If you run the zone read, you have to have a quarterback with wheels so you can outrun the d-linemen. The read end usually commits to the running back but since they slowed the play down to make the read easier this year, the line usually can't hold long enough or the backside end has enough time to come from behind and make a play. So if you don't have a fast QB, the backside end or an interior linemen that gets penetration will get you EVERY play.
Same thing happens with counter out of the gun, you get the defense flowing one way but the play takes so long by the time the he cuts back the defense has read it and they blow it up in the backfield. So the running game isn't necessarily broken, it's just difficult to be effective with on AA or Heisman.
