wr/db battles for jump balls

I've played 3 or 4 demo games, and every time I've been involved in a "jump ball" situation (whether on OFF or DEF) my guy fails to jump. I'm using L2 to get in position and square up to the ball and the 'triangle' button to jump. It's just simply not working. Anyone else having this issue? How can I adjust?

Make sure u turn auto strafe off, cuz if it's on, the game will do what it wants no matter ur button input.

Is this true? If so, I never knew that. Always wondered why it seemed like my players wouldn't respond sometimes.
