What does it mean? I take it that it has something to do with the defensive coaching options

Yeah basically, pre-snap you have the option to have your defense key on something. You can pick Play the Pass, Run Middle, Run Left or Run Right. It makes your defense anticipate in that direction to be in a better position to make a play. Ie, it's 3rd and 17-- they're more than likely going to pass it, so you select Play the Pass (on the 360, hold down the left trigger, then move the RS up), and you'll get skill points for deflecting a pass, getting a sack or getting an Interception; however it could make you more prone to a run play.

Make sense?

I think it makes them less susceptible to play action.

How do you do this on the PS3? L1, then up (pass), down (run), left (run left), or right (run right)?

I don't have a PS3-- but I would imagine it's got to be L2, not L1 (similar to the 360 Left Trigger), and the directional should be the same as 360. Try it out.
