Mavericks defeat Pelicans 100-92, Cousins goes down with injury

January 25, 2022 | by NBA News

Just as DeMarcus Cousins gained some momentum heading into the fourth quarter, with already 22 points and 10 rebounds, he unluckily suffered an injury with 3 minutes left in the game. With just a 2 point lead, John Wall took over as he guided the Mavericks to victory, finishing with 25 points.

An MRI scan revealed no structural damage, as team doctors diagnosed Cousins with a sprained right knee and is expected to miss the next 2-4 weeks. With LaMarcus Aldridge already sidelined for the past 2 games due to a broken nose, Dallas will be incredibly thin in the front court. Backup center, A.J. Hammons, is expected to see more minutes in the rotation while Harrison Barnes and Serge Ibaka are likely to spend some time at the 4 and 5 position.

Meanwhile, Russell Westbrook's transition to his new team continued to be a bumpy ride as he finished with just 14 points and 5 turnovers. While his usage rate was expected to plummet, he's only averaging just 15 points per game - a far cry from last season where he averaged 27 points with the Thunder. The Pelicans are now 3-4 and they'll have to figure things fast with the season almost half way done.

From a quick glace, there are currently 5 teams tied for first place at 5-2. They are the Mavs, Rockets, T'Wolves, Warriors and Grizzlies. Kings are a close second at 5-3. On the other spectrum, the Lakers have been woeful at 1-6, with the Jazz and Thunder not far behind (2-6).

In the East, the Sixers are killing it, sitting at the top comfortably on 7-1. While the Hawks have yet to win a game so far, going 0-7.

Portland stuns Dallas at home

February 14, 2022 | by NBA News

The Trail Blazers, who came into this game missing Damian Lillard with injury, stunned the defending champs, winning 109-105.

Tony Wroten had some big shoes to fill, but he played it cool, dropping 26 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists. Meanwhile, C.J. McCollum shouldered more of the offensive load, scoring 33 points and nailing 6 treys.

Despite getting All Star, DeMarcus Cousins, back from injury, the Mavericks continued to struggle from the foul line, missing 13 shots out of 37 attempts. One could argue that the score may have been a different story had they of made the freebies. As such, Dallas will now head into the All-Star break with a 5-3 record.

2022 NBA All-Stars Announced

LeBron James and Karl-Anthony Towns will headline the NBA All Star Game, hosted in Denver on February 20, 2022. Both players were the highest vote-getters for their respective conference as per the fans, players, and media panel.

Averaging a career high 24.1 PPG so far, Towns is filling up the stat sheets with averages of 14.0 RPG and 2.3 BPG. He currently has his T'Wolves sitting at the 7th spot in the Western Conference with a 5-3 record.

Joining Towns in the front court will be Finals MVP, Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard. At the age of 33, there is no slowing down KD who is averaging a career best, 2.5 BPG, so far this season. Meanwhile, Leonard is shooting an absurd 54.5% from the field and averaging 21.6 PPG.

The West starting guards will be Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook. After a somewhat decline in percentages last season, Curry is back to his old self, shooting 51.3% from the field and scoring 28.5 PPG. On the other hand, Westbrook looks to be a shelf of his old self, averaging just 16.7 PPG - an 11 point drop from last season. One could argue that there were better options who should've taken his place but were snubbed. Namely the likes of John Wall and Damian Lillard.

Rounding out the West reserves will be Gordan Hayward, DeMarcus Cousins, and 5 first-timers in Frank Ntilikina, Dejounte Miller, Harry Giles, DeAndre Ayton, and number one overall pick Matthew Holland.

As for the East, future Hall of Famer, LeBron James will headline the East starters, posting averages of 25.6 PPG, 10.9 RPG, 6.8 APG, and a career best 2.5 BPG this season. Joining him in the front court will be Paul George (18.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 2.4 SPG), and first-timer, Joel Embiid, with averages of 24.0 PPG, 12.2 RPG, 2.4 BPG.

For the East back-court, Kyrie Irving will be starting, with averages of 30.9 PPG, 8.2 APG, 1.9 SPG. Jimmy Butler will also join him, making his 5th All-Star appearance after averaging 18.9 PPG, 5.4 RPG and 5.4 APG.

Rounding out the East reserves will be Kyle Lowry, Ben Simmons, Luka Doncic, Jonathan Isaac, Kevin Love, and first-timers, Dario Saric and Kristaps Porzingis.

Towns notches 33-20 as Timberwolves shut Mavericks down late in the fourth

February 24, 2022 | by NBA News

There was no stopping Karl-Anthony Towns tonight as he was a man possessed, scoring 33 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. He was helped by Kris Dunn who racked up 13 points, 10 assists and, a season-high, 7 steals, as the Timberwolves came up big in the clutch, outscoring the Mavericks by 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Despite his heroic efforts, Tim Hardaway Jr.'s 19 points in the fourth quarter wasn't enough as Dallas were held scoreless for the final 3 minutes of the game. The Timberwolves showed the league that they were hungry for the title as their stifling defense left the Mavericks confused and lost as they went on a 10-0 run to seal the deal.
