Help a newbie get better

Let me start by saying i'm not a football newbie, just to console football. I only dabbled in last years version, but for the most part i'm new to football gaming.

So i started out first playing on All American. Needless to say i had no chance. Defensively i was ok, but i couldn't move the ball for nothing. So i then switched to Varsity for a few games and had a little better luck, but still was waaaaay behind. Again, defensively i was doing ok but i still couldn't move the ball. I lost most Varsity games by a couple touchdowns and i was shutout.

So i then played two games on Freshman and it was waaay too easy. Both games i quit at halftime because i was ahead too much and it was too easy. So i then went back to Varsity for 2 games and again lost because i couldn't move the ball at all.

So i'm really needing some tips and advice here. I realize it takes practice, but i've made no progress on Varsity. I can't complete a pass and run the ball minimally. Defensively i'm ok, i usually only give up 17 or so points. But offensively i suck BIGTIME.

I'm using Corso for play calling and really concentrating on throwing to open receivers. However, i still can't move the ball. Nothing.

So can anyone give me some general tips to improve and move the ball? After a dozen or so games, the frustration is starting to set in.

Re: Help a newbie get better

you state that you are into football.. yes?

Just use common football sense... run run pass.. run run pass.. etc

You have to mix it up, you're not going to throw the long ball for 30 yards on every play.. (especially in 08).. establish a run game, it'll open up the passing lanes.

I just have some generic advice. Run the ball. Don't hit turbo behind the line and be sure to look for open holes. When you become successful running, the passing game will open. Use short passes and screens. Go underneath the coverage and use the whole field. Once you get the short and moderate passes going, it opens the deep ball. Learn how to spot zone and man defense and find the mismatch.

Also, play the Tug of War minigame. It's great for practice.

and by turbo do you mean the R2 button on the PS3? don't use that until you've gotten pass the line?

Correct. Getting your running game down should come first. You need to beable to see your blockers and holes opening up. Before you snap the ball, look at the defense, get a feel for who's going to be blocking who. Flip the run play if it plays to your advantage. When you begin to see how a play should develop, the game plays alot slower for you.

Also correct on the turbo. If you use it too soon, defenders will get off their blocks that much faster.

Re: Help a newbie get better

The most valuable piece of advice I got when I picked up football videogames a few years ago for the first time since college (long ago enough) was that you've been given. Don't turbo run until you know where your hole is and are going to hit it. Otherwise, you just run into the congestion at the line. This is especiallly true when you have linemen pulling. They're not as fast as you at HB, so you gotta be patient. Once you are disciplined enough to watch the plays develop in that manner, the game really does start to unfold for you in a way that you just develop your own skill set.

Then, of course, for passing you have to be able to read defenses. Again, it's something you learn the more you watch intently how defenses react and adjusting accordingly.

Best think you can do is fire up a dynasty on the lowest level that challenges you and JUST KEEP PLAYING! It'll get easier.

Re: Help a newbie get better

Try lots of single back formations, use dives, slams and off tackle runs to get yourself into a running game. Don't use speed burst right away, see the whole and then burst through it, then let off if you need to and find your next seam. Be patient and don't be afraid to run the ball even if you're getting stopped. Keep on it and you'll be moving the ball down the field in no time.

Change up your snap count. Don't snap the ball on the first hut. Put RB's and WR's in motion.
