MARTIN, TN - After another disappointing season, the UT-Martin Skyhawks have decided to go another direction with their men's basketball team. Last year, they finished 8-23 (5-15 OVC). Attendance has hit an all-time low (average attendance was 1,890 of 7,000 max capacity) and the team morale has been terribly poor these past few seasons. After a long nationwide search the university has decided to bring in 28 year old Alexander Light. Coach Light graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA as one of the teams bench players. However, it wasn't his talents that landed him the job here at UT-Martin, it was his coaching ability. While he was at Duquesne he would help the coach strategize and even write up plays. He ran drills and occassionally would run practices if necessary. He was a natural leader to run a basketball team. Over the past 7 years after his graduation he has been the head coach of Gateway High School basketball team. He turned them from a team that struggled to win 4 games a year into a team that is always in discussion to make the PIAA State Finals. In the past few years, he has played teams such as Mater Dei and won. Tennessee-Martin is very pleased to announce him as the head coach of the men's basketball team and look forward to special things over these next few years.
