Some Canadians are familiar with the terms freshman, sophomore, junior and senior but that's from watching US college sports. We simply don't use those terms to describe our level of achievement either in high school or university. If someone ask a university student where they go, they would most likely respond, "McMaster, 2nd year" or something like that. You would almost never hear people use terms like sophomore or junior when describing themselves.

For sports, some areas use freshman or even midget to describe grade 9 basketball. Junior basketball is for grades 9/10 and senior ball is for grades 11/12 in Ontario. The terminology that Americans use is simply not used that much in Canada.

in high school we have 5 years. after you can go to college (it's called cegep) for 2 years (or 3 for a specialization course). After we go to university. Like rudyjuly2 said, we don't have any specific terms when we get to university. It's usually in what year your at in your'e program.

I went to high school for 5 years (we have grade 13 depending on what province you live in) but since then, Ontario has dropped grade 13 and only has four grades. I think a lot of the western provinces only have four grades - I know Manitoba only has four but this is inconsistent across Canada and certainly different than the U.S.

I should also mention that college and university are separate. You can do both but most don't. College is more for trades and maybe is more comparabe to a junior college program in the U.S. University is four years and more about an education than specializing in trades.
