Speaking of which, is it actually possible to execute an option pass this year? In past years, the play takes so long to develop that I'm usually on my butt by the time the passing icons come up.

THe option pass does work this year, I run it once a game most of the time.

As far as passing icons...press A/X after hiking.

You have to hit the A button (Xbox) like the old days. So A will not be sprint right away on the option pass, or HB option pass play, until you cross the line.
