You can't, the system must be on to charge the controller. You can also charge the controller from any USB port and charging on average takes about an hour.

I charge mine on my computer. It's easier to manage when I'm home and not playing. Playing with it plugged in is not an option for me...Too far away.

I use the ac wall charger that came with my iPod. Computer is also a good way.
