EVERY well-designed defense has a force, a spill, an alley and a cut back player along with defenders responsible for specific gaps for defending the run game. And EVERY defense also has contain rushers, inside rushers and designated pass defenders, whether they are zone or man-to-man.

Rather than having tier-based play calling, you should just be able to create your own defenses, thus allowing you the freedom to do what you want, but also giving you the time required to actually have a sound defense.
