Thumbs up NCAA 2010 should focus more on the defense...

like how they have breakaway controls and stuff for the offensive guys they should give the defensive guys something special too....i'm not sure what, but i think defensive gameplay should be a big part of NCAA 2010

I just don't want my linebackers to feel like they are in quicksand anymore.

^^^agreed. I want the different positions to feel right, as far as speed goes. Some linebackers in this game feel like they could be outrun by defensive linemen.

They just need to get rid of this "Wide open offense" they are making a big deal about. I would love to see a defensive game but at the same time if you think about it teams score a lot of points these days so its not horribly off.

Re: NCAA 2010 should focus more on the defense...

The issue it seems to me is not that they need to focus on defense in general. They need to have teams that have good defenses and other teams that are mid road and others that are just bad. One of the biggest things about EA's football games is that they have tended to develop based on some generality and hence all of the teams you play feel the same, just different uniforms. That's just one big thing they need to correct. Ratings are a huge part of it, but I think it can be rectified by developing animations for skill position ratings. Those do not stick out at all.

Things like the Oline progression Model is very simplistic. It's based on pancakes. I do not like this system. I think the Oline progression model should take more variables into account in determining if an Oline man progresses. I'd do like this.

Total Number of plays: example - 63
Pull Plays: 5/7
QB Hurries Allowed: 3
Sacks Allowed: 1
2nd Level Blocking: 4/7

OVR Rating = 82

Progress/Regress based on in game analysis:

Total Number of plays was 63 and this linemen did not take a break on a down thus he played every offensive snap.

On plays that called for him to pull, he found 5 defenders to block.
He allowed 3 QB Hurries so that is going to affect his rating negatively
He also allowed 1 sack again another negative hit.
He got to the 2nd level 7 times but only delivered four blocks again his rating is going to take a hit.

Based on game analysis his OVR rating drops by 2 points, so instead of an OVR of 82 he has regressed to an 80. This should happen every game. It is a rough sketch and I haven't worked out all the logistics but to me it's a much better system than pancakes. Just about anyone can pancake in real life but that doesn't mean they are good and it doesn't mean they are progressing. I'd like a system that takes the lineman's complete game into account, not just a pancake block that even the 3rd stringer can perform if in the right context.

Re: NCAA 2010 should focus more on the defense...

No dissrespect to anyone here, but I don't like this post because of the possible implications it could have for 2010. Here are a couple of points to think about.

1. Fixing the OL/DL interaction will greatly fix the defense
2. Wide open gameplay is college football... it's not the NFL!
3. NCAA FOOTBALL 08~ WORST NCAA GAME EVER!!!!!!
4. Proper sliders should be able to balance the game out
5. New sliders for speed, fumbles, int's, would help

My fear is that we will see a defense fest like 2008. That game was terrible. The non stop int's and fumbles made for a terrible game and the offense was so inept. I will take more offense 10 out of 10 times. Look at Madden and the brutal run game or the high frequency of int's... is that what we want to see again?

Here is a "simple" fix:
Tone down the cpu completion percentage
Tune up the cpu run abilites and frequency
Create speed sliders, int sliders, and fumble sliders
Fix OL/DL interaction

The developers should take a look at how they do sliders in CH2k8.. and do something similar only with football obviously.

Agreed 100%. When you say focus on the defense, that likely translates into more interceptions, fumbles, and an even further shutdown of the running game between the tackles.

What EA does not do is focus on the fundamentals. This means offensively and defensively. The problem is that fundamentals matter more on the defensive side of the ball because pure athleticism is often enough to succeed offensively (thus why speed breaks this game).

2010 - Focus on the fundamentals of football.

The basics mean the following:

- defenders taking decent pursuit angles and not running in straight lines all of the time
- logical offensive line blocking assignments
- line stunts
- QB's who know how to execute a screen pass
- weakside defensive protection on all plays
- receivers using size to position themselves
- cornerbacks using their hands at the line to disrupt routes
- QB's who tuck the ball and run instead of staying in the upright position

In these and a ton of other areas that are fundamentally taught to all football players, this game simply fails to deliver.

Until the fundamentals are fixed, raw athleticism will continue to be the only skill that matters.
