What can Brown do for you? (CH2k8)

    3-28-11 - Providence, RI

After 3 disappointing seasons under Jesse Agel where Brown never reached past 11 wins in a season (31-56 in the 3 year span), Brown thought it was time for a new coaching change.

After 3 solid weeks of interviews, Brown has decided on Colby Rogers, 38, who previously was the 17U head coach for the Rhode Island Hawks. Rogers has helped many players realize their goal and go to college to play basketball.

Among those were Billy Baron, Rhode Island; Nick Pendergast, Temple; Rod Odom, Vanderbilt ; Tyler Olander; UCONN ; and even current Brown big man, Andrew McCarthy (JR).

"I am extremely excited for the oppurtunity to coach at this amazing school" said Rogers, "I cannot wait to come in turn this program around."

Brown has not had a winning season since the 07-08 campaign where they lost in the first round of the CBI to Ohio. That season, the Bears won 10 out of their last 12 games.

"This team is a very interesting team that I've inherited. Almost everyone is a decent shooter and they are very smart. We have smart passers at every position and our 4s are fairly quick. We do have a lot of work to do on the defensive end though" said coach Rogers, "We will run a Princeton offense and run a lot of defenses that work to our advantage. Do not surprised to see us play strong in a lot of tough games."

      Starters:

      #11 Joe Sharkey - PG - Fr - 6'1 181 lbs:
Strengths: Decent shooter, solid passer, good defender, fairly quick
Weaknesses: Terrible ball-handler, Not strong at all
Overall: Very average player. Does about everything

      #1 Christian Gore - SG - Fr - 6'2 195 lbs:
Strengths: Decent shooter, good passer for a 2, average defender, Good at attacking the basket
      Weaknesses: Not athletic, bad ball-handler

Strengths: Best shooter on the team, very good passer for a 4, athletic for and Ivy League power forward

      #35 Andrew McCarthy - C - Jr - 6'8 215 lbs:
Strengths: Great passer for big man, good mid-range game
      Weaknesses: Bad post defender

      Strengths: Good shooter, decent passer

      Strengths: Good mid-range
      Weaknesses: N/A
Overall: He is the definiton of Average Player

      Weaknesses: Bad Post Defender
Overall: He is a very smart player and will also fit right into Rogers' system

      #2 Josh Biber - SF - So - 6'5 185 lbs:

With Brown, probably. Maybe not this tough every year, but I'll schedule it tough with Brown. The main thing is since there is no conference tournament in the IVY League, I need all the competition I can get before the conference season starts. The non-conference is truly a preseason for me.

BROWN GIVES SYRACUSE ALL THEY CAN HANDLE

11-9-11 - Syracuse, NY: Tucker Halpern, junior, scored 22 points which was good enough for game high. Brown had 6 more assists than Syracuse and shot a higher percentage from the floor. The only problem for Brown was they didn't score more points than the Big Orange.

"I am really proud of my team today" said Rogers in his opening statement in the press conference, "Even though we lost, we left it all on the floor. Even though our defense was very suspect tonight, we still fought hard. Syracuse is a very good team and they will go far in the tournament this season."

Brown, to everyone's surprise, kept it close for most of the game. They even had the lead for a good portion of the first half. Syracuse, however, shot lights out hitting 9 of 14 3 pointers and forced 14 turnovers.

"I'm pretty dissapointed at the final outcome" said Halpern who was 8-18 shooting, "Even though most expected this to be a blowout, it became obvious it wasn't and I wish we could have left here with a W."

Asked on how it felt to be coaching at the D1 level, Rogers said it was very exciting and he couldn't wait to do it again in Ann Arbor against Michigan.

It's this year's season (didn't put that info in.. changed it) so Cuonzo Martin is the head coach and Trae Golden is the best rated player at 74.

For some reason the rankings are really messed up i.e. UT (80) is #21 and Vandy (88) is unranked to begin the year.

BROWN TAKES MICHIGAN TO THE BUZZER IN ANN ARBOR
11-11-11: It's November 11, 2011 and Colby Rogers almost got his wish today. The Brown Bears stood toe to toe with the Michigan Wolverines all the way to the final buzzer.

"I honestly can't believe we hung on throughout the game" stated Rogers, "If you are a basketball fan, that was a great college basketball game."

Even though Brown played Michigan very tough, Rogers didn't claim his team to have played the perfect game.

"They shot 28 free throws and we shot 33 3-pointers. If we continue to do that, we will not continue to be in games and we won't win anytime soon" said Rogers in the press conference.

Sean McGonigil, backup point guard for Brown has made a loud case for starting after another double digit performances with 5 3s, racking up 15 points.

"I'm not going to sit and complain saying that I should start over Joe" said McGonigil, "The kid is a very solid point guard and both of us will do whatever it takes to win the Ivy League."

When asked about the point guard situation, Rogers had this to say, "Why do I start [Joe] Sharkey over [Sean] McGonigil? Sharkey is more athletic and plays better defense. Besides, Sean is getting good minutes and will continue to get solid minutes."

One thing that Coach Rogers can be proud of is holding Tim Hardaway to 4-17 shooting.

Overall, Brown once again went toe to toe and they look to get their first win against Rhode Island this wednesday.

Just to throw this out there, I think I figured out why I got so close in a couple games I shouldn't have. It should be more realistic here on out.

                            Blowout in Home Opener

11-14-11: The only exciting part about the cross-state game between Brown and Rhode Island was the pre-game warm-ups when Pizzitola Center had a near sellout. Unfortunately for the Bears fans, they did not get their money's worth.

"I am very dissapointed in how our team played tonight" said a very frustrated Colby Rogers, "We took bad shots from the get-go and we continued to take bad shots throughout the game. Our defense was awful to say the least."

In the beginning of the second half, what was an 11 point lead turn quickly into 20 points. Nikola Malesevic scored 11 straight points for Rhode Island including 3 3-pointers.

"For whatever reason we couldn't stop him those first couple minutes of the second half" said Halpern, who was held to 5-17 shooting.

Rogers made it a point to not be so shot happy, and his point was proven tonight.

"I told my guys that if we keep living by the 3, we will die by the 3. We shot 1-15 from 3. We lost by 22. You do the math."

Where they missed a lot of their 3s, they did; however, make up for it on the free throw line shooting a perfect 17-17.

"It was our poor defensive play that lost the game for us" said Taylor Wright, "I take a lot of the responsibilty for the defensive end. I struggled tonight on defense."

"All we can do now is go back and watch the film and prepare for Northwestern next week. It's time to put this game behind us."
