Is Last Gen Your Last Console?

After seeing a few comments regarding OS'ers being fed up with the current gaming landscape and deciding that the ps3/360 era was the final stop for gaming for them, i looked at my situation and realized I am there as well.

The innocence of gaming is gone.
Between the patches, the 'always connected' online blitz, and where I am the broken promises, the broken features and for me the gimped ps4 in comparison to the ps3, I felt its time to stand where I am, find some sports games I like from last gen and enjoy them.

I love playing retro games and I have a to of ps classics d/l'ed from the psn store, i have my movies, music, photos all on my hard drive.
    I am content with that.
THis past year i clamored for the simpler days on home console gaming but those are long gone.

Nothing like loading up Castlevania Symphony of the Night on psn and just pure playing.
Maybe its the 50 gb installs, the waiting 5 minutes for game updates, then finally playing and then the game freezes but in any event to quote Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon, 'I'm getting too old for this ish.'

As a mostly sports gamer I dont see the games getting any better outside of features. Do i need a full halftime show if the tradeoff is season stats being completely screwed?

I think the last stand of the old school gaming console was the original wii.
It didnt have a user account to sign into. No patches. No online barrage. Just fun games [and some crappy ones too].

The ps3 has enough to keep me going for a long while.

Its been a fun long ride buying some of these systems through the years, but I have to step away. 44 years old I've been waiting much of that time for them to fix the freezing in Madden.

Nope. Have a Xbox One and it's a great voice controlled streaming box, along with playing awesome games. Makes it so I don't have to waste money on a gaming PC that sits there unused most of the time.

My wife loves the voice commands too, even in just simple situations (great to change channels).

I tend to play single player games more now (though I do have Madden 15), and I just get mostly old stuff with a new game occasionally to save money. Still enjoy the new style games. Not as big of a fan of the older games or the indie style games. My time is limited so I enjoy the large scale games that feel more real instead.

I can't imagine having to miss out on The Witcher 3, Batman: Arkham Knight, or The Order. Hell, those are only games coming out in Spring 2015.

No I have PS4 and Xbox One. I think this might be my last gen if the life cycle is the usual 8-10 yrs.

PS4 is my gaming platform and Xbox One is everything else. I swear sometimes I forget it plays games!! Lol! I accidentally clicked on Killer Instinct and noticed it updated to season 2 and TJ Combo was available to play!

Nope. I'm not interested in playing old games while my friends play the latest and greatest.

Nintendo's inability to keep up with technology is not a benefit, it's a detriment to their platforms.

"I love playing retro games" - you are in the minority and this is the basis for what allows this idea to fester to begin with. Retro games are a genre/theme, not a replacement.

I'm stuck with consoles until EA Sports releases a PC version of Madden NFL. I'd buy a PC version of Madden and abandon consoles in a heartbeat should that ever come into existence, but until then I'm still here.

What you see as a loss of innocence, I see as the medium maturing and beginning to fully take advantage of the available technology, infrastructure, and human resources to create new and compelling experiences which weren't possible ten years ago.

That's a fair point - it all depends on what you're interested in and what you're looking to get out of gaming.

For me, I'm mostly in the same place as the OP, though perhaps for different reasons. Video games for me are primarily a group activity; I don't really like single player or online games, so everything I buy is based on local multiplayer. While I wouldn't go so far as to suggest that's disappearing or even that it's only Nintendo doing it, it definitely doesn't get the same emphasis that it used to. I'm well aware that I'm in the minority, but all the same, it doesn't make me want to run out and pick up the latest thing, necessarily.

I do have a Wii U, but I assume we're not counting that as next gen I'm open to getting a PS4, but to date there hasn't been a single game that interests me that's not also available on Steam. (I do also tend to be picky; I only got a PS3 this month and so far have only found one game I definitely want to own.) The main reason I moved into console gaming over PC gaming other than local multiplayer was so I wouldn't have to deal with installation times, patches and whatnot - as the home consoles act more and more like PCs, and as Steam games allow controller and split screen support more and more frequently, I feel less and less inclined to want to own them, since I'm going to have a PC no matter what.

I'm also thinking this might be the generation of the uncanny valley, at least for me. Even MLB The Show 13 on PS3 made me a little uncomfortable.

Hell no. I expect when I'm old and immobile in the nursing home gaming will be a great pastime. I'll sit there in my diaper racking up head shots, bombing 3 pointers, scoring touchdowns and holing out bunker shots until I drop.

                      Hardly.
Started before consoles and when I die I'm positive I'll have the newest console available in my house.

The past was fun and will always have great memories but no way I could feed off that for my fix.
I want to remember those games from when I played them then.
To be fair if we had the type of media circus we have now, back then, I'd bet 1/2 the games most remember as great times gaming would have been gutted and torn apart etc..

I'm excited where the next gen or 2 goes and what types of games we'll see.

No way this is my last console as long as I am around to grace this place we call Earth.

Will be gaming until the end of time.

You probably just need some time away from the hobby. I was jaded about it for ten years and then I saw and advertisement in Fry's Electronics for NBA Street Volume 2. The rest as they say is history.

Idk about ever, but I def have more than enough for now with the combo of PS3/older consoles/PC.
