In season progression/ hidden potentional rating?

For a while now NCAA has had guys gaining +1 in certain skills or to their overall. What is this based on?

I know its not based on productivity, as when I first got the game I was throwing picks left and right as I was getting used to the passing system again after not playing any EA football games for months.

With all the picks (4 in the first 2 games) my QB Jake Medlock still gained a +1 in awareness by week 3, and another few upgrades in awareness etc even with less than stellar play over the course of the season.

On the other hand my TE Ya'keem Griner stated the season as a 71 and ended as a 71 after a 1034 yard 7 td season. Is there a hidden potential rating or something for certain players? How is it decided who gets skill upgrades over the course of the season?
