a 8-2 run to go into the locker rooms down 34-21.

The Pride shot just 30% in the first half, and were 0-for-5 from behind the arc. Nathan Lester led the Pride with 6 points, while Chad Johnson led the Raiders with 9.

                        Second Half
Hofstra came out strong to open the second half, cutting Colgate's lead down to five points just five minutes after halftime. Colgate struggled mightily holding the ball, turning the ball over 13 times in the game and allowing Hofstra to make it a 52-48 game with just over seven minutes left.

Hofstra continued to chip away at the game, getting Colgate to play along with their gameplan as they tied the game at 54 with four and a half left to play. Coach Coley called a timeout and in the huddle, told his team to slow down the tempo and play there game.

Colgate would go on to end the game on 6-0 run and open the season with a win.

                        Final: Colgate 60, Hofstra 54

Coach's Comments: "I'm proud at how we handled ourselves on the road and I'm glad we got the win. It wasn't a perfect performance, namely the problems we had with the turnovers, but we did enough to get the W and we know what we need to improve on. And hey, we can say we're undefeated [laughs]."

Thanks, I'm glad I managed to win. I played some girls earlier on MOP in exhibition mode and was getting killed. I was a little worried when I was strolling over Hofstra, but then I almost gave them back the game. I like the settings/sliders I have set up, which is rare for me lol.

As for the tables, I may tweak what I have a little, so that I would need any HTML for it. Whenever I make a table here, there's always a huge space around it that I have to fix, but I already know what I can to fix that without constantly editing it.
