1970-71 Game 23 Results
15:39 left and we trail 10-11. Emerick and Morey both have early threes, but I'm feeling pretty good, because Valdosta State already has 6 fouls and an injury. So a few guys are on the bench right now, and their point guard White is banged up at 76%, and it looks like he'll continue to play.
Sanders hits a short jumper with 9:50 left and it gives us the lead 23-22 and Valdosta State calls time. We're really sharing the wealth offensively, as 6 of the 8 guys we've played have scored. Morey and Ramage, the usual culprits each have 5. Last media timeout is at 3:39, and we trail 33-38. White, despite his injury issue is killing us, sinking, I believe, 3 from beyond the arc. Both teams are hitting from long range, and I like our odds better than theirs to keep shooting that way. Their freshman point guard, Peterson hits a three at the buzzer to make the half time score: Valdosta State 49 - Appalachian State 40. The freshman has 10 points at half, just two shy of his career high. Tinker is the one destroying us inside though, he's got 14. Ramage picked up a 2nd foul right before half, but he and Conner are not having the rebounding advantage I was hoping they would. Ingrah, Bracey and Ramage lead us with 7 each. If we can tighten up the defense just a bit, we might be able to stay in it, I think we can score on them. Second media time out is at 11:07 and we trail 58-68. We've switched to man and it seems to be doing a bit better. Ramage and Bracey lead us with 11 a piece, while Morey is just 2-9 and it's time to admit he's not the best shooter to ever live and maybe he just started the season super on fire. 3:45 media timeout, we just can't get it closer than 7, and they never extend it past 12, so there just wasn't much to update, but we now trail 68-79 Conner has a double double 10-10, but it isn't as good as Tinker's 20 and 9. Morey despite his shooting woes, does have 3 boards and 6 assists the latter being a career high. But, our front line has just been destroyed by Tinker and Bailey, which is not what I thought would happen. It looked like they were going to extend the lead further than 12, but a quick flurry punctuated by back to back threes from Emerick and Bracey make the game 75-82 with 1:52 left, so it's at least a little interesting. We'll see if we can finally get it closer than 7. The answer is: No, we will not. 76% White immediately hits a three and it was over from that point on. Final score: Valdosta State 89 - Appalachian State 75. Never could come close to stopping them, and our offense was underwhelming and we still hung around the majority of the game. A few bad games from Morey has him down to just 20.1 a game. On the bright side, Bracey is averaging 16 a game in his last 3. Surprised their front line got us that badly. I guess I shouldn't be though, we have garbage interior defenders, Woodworth should have played more. Code:

Conference: Southern Location: Charleston, South Carolina 1969-70 record: 7-23 (5-11) The Citadel is an 8 prestige school that is now officially the worst rated school in the conference and one of the few in single digits in the nation, at least that is affiliated with a conference. Code:

Active guard who fills up the box score, but is a poor defender. SG: Barr, 6'1", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 6 points a game. Shoots the ball pretty well and does a good job defensively, but does not shoot very often. SF: Seng, 6'7", Senior: Started last year and averaged 11 a game. Having a pretty good year, gets to the basket and scores. PF: Fluker, 6'9", Junior: Started last year, and averaged 5 points and 6 rebounds. Rebounds and is a decent passer for a big man, but struggles to score and not a good defender. C: Bishop, 6'11", Junior: Started last year and averaged 16 points and 5 boards. Really nice offensive talent, but really stinks elsewhere Bench: Davis is a 6'2" Freshman guard with some promise, but has struggled so far this year. Carrier is a good rebounding forward, but the 6'8" sophomore doesn't do much else. Greenfield is a 5'9" freshman with a nice jump shot, but only gets 9 minutes a game. Jones is another freshman guard that might play 5-8 minutes and might hit 0-1 threes. Coach: Paul Cooper, 47 years old. 41/100/11/48, 3rd year at The Citadel, 127-181 career record. Not a very good coach or recruiter, but boy can he scout 'em. They bring back all 5 starters, so obviously some experience, but outside of their center, none of it is that scary offensively. If we contain him some, I like the chances of our guards getting some baskets. Code:

1970-71 Game 23 Results
This is the start of a very winnable stretch of games, I think we have a solid chance in 7 of them.
First media timeout at 15:24 and we lead 15-3. Emerick, Bracey and Morey all have a three pointer a piece, and Conner has 4 points, 2 boards and 2 assists but also 2 fouls. 11:02 left and we lead 23-13. Sanders and Newlin have each contributed some points off the bench, and still just Conner has more than one field goal. 3:47 left and our lead is now just 34-29. Struggling to score and The Citadel has started to hit a few baskets and get some momentum offensively, I've switched to man defense, so we'll see if it throws them off. Emerick picked up his 2nd foul. At half time, we've got a ball game: Appalachian State 41 - The Citadel 39. Our offense really seized up down the stretch and if it wasn't for a little 5 point flurry from Morey the last few minutes, we'd be trailing in this one. Our defense is just really, really bad. Morey has 10 points now, while Ramage is at 8. Bishop has 15 for the Bulldogs, and we haven't had much luck at all stopping him. We've been doubling teaming, I'll stop and see if that does anything. 15:17 left and we lead 57-46. Nice response to open the half. Ramage is up to 12 and 10, and I'll need to see how many double doubles he has this year. Morey has caught fire though and is up to 18 points, while Bishop is up 20 for The Citadel. 10:04 left, media timeout: We lead 64-51. Woodworth has been in more than usual this game, because he's got 9 points and 3 boards and 2 assists and is having one of the better games of his career. His career high in points is 11. Morey hit another three and is 5-13 from beyond the arc. Bracey fouls out with 4:25 left and we lead 71-57, I didn't catch his stat line before I replaced him and now you have to wait. It wasn't much, though. Ingram will come in who is an excellent free throw shooter, 19-23 on the season. We manage to milk the clock away with very few problems and come away with a solid victory: Appalachian State 77 - The Citadel 64. 25 points from Morey, to go with 5 boards and 5 assists.. Ramage with a strong 17 points and 14 boards. Woodworth matched his career high with 11 points. Ingram had 3 assists off the bench while Sanders really struggled. Outside of Bishop, The Citadel really struggled to score the ball. Code:

Ko is a big guard with some real skill who will be a really good guard in this league in a few years. He scores, rebounds well for a guard and will be an okay defender too. Not a good three point shooter. SG: Segarra, 6'2", Sophomore: Played 16 minutes a game last year, averaging 7 points. Decent combo guard that is expected to do too much. SF: McKnight, 6'8", Senior: Started last year and averaged 12 points a game. Doesn't shoot the three and just works mid range and in. Decent scorer, but nothing too scary. PF: Krantz, 6'8", Junior: Started last year and averaged 8 and 4.6. Bad defender with some offensive talent who gets pushed around some on the glass. C: Brown, 6'10", Freshman: Promising looking freshman who is active on the offensive glass and has a decent offensive game. Bad defender and always will be. Bench: Eggleston started last year and averaged 5 and 6, and he's a competent big man and nothing else. Numbers is another big man who has seen his playing time drop by about 9 minutes. He's a good defender and can score a little, but can't rebound at all. Hockett is a 6'7" senior wing who gets most of their reserve perimeter minutes. He can score it a little, and handles it well for a wing of his size, poor defender. Coach: Justin Jordan, 61 years old. 34/70/65/11, 60-62 career record. 4th season at College of Charleston. Okay coach that at this age probably won't move beyond this level before he retires. They are more talented than their record indicates, but they can't defend and they are pretty spotty offensively. Plus, there's no way we can be their first home win, right? They haven't won a game since January 2nd, oddly enough on the road at Valdosta State. Code:

10:04 left and we lead 30-20. Morey has really struggled, 2-7 from the field, but it hasn't mattered so far as several guys have been very efficient, but none more than Sanders who is 3-3 from the field with a three pointer and a converted and-one for 8 points in just 3 minutes.
3:32 left and we lead 40-24. Ramage has 7 points, 8 boards and 3 assists. Emerick and Morey are a combined 2-11 from three which I can't imagine will continue much longer. They hit a shot at the buzzer to cap a mini-run to make the half time score: Appalachian State 48 - College of Charleston 35. A trio of starters, Ramage, Bracey and Morey all picked up their 2nd foul during the last 3 minutes of the 1st half. I can't expect the contributions from the ancillary players again, but I have to think Emerick and Morey will wake up some in the second half and sink some baskets. 11:48 left and we lead 63-49, pretty well maintained the same lead throughout. Ramage picked up two fouls very quickly and has been sitting since the 19 minute mark. Sanders has thrown in a few more points and has 13. Morey's now 3-8 from three and has 12 points. 4:49 left and we've jumped out to an 83-61 lead. We have 4 guys with 13-15 points, Bracey, Emerick, Sanders and Morey. I call timeout to bring in Gattis and Younger who have hardly played this year, even by walk on standards . We lead 93-67 with 1:55 left. They do a fine job in polishing the game by keeping the score the exact same and we win by the final: Appalachian State 93 - College of Charleston 67. CoC just stinks. Their front line had their way with us for a while, but they just quit giving them the ball and Brown was in foul trouble most of the game. Ingram and Sanders both with excellent games off the bench, and Ingram's currently averaging 14.4 points per 30, which is 2nd best on the team. His defense is horrible, but he can score it and pass it. He's going to be a good offensive player. 13-27 from three is hard to beat. Code:

February 15th, 1971 at North Carolina Central Eagles (6-17) [5-6]
Conference: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Location: Durham, North Carolina 1969-70 record: 6-24 (4-12) A quick little non-conference jaunt; NCCU is a 14 prestige school who is coming off back to back atrocious years, and it's made their current conference record relatively good. Code:

Decent ball skills, but can't score and just isn't any good. SG: Belle, 6'2", Senior: Averaged 16 minutes a game and scored 7 points a game. Good offensive player who can pass it a little, not too bad defensively. SF: Wilson,, 6'7", Sophomore: Started last year and averaged 11 a game. Having a very strong year this season offensively. Can score at every level, and should be pretty high up in the NCCU record books by the time he's through, he's horrible defensively and on the glass though. PF: Trantham, 6'7", Junior: Played 9 minutes a game last year with an average of 1.3 points. Active on the glass and at least present defensively. C: Curcio, 6'9", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 5.4 and 6.5 last season. Good on the offensive glass, okay defender, not much offensively. Bench: Brogan is a 6'7" do nothing wing that will probably go for 12 and 8 now that I said that. Frisbee is a 6'2" freshman point guard who has had 8 starts this season. He's aggressive and should turn into a good player in the MEAC. Fuentes is a sieve defensively but can score it a bit at 6'3". Gentry is a very good defender at 6'7", and rebounds well to boot, but is a useless offensive player. Coach: Robin Keffer, 54 years old. 34/64/9/73, 78-126 career record. 1st season at NCCU. The last coach got the boot, and Keffer, an assistant at North Carolina State grabbed the job. He had been an assistant for the last 11 seasons before that he was the head coach at Harvard from 52-59. He was an assistant there before he got the job, and then oddly one after he was fired. I would like to see a situation where the new head coach makes the previous one an assistant. They are not very good, and lack any real offensive punch outside of Wilson. But, we're at their place and my defense stinks, so crazier FBCB things have happened for sure. Code:

1970-71 Game 25 Results
A very bad start, I call timeout with 16:37 left and we trail 4-14. Not a lot going on offensively for us and Wilson has 7 quick points for the Eagles.
11:10 left and we trail 19-29. It was 12-27 at one point, so we've made some progress and hope is still there. Morey finally hit his first three pointer and is 1-4 from beyond the arc for the game. 7:41 left, we trail 23-36, their backup Frisbee is killing me and has 12 points, at least a couple of three pointers in there too. They are shooting out of their minds, and I think it will regress some and we just need to stay within striking distance before half. Emerick picked up his 2nd foul. We get it down to 6, but they snap off a 5-0 run and I call timeout after a Wilson 3 makes it 30-41 with 5:29 left. We are within striking distance at halftime, it's a pretty long strike though. The score is: North Carolina Central 53 - Appalachian State 42. They have been ridiculous from the field, 59.5% and we've managed to stick around despite 9 turnovers as well. The first 5 minutes will be pretty big, we are flat out better than them, and I think we're capable of making this deficit up in a hurry if our defense figures things out. Emerick hits a three with 14:37 left and NCCU calls timeout because the score is 64-59. We just sort of tread water for most of the first 5+ minutes before a quick explosion gets the lead down to 5. Morey has 13 to lead us, but it is on 10 shots. Ramage has 11 and 8. Ingram nails a three pointer and ties the game at 66 with 12:06 left and NCCU calls another timeout right before the media timeout they are so desperate to stop the game. We've heated up a lot and they've slowed down quite a bit as well and it is a brand new ball game. A very long stretch with no play stoppage and a whole lot of offense and when it all shakes out we lead 85-80 with 5:02 left. Ramage has been destroying them, he's 9-10 from the field, 3-4 from the line for 21 points and 12 rebounds to boot. Emerick also had a nice run and has 12 points and 5 assists for the game. A lot of tired players were out there, so I have Ramage, Bracey and Emerick all on the bench currently resting. There will be another media timeout pretty quick. Woodworth, coming off a great game, hasn't come in yet. But, will now to play defense for about a minute and a half hopefully. Morey sinks a three pointer to give us a lead, but Belle hits a three and is fouled by Emerick, he then hits the free throw to convert the 4 point play and with 2:39 left we lead 95-94 and we just can't shake them. Ramage is at 21 and 12. Morey is up to 19 points and has 4 assists too. Emerick with that last foul has 4. 1:24 left, same story, can't shake them and after two Wilson free throws that get him up to 25 points, we lead 101-100. Emerick has fouled out and I've decided to go with Ingram over Newlin, since Ingram's got 10 points in just 11 minutes, but I'll try to sub offense for defense too. NCCU is at 56% from three, I'll be interested to see their final totals. We've gotten up to 56.5% from the field total. A couple of Ramage free throws gets us up by three, but a Wilson three off of an offensive rebound ties it all up at 103 with 34 seconds left. I call timeout, and I decide to put on the use clock setting, and hope we still put up a shot. I just don't want them to shoot too early and give them a chance and worse case scenario we head to OT. Morey puts up a three pointer with about 5 seconds left, misses it, but Ramage is there under the basket for the rebound and quick put back at the buzzer to give us the win. Final score: Appalachian State 105 - North Carolina Central 103. A barnburner of a game with some NBA like box scores in the stat lines with the pace and efficiency on the court. Ramage finishes with 27 and 13, none more important than the last two points and last rebound. He was 11-12 from the field, tough to beat. Morey ended up with 22 points and 6-12 from beyond the arc. Woodworth in his one minute had a rebound and two assists. Emerick and Sanders both with very nice contributions. 15-27 from three for NCCU, our defense has really been playing bad. The 1-3-1 zone magic I thought I had is long gone. Code:
