So I picked the game up last night and went right into RTG as an Iron Man athlete, playing as a power back and a balanced MLB. This was my usual setup on NCAA 12 so I knew I could get a good comparison.
First thing I've noticed is that the run blocking is pretty bad so far. I'll have a toss play to the outside with a fullback and guard pulling out with me and both just completely run by a linebacker without even attempting a block thus I get tackled for a loss. It would be okay if this was a rare deal as I would chalk it up to being lack of experience however it seems to be happening a lot on toss plays. Even going up the middle, there are occasions where the FB would go for a safety in the second level instead of a linebacker who is coming through the gap. Not cool.
I do like that it's a bit tougher to get yards. I'm finding my numbers are more realistic than NCAA 12. I'm no longer averaging 22 yards per rush with 325 yards a game and 3-5 TDs a game. I've only played 3 games so far and my best has been 6.1 yards per rush, 187 yards and 2 TDs.
I am also loving the play calling is tailored to your position as well although I can see how it might be a bit unrealistic. I'll have to wait until I make it to a College to see if it becomes more balanced but for now I'd say 90% of the plays are run plays.
As for the Defensive side of RTG. As I said, I played MLB and I gotta say, I'm still disappointed with the scoring system on defense. I had a game where I had 9 tackles, 2 for a loss and I only got 80 points. That just doesn't seem right. It's way low in my opinion. I'm still not sure how they're calculating the score but I do have some suggestions to improve it. 1.) Give points for making the QB rush his throw. I know they keep track of those stats in the game so why not apply that RTG scoring. 2.) Give points for swatted passes. 3.) Give points for obeying your field assignments. If I'm supposed to be in zone in the middle of the field and I stay in that zone for the most part, I feel like I should be awarded points for doing my job.
I've also found tackling to be a bit unrealistic in that my player is a 242lb guy and when I go to tackle a 175lb receiver who is coming over the middle and he knocks me on my *** and keeps on going I find that hard to believe. It has happened several times in fact which bugs me big time.
Regardless, I think defense is a bit easier to play this year which is cool with me because I've never been a big advocate for the defensive side of RTG.
I think the changes made to RTG are definitely all positive and has given me a renewed interest in playing it. I think with some tweaks to the sliders, I can really tune this mode to be awesome. Just my 2 cents
