I got an invite to the Big Ten playing as Buffalo after just two years (8-4, 11-1). Conversely, I played through about 15 seasons with Rice, reached the National Championship twice but never got an invite to the Big 12 or SEC.
Geography plays a factor, but so does the prestige of the worst teams in conferences that are in that general area. For example, I didn't get an invite to the SEC playing as Tulane until Vanderbilt went 2-10 one year (ironic, since Tulane was once a member of the SEC, but were kicked out for being so bad in football back in the late 50s and early 60s).
