No, the only way to 100% certain is to look at the tray itself.

There is one thing you can do, though. The following site is a database where people are reporting their experiences with the various types of 360 drives:

http://360drives.com/list

You can sort the info by a variety of categories, including type of drive and lot #. By looking at the lot #, you can generally determine which drive was more commonly used to produce that lot's units.

Does anyone who has been getting DDEs with NCAA on their 360 have an Intercooler attached? I'm wondering if it's a heat buildup issue with the drive working harder that causes it to fail.

Just a quickie: I read somewhere about wiping the NCAA discs with rubbing alcohol (might've been on this site even). So I have two 360's in the house, one that's totally fried from this game, and one that's not reading only the NCAA game when it starts to load the game (the screen that shows the controller layout pre-game).

The rubbing alcohol worked amazingly well. I tried it on another copy of NCAA that was giving me problems (I rented it from BBV to try a different disc) and it too now wroks like a charm. Give it a try. You can't really do any harm. The thing doesn't work anyways, so this is a cheap option.

I have the intercooler fan and still get lock ups during game play... usually after a play when the stadium view pans or right when my team breaks the huddle.

The results here have pretty much mirrored those of the original poll over at Utopia, by far the the majority of user reporting dde's are Samsung owners.

The really interesting thing to me is that, just like Utopia, there are almost as many Samsung owners not having problems. I have read that there are multiple types of firmware being used for each of the various types of drive, perhaps that's the common denominator here?
