what is a red shirt? is that like a practice squad or something?

When you redshirt somebody, it means you sit them out for the entire year, but they don't lose a year of eligibility.

It is a player who can practice and improve but can't play in any of the games that year. The benefit of redshirting is that a redshirt doesn't lose a year of eligibility.
