Online Play someone help

So i go to play online for the first time last night against a friend and guess what i can't. I already registered the online access i didnt get an error message or anything like that. My friend invited me and all i could do was scroll through the teams. so i invite him and i cant scroll through any team but now all he can do is scroll through teams. What is goin on?

Me and my friend had the same problem last night. We could play other people but not each other. We would always disconnect after about 30 seconds, usually right before/after the coin toss. Any help on this would be appreciated.
