Where in the op did it say the pictures would be taken without the subject's consent? It could be done, and legally at that. I guarantee there are plenty of people, students especially, who would be happy to have their face in the game, even for no compensation.

yea at the point ea showed up on campus to take pictures, i would first, sign the consent, then second, have my picture taken

Why not use the faces of the incoming freshmen? You still dont have to put a name and it can be numbers just like it is now.....
