Re: Paving Their Road to Success: The Legacy of Coach Moon

Southland Conference Tournament 2010-2011 Preview
Quarterfinals:

#1 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. #8 Texas State
The Islanders are in the same spot they've been in for the last three years, on top of standings after a dominant showing throughout conference play. Their big men Watt and Beckwith have been here before and just like last year expect them to come through. On the other hand they vs Texas State, a nondescript group who fortunately for them managed the #8 seed in a terrible down year for the Southland. No questions asked the Islanders advance from this one.
WINNER: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

#4 Northwestern State vs. #5 Sam Houston State
Being that these teams are the respective #4 and #5 seeds expect this game to be close. Northwestern State has leaned on their senior point guard Dominic Knight all year and look to do just that in order to get by Sam Houston State. Meanwhile Sam Houston State looks to remain balanced and take what their given.
WINNER: Northwestern State

#3 UT-San Antonio vs. #6 SE Louisiana
Besides the big two UTSA has been the only team with some semblance of being able to put up a decent fight all year. Their offensive attack stems from the dominating play of center Russ Permenter and eventually working the ball around from there. With SE Louisiana relatively undersized inside (both PF and C are 6'7) expect for Permenter to get going fast.
WINNER: UT-San Antonio

#2 Central Arkansas vs. #7 Nicholls State
It might seem like someone screwed up the program, but the UCA and Nicholls State once again meet in the playoffs. Unfortunately for those dreaming of last year's thriller, it's not happening this year. the Colonels might've surprised the Bears during the regular season, but it's the playoffs, and the Colonels are a shell of what they have been. Look for the Bears to dominate inside starting with Shimokawa and Samabaly. In the end the Bears will advance to the semifinals.
WINNER: Central Arkansas

Southland Conference Tournament 2010-2011 Recap

Quarterfinals Featured Story and Headlines:

"Not Able to Close the Door? Now That's a Scary Thought"
In a game many expected to be completely one-sided it seemed all but. Central Arkansas never showed anything special, and even worse neither did the nine win Colonels.
"Definitely not how we planned to start off the tournament. The boys from Nicholls State definitely deserve credit for keeping it close but we'll definitely have some stuff to fix before tomorrow night."
-Coach Nicholas Moon (UCA)
UCA's star guard Elgrace Randle had a very uncharacteristic playoff game, finishing the night with only 10 points and two assists, these numbers don't look even that good next to the three turnovers and 4-13 from the floor stats though.
"Definitely had an off night tonight, it happens. I'll make sure to correct it for tomorrow night though.
-PG Elgrace Randle (UCA)
Luckily for the Bears they did manage to spread the ball around fairly well. Minus SG Will Capel (9 pts.) All starters reached double figures in points, with center Duncan Shimokawa carrying most of the scoring load, dropping 23. This balanced attack helped fend off an opportunistic Nicholls State team that never trailed by more than six points the entire game up until the final few minutes. The tournament favorite Bears steal this one 75-66, and will face the #3 UT-San Antonio Roadrunners tomorrow night in the semifinals.

Headlines From the Other Games
"Next. Islanders dominate Texas State 104-80"

"Barnburner. Demons outlast Bearkats in 101-98 shootout."

"Proving They Belong. #3 Roadrunners barge into champ talks after 92-63 win."

Southland Conference Tournament 2010-2011 Preview
Semifinals:

#1 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. #4 Northwestern State
If the quarterfinals proved anything it's that there are arguably only three teams that have a chance at taking down the Southland. The last team out in this four team semifinal? The Demons of Northwestern State. Despite maintaining their fiery offense from years past they once again proved they don't have a defense that can hold teams to reasonable numbers. This will prove deadly for the Demons who face the Islanders, a team who can take an all out offensive barrages on some nights, but consistently have shown the ability to hold teams silent on the scoring end. In the end this is very bad news for the Demons, in fact, this is season ending news for the Demons.
WINNER: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

#2 Central Arkansas vs. #3 UT-San Antonio
Just the other day we were saying how the Southland was a two horse race between the Bears of UCA and the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, oh how things can change in 24 hours. In the opening round we saw a very sluggish Bears team fail to put away a very underwhelming Nicholls State team, while the Roadrunners easily cruised to the semis. Now, the preseason favorite will need to see their leaders step up, because another shaky performance by their point guard Elgrace Randle will definitely hurt the Bears tonight. In the end if the Bears get back on the right foot the Roadrunners don't have a shot, but otherwise don't count out the boys from San Antonio.
WINNER: Central Arkansas

Southland Conference Tournament 2010-2011 Recap

Semifinals Featured Story and Headlines:

"The Almost Perfect Storm"
What makes for an instant classic? An underdog, a powerhouse, a near collapse, and for that matter why not just add in overtime. Well, this game had everything, in fact, in the eyes of Coach Moon it could easily be one of the ugliest games he's been on the sideline for, but this game could easily be in the 2011 vault of Top Ten games, even the best.
"Now that it's over, I can look back on it and say I was involved in something special. But during it? It was nothing but h*ll."
-SG Will Capel (UCA)
After coming off an what many considered an iffy win the Bears needed to step up their game. If they didn't, the suddenly red hot Roadrunners could easily kill their NCAA tournament aspirations instantly. And for most of the game, that seemed like the case.
"We couldn't shoot, we couldn't pass. I don't know who's crowned us champs already but they better knock it off. San Antonio might not be as household as Arizona State and UCLA, but they'll eat us up just the same if we let them."
-Coach Nicholas Moon (UCA)
In fact, as surprising as it may sound, the Bears never held a lead, that's right, never. Mr. consistent Elgrace Randle was sporadic and all over the place, ending the night going 5-14 from the floor along with a career worst of eight turnovers. Big man Duncan Shimokawa also was a no show for the entire first half, ending it with a shocking six points. The second half was much the same, in fact, it was worse. Without singling out Randle and Shimokawa only Raimondas Feeney looked respectable for the Bears starting line up knocking down threes every time you turned around. But Feeney couldn't do it all, and trailing by 13 with only four minutes to go Coach Moon made the riskiest decision he could've made.
"I played the second line, we had nothing to lose."
-Coach Nicholas Moon (UCA)
Out comes star point guard Randle and his band of sophomore stars, in comes oft-forgotten about Oswaldo Hairston and Marcus Pillow, flanked by this year's freshman. It was a risk, a bold risk, a possible season-ending risk, but most importantly, a season-saving risk.

Hairston was sensational. freshman small forward Paulius Riggs was lights out, and four beautiful assists to freshman big man Mustafa Holcomb and the Bears were headed to overtime. the scoreboard read 72 all, the UCA Bears had another chance.
"It was nice to contribute. I won't lie and say it felt easy, I was starstruck, the arena felt suffocating. But I played inside myself and was able to find my shot."
-SF Paulius Riggs (UCA)
But the Roadrunners were hungry, and they once again busted open a lead on the Bears. Lucky for them Shimokawa came alive, and Randle started to hit his shot now and again, neither team would budge. Overtime ran it's course like any game, but with one exception, it never seemed to end and it all looked the same. The Roadrunners would strike first, and the Bears would claw back into it by the skin of their teeth, through two, three, even four more overtimes. That's right, this Southland semifinal went FIVE overtimes, and not without it's dramatics. Harding Samabaly blocked a shot at the free throw line as time expired in the third overtime. While on the other end Shimokawa stole an inbounds pass with four seconds remaining only to be blocked by the Roadrunners last line of defense, the rim. But the ball had to bounce one way, someone had to eventually give. And the fifth finally finally ended it.

Both teams were hungry now, the Bears were firing on all cylinders with a few mistakes holding them from earning a victory and saving face; all the while the Roadrunners just had to shore up their defense and prevent another comeback. But like every other period of this game things looked exactly the same, UTSA jumped out to a lead and the Bears were stuck playing catch up. Well, what changed? Look no further than captain Elgrace Randle. Along with possibly one of his worst career stat lines ever there was a silver lining, seven steals. Of those seven, he pulled off three on consecutive possessions.
"Those steals were huge, up until that point I've never felt like such a burden to my team. I just didn't have it tonight. But luckily the team had my back and I was able to step up and contribute where I could.
-PG Elgrace Randle (UCA)

For the first time all game, with 2:38 on the clock the Bears had taken a lead, their first of the entire game.
"It's crazy to think we nearly went seven whole periods of basketball and trailed the whole time. Sure we definitely didn't play our best ball. But the boys didn't quit, I was really happy with their effort all the way to the very end.
-Coach Nicholas Moon (UCA)
Finally thanks to Randle's big steals the Bears had earned a lead, and the Roadrunners just were not ready to take on the comeback role. They fought admirably, but everytime they thought they could claw back into it Feeney would drop another dagger from behind the arc, and eventually the Roadrunners were beaten, a win they knew had slipped through their fingers one too many times.

Headlines From the Other Games
"Crowned Team to Beat. After UCA wins in suspenseful fashion the Islanders follow up by obliterating Demons 128-78. "
